Thanks for the info, I'm probably going to end up talking with a recruiter again soon so I'll just ask about what's actually open then, I was just hoping that there was a reliable way to check this sort of thing without needing to call/drive to a centre.

And I know combat arms is probably a bad idea for a number of reasons, but their propaganda videos are the best :canada:

The feeling seems to go away when you get a job with enough seniority but not too many pressing responsibilities. Typically a Major position from what I've seen (OpsO, STRO, something like that), but that still doesn't mean you let your guys go. You just disappear on the reg.

I don't think all Combat Arms jobs are that boring though. I spent a fair bit of time as a field troop, which is the typical phonefest with nothing to do in garrison and we spent a lot of time sweeping parking lots, but at least for us once you specialize within the trade you're normally pretty busy. EOD guys get to gently caress around with robots and run scenarios, armoured engineers work non-stop on their tanks, us heavy equipment guys jury rig our ancient kit to keep it going and divers comb their hair and play grab rear end or something. I know personally I've been busy as hell this year, I've spent maybe 2 weeks out of the last year not on course, in the field or on leave.

Oh and sweeping parking lots is just about the stupidest loving thing ever. gently caress that who cares it's a loving parking lot it's outgoddamnside and poo poo outside gets dirty. Every Friday there's 50 - 60 dudes sweeping the parking lots at the unit in the summer.

Counterpoint to all that: summer hours and sports. Combat arms is 75% cock and 25% fun I'd say.

Navy-wise I've never seen parking lot sweeping (they're all 105% full during working hours anyway). Spending 2 hrs pretending to clean the same 6 x 10 hunk of space on a ship though... guess we just do the same on a smaller scale.

Delayed response, but thank you. And actually I think I might have gotten than response from one of the junior officers.

So has anyone else here ever stayed in the shacks at Connaught? I just finished BMQ there and, uh, I think they got re-condemned after the fire alarm tripped by accident in the middle of the night. We all thought it was a drill until we realized the girls' hadn't come out of their shacks, and then our NCO came out and was just as pissed as we were.

I've been there, number of years ago early when I had joined and doing a Class B over the summer, went there to put up the tents and poo poo like that for CIVSAC (I think? Shooting competition at Connaught). We didn't stay there long before getting booted out for one of the tents so that the shooting teams could have the rooms, probably for the best. Personally I only slept in the room once or twice, I just went home at the end of the day and came back in the morning.

I think they condemn those barracks every few years, before opening up again. You're lucky though, that time was also back when there was a massive sewage problem so you couldn't use the toilets, they had blue rockets everywhere..hundreds of them baking in the blazing hot sun.

I'm STILL pissed that when everyone else got to play around with some of the British weapons at the range on the last day, I and a few others had to tally the last batch of scores. They should've put us at the front of the line to squeeze some rounds off before going to do that.

Is this still hanging framed in the mess? :

The Ottawa Sun posted:

MANY OF THE 300 veterans who travelled by train from Halifax to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies in Ottawa laid their weary heads down in abandoned housing on a desolate military base last night.

The veterans, who are all over 80, were shocked to find out that the cash they shelled out for the trip down memory lane would not cover hotel rooms. Instead, they were taken to drafty, abandoned military housing at Connaught Ranges, a training centre soldiers only visit during the day for target practice.

Cliff Chadderton, head of the National Council of Veterans Associations, said he began receiving calls from friends on the train tour after they were bused to the sprawling training centre in Ottawa's west end near Shirley's Bay and told they would have to pay as much as $10 a night for the accommodations.

Something's not right here. Not that the veterans were staying in barracks. That was understood as early as September, as per this issue of Legion Magazine:

Most veterans of World War II have memories of travelling to departure points by train. Via Rail hopes to bring home those memories in the Year of the Veteran by creating a Remembrance Day Train which will make a return trip from Halifax to Ottawa for the national Remembrance Day ceremony.

Ron Jackson, a ticket agent in Halifax, said the idea was developed in February when a group of Via employees met to discuss what they could do for the community in 2005. "We spoke to a number of veterans and Legionnaires. They all have fond memories of the trains," said Jackson. He says the group takes pride in that the event is organized by unionized employees not the Montreal head office.

In Ottawa, veterans will be able to stay at the Connaught Range Barracks for $3.00 a night or in a downtown Ottawa hotel for $99. A tour of the new Canadian War Museum is being arranged.

Costs for a senior range from $285.20 including tax for a coach seat to $671.60 for a bedroom.

You might be pleased to know they've renovated the bathrooms... kind of. The good news for us was that the toilets were all relatively new and functional, and the showers at least didn't make you dirtier when you walked into them. The bad news about the toilets was that the plumbing was hosed, and often water would leak from the base of the units. Seriously, this place was never 100% clean no matter how hard we tried. Between the dust, the lovely toilets, and the incredible 2-week-long-downpour we had late April/early May it made for a helluva BMQ.

Hizawk posted:

I'm telling you man, it was that faulty fire alarm that did it. Toilets leak? Deal with it. Door frame is broken? Fix it. Fire alarm busted? Set up a fire picket! Fire alarm busts multiple times in the same night? Spend the night on the floor of the platoon classroom! Actually no joke that was probably the best night's sleep a lot of us had the whole course.
