Guest2553 posted:While we're there we can liberate Syria as well Not a hope in hell of that happening. This is kinda crappy for the folks on Regina. They're being taken away from a mission with a clear purpose (and timeline) and being given one that basically amounts to being somewhere for the sake of being there without anything to actually do. This was what it was like for us on Vancouver after the Libya mission ended and the government wanted to keep a ship there because no one knew where the whole Arab Spring thing was going (Syria was happening already back then). It was very frustrating to be kept from going home for no clear purpose - at least we were able to chop into OP Active Endeavour and pick up the east coaster freebie medal.

Pretty amazing to see almost everyone posted to Ottawa turn out for the Afghanistan memorial today. I never thought I'd see a Leopard, a Chinook and a LAV Company on Parliament Hill.

The CO of 2 RCHA was killed yesterday in a LAV III rollover on Ex Maple Resolve in Wainwright. 4 others where injured as well. http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/decorated-soldier-dies-in-training-accident-at-cfb-wainwright-1.1832468

That must be pretty rough for everyone on that exercise. On one hand, it ended early, on the other, someone died. Edit: Not to mention the CO's driver is probably pretty bummed because he's losing a cushy as gently caress job. Ultimate Shrek Fan fucked around with this message at 07:11 on May 22, 2014 |

Serious question because I've never been in one: I'm guessing the weight of the vehicle makes a roll cage over the crew hatch impractical, and an emergency "get the gently caress back in here" seat would probably just rip the crew commander's arms off? Is there no way to protect the occupant aside from depending on his situational awareness* to get back into the vehicle before it lands on him? (*Which isn't to imply someone hurt or killed in a rollover was being inattentive, of course)

From the news it sounds like they were down for a day, but resumed. As to roll cage? I think it's highly unlikely that you'd be able to rig something on top of the turret that could withstand the full weight of the vehicle on top of it, while still being able to see out. They're top heavy bastards already, and that would just exacerbate it. For CCs you're usually supposed to keep everything below the hatch that you possibly can - the usual phrase is 'name tape defilade,' i.e. keep everything below your name tape inside the turret. Granted, you may have to hop up a little bit if you're short, or want to glass things with binoculars. Or you're just riding in the cargo bin behind the turret because safety staff on a mech range live life on the edge I don't know the details, but I'd wager a guess that the accident happened in the PDA. That place is just hilly as gently caress, with knife edge ridges all over the goddamned place. I've never felt closer to imminent demise than crew commanding a LAV out there. Also, and I know this can't be said enough, gently caress Wainwright.

Dumb hopeful question: Does anyone know what the infantry hiring situation is like right now? I swear that both the CF site and the recruiters I talked to a week ago said that it was hiring (and had the most openings), but I checked again today and it's not. And pilot is now somehow hiring and in demand. This is the complete opposite of what I was expecting, really.

The recruiting numbers for most trades are supposed to reset in April. I suppose it's possible that Infantry has already filled its SIP but in less than two months.... I'm not so sure. e: I have it on very good authority that INFMN is not closed. flakeloaf fucked around with this message at 16:07 on May 26, 2014 |

Keep in mind thing are pretty grim all around. Not much money in the budget for regular postings. And you do not want to join combat arms in peacetime, it'll be a miserable cockfest.

If you're talking INFMN, then last I checked there was still plenty of intake. If you're going the officer route, INF is pretty much restricted to ROTP. Pilot had a lot of space left as well. I can get you more firm numbers when I move into my new job on the 16th as an MCC (military career counsellor) at a recruiting centre. In VANCOUVER. But yeah, as others have said, you may want to look more closely at the specialist occupations, as you'll end up with a trade/qualification at the end of your tenure, plus you're always doing poo poo, whereas the combat arms is kind of an easy target for cuts in time of peace.

So how long are we looking at for component transfers? Better to stick with the trade you have than to have none at all?
|
# ? May 26, 2014 21:03 |

I know a lot of occupational transfers have gone through recently, but I think that's a whole other kettle of fish from component transfers. The few people I've run into recently with CTs in had been waiting a fair while. Then again, they were trying to go reg force iNF, so

2Lts/new Lts in the wilds of Bn paw plaintively at the doors to the rifle platoon offices, waiting for any sign of sickness or weakness from the current pl comds. Then, once they have achieved the lofty status of pl comd, proceed to realize that most of the job is lovely, tedious paperwork, and having good ideas poo poo all over you from above. Ptes/Cpls? Well, the Chive isn't going to read itself, damnit.

Technically an aide to the CO, does a lot of the lovely paperwork for the CO, etc.
