Shuttle weekend is still a horrible event, but looks like there's a new gimmick to it... shuttle versions of 20-man fleet alert, No-Win Scenario, and Storming the Spire that give double the usual marks. Could be a fun change of pace anyway.

Is there such a thing as 'good' shuttle equipment? Or should I just outfit it as if it were an escort?

For that matter, are there 'good' shuttles? I've only got the Yellowstone they gave out for free last year.

The hands down best shuttles are the peregrine, to'duj, and scorpion fighters since they get CRF1 as an innate ability and generally have the highest maneuverability in the class. Nothing's really quite as close. After that... the Aeon's pretty good (sensor analysis), and shuttles with two bridge officer seats are handy, but everything else just kind of blends together.

Beyond that... yeah, basically just outfit them like an escort. Dual beam banks are a good option, especially on shuttles that can't use dual cannons. FAW is an ensign level skill and pretty much wrecks most things with DBBs, and I thiiink the tetryon cascade rep power doesn't scale down when you're in a shuttle, though Cryptic fixed the point defense console a while ago. Really though, there's not a whole lot of point in twinking out a shuttle; there's only so much you can do with them equipment wise, and so little content to use them in. Just for gods sake never use the shuttle-specific gear.

Oh yeah, the Precise trait would probably be pretty handy too.

I try my hardest not to experience third party ERP, but as I see it the whole reason these people are pissed is because they can't RP about lemonade giving them heartburn in Quarks for hours without something making their avatar dance (in a bar, no less)? And they're not willing to keep their ERP to ship bridges?

I guess it's more fun to equate it to rape, huh.

Especially hilarious considering that they can't find RP reasons to go to a private place, but they also can not find reasons to dance. In a bar. With a disco ball above their head.

I'm not even a roleplayer but wouldn't something along the lines of "Why don't we go someplace more private and continue our discussion?" serve that purpose? I mean I can see having bad rp sex on THE BRIDGE OF A STARSHIP to be a bit problematic, but maybe they're forgetting there are lower decks? gently caress in engineering, I mean REALLY.

A lot of these RPer's aren't captains of their own ships. They're merely slaves or residents who contract transportation services in exchange for uh, favors. Because doing this in an online cube-shooting game is totally a legitimate thing that is in no way weird at all and if you make fun of it you're going to be Godwin Law'd out of ESD.

I petered out on STO just before the whole Perfect World acquisition. Just spotted this thread, tried logging in, and apparently I have to link my old account to a new Arc/PWE account, and it has to be done manually by support staff? Currently going through this whole rigmarole: https://support.arcgames.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4362

When I last logged in DOffs were a new thing and I was a Rear Admiral. Will probably start fresh from scratch this time around with a new character. What can I expect?

What about the Blue Shuttle Phasers from the Vault on a Yellowstone? Since they are have a 360 arc. Or would a normal turret be better? Also I use the Fart Shuttle Engine because I like to push buttons.

Most shuttles are so maneuverable that you don't really need the 360' beams. Typically a pair of what would be 'trash' DBB are better than the Type-S beams. Also, fire at will with a DBB is pretty good on a shuttle.

Most of the shuttle content is balanced around having pretty low end weapons so when you throw your reputation set on a shuttle you really tear poo poo up. The new equipment management thing that lets you easily share items between your ships means there's really no excuse. Sticking high-end engines and dual cannons in the a Peregrin or a To'Duj makes you feel like you are playing a Rogue Squadron knockoff.

Edit: oh, 20man shuttle Storming the Spire. That Voth dreadnought at the end will never know what hit it. (No, it will literally not be able to feel the gentle ticking of 20 shuttles)

Edit2: vvvv Apart from the 360' AP beam thing.

Just go with an AP beam array and the AP 360 beam from sphere of influence if you want wide firring arcs on your shuttle.

Roll a romulan tac if you're makng a new character. The Romulan eps are really good and a rom tac is the best race/class combo. If you really want a fed or klank that's fine as well. They've both had an overhaul of their episodes as well so there's fun to be had there as well. As for what to expect once you're done leveling: STO is a decent f2p MMO that really doesn't gently caress you over for not having a sub at all.

The space combat is still the main draw since the ground is just generic MMO with phasers. They've got some fun ground content now at least even if the mechanics are nothing special.

So were were just testing the 20 person shuttle fleet alert - gives out all marks of choice, 173 with first day bonus, 118 without.

Still the same enemies you'd encounter at the normal fleet alert, this is kinda lazy.

Well, you don't have to do it through support; the first time you go to log-in through your PWE/Arc account in STO it'll prompt you asking if you had an old account and if you want to link it. Unless you accidentally hit no like I did you totally have to do it through support though. :downs:

As I just came back a few weeks ago myself you can expect it to break down like this: Romulan content is really well done and the ships are fun. Klingons had like a dozen of so so to okay missions added so that they finally have enough content. The Federation, on the other hand, because it had the most content complete is still kind of bad but not as much as theyve revamped a few missions. But a lot of "kill 300 cardassians" episodes are kind of around.

If youre starting a new character it takes about a week to hit 50 just doing episodes and you'll hit 50 well before you run out of episodes.

Best bit:

quote:

To staff your summer starships, you’ll want new crew, and the Risians have offered up some of their own Duty Officers for recruitment. To earn the loyalty of the Risians, you must learn their ways, so you’ll have to complete some of the activities on the island and see some of the sights before you can requisition them, and the best duty officers will require the most commitment. Risian duty officers include Helm Officers, Geologists, and Entertainers with all-new, unique active roster abilities like Risian Drift, Tectonics Expert, and Emergency Power to Party!

I need to go see if the forums have burst into flame yet.

Edit: one to watch: clicky

I saw someone today running I think was the risian corvette judging by their speed. But I'm not sure. Was doing high speed plasma clouds and ejecting web mines. However, instead of the default 5 mine shape, they were dropping over formations, so there is that as well.

It was cute and probably worked better than me in my arkif since I only noticed during the voth show down at the end of the undine battlezone.
