4% closer to the v1.0 criteria of 100 "major" features completed, anyway.

It's no DF2014, but Meph at least released 5.0 Masterwork. Succubi!

Ironically, I remember the main sign of a major DF release being that you won't be able to even get to Toady's website. It was down for a long time in 2010.

No that's worse. Instead of a Catholic Mythology-derived metaphor for the male atavistic fear of sex, speaking to the psychological intersection between sexual temptation and moral damnation, they're just semipornographic sex objects that serve as a supposedly-acceptable way to objectify women (because they're soulless, you see, so it's OK). Note: I don't know anything about Lost Girl.

The bug faction that Meph is thinking of seems pretty interesting, what with the grass the insects eat as a larva affecting their final form.

Yeah, I give him credit for that. In my conceited mind I never could've expected that grazers could get syndromes from ingesting special grasses.

Does Masterwork or DFhack do something with military behavior regarding retreating? I've noticed a few times now a military dwarf has taken a pretty bad injury and then ran away back to safety. I kind of like it but I don't remember that in vanilla.

The exact criteria that cause that are still a mystery.

Dwarf Fortress 2014 - The Reason for Retreating is Still a Mystery More relevant: I come back to the game pretty regularly, but I've kinda fell out of actually doing the fortress part. Instead I usually make adventurers until one kills all the quest targets within a reasonably large area, feel I'm at the best I'll ever be, and only then go into fortress mode. In order to dig a hole straight into hell. Then I bring that adventurer out of retirement and fight the forces of hell for as long as they will survive it. Then I do it all over again a while later.

Masterwork problem; I've got a steam engine which is obviously working, but I can't seem to actually use the power. I have two gear assemblies and a horizontal axle attached to the top left and right corners, where the power's supposed to come out, but all of them are showing inactive and unpowered. Most perplexing. I'm trying to learn about minecarts, but it's proving difficult because I can't power the rollers. The engine in question is low-left; got a diamond gear assembly going north from it to the roller, a steel assembly just attached to the right corner, and an axle going north from the right corner. None of them are powered, though the engine is working.

Well, some programmers might be stuck in the bug fixing phase forever, but Toady's "good enough for release" is pretty permissive.

It's been 2 years since the last release. It's legitimately more likely at this point that Toady will mysteriously drop dead from a heart attack than it is that he'll release it in the next month.

Eh, it was 11 months from the last release when the first iteration of the current version came out. Just about a two year gap between 0.28.181.40d and 0.31.01 too.
