Haven't listened to an Ask That Guy in ages, but from what I remember they're pretty much just "how horrible can we get" Aristocrats-style humor, pretty effective. I don't think Tropers get that, though. Just another wacky TGWTG character!!! And Grimdark too!!!

I can honestly say I don't understand the popularity of TGWTG. He's just...bland, I suppose. What's his pizazz? Where's his appeal? Why do Tropers insist upon writing an entire alternate fanfiction universe which involves the entire cast of an internet vlogger site all becoming prostitutes?

I can understand enjoying someone like Linkara or Sage, because while they can get annoying with their schtick, at least they know what they are talking about, and they can convey it in an interesting manner. But Nostalgia Critic? What insightful stuff does he ever say that isn't bogged down in awful skits and failed actors from his disastrous pet project?

For that particular "character" it was either "dark/edgy" is funny or it was complete off the wall random poo poo. For gently caress's sake "Hamster Jelly" was somthing that was said, mostly to sell as a card in the short lived CCG type thing that TGWTG had for a while years and years back.

Daffy Duck acting plus he talks about things from people's childhood. Internet nerds do not have their standards any higher than mainstream audiences. (See: anything on TV, the radio, movies- lots of bland and dull poo poo.) As for weird fanfic... There's kind of a weird thing in fanfic circles where you just try to take the characters in whatever you're into and put them into a totally different situation. Normally, this manifests in eighty jillion "the cast of Firefly but they're in high school!!!" fics, but a few people really like writing about their favorite characters suffering horribly and/or in weird sexual situations. Internet fandom in general just has a weird predilection toward writing fanfic for everything, even stuff that doesn't actually have any kind of narrative. I don't really get it, but that's how it is.

The thing I never understood about AU fanfiction is that if you remove these characters from their original setting and appearance, sometimes going so far as to change their personality, why not just, you know, write something original? "Original", I should say, but still.

Because if you have to start fresh, no one is going to already care about your characters, you're going to have to like, ugh, work at making the characters automatically appealing to others in order to get them to read. Better to do a bait-and-switch so they come in expecting a familiar character and maybe they won't notice your totally irrelevant original character!!!!???!?!?

So I've been marathoning through this thread off and on for the past week or so. Here's something at least. quote:Child Espionage RP Discussion There was a link to the thing itself in there, so let's see how bad this is. Here's the opening post: quote:Among the many planes dotting the sky at this moment, jetting their passengers to their destinations, there were four, first-class and luxurious ones heading to a remote island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Hailing from heavily-defended army bases in Nevada, Virginia, Norfolk, England and a remote place in Wales, these planes were shuttling a new generation. quote:Sophia frowned ever so slightly and pursed her lips at Daniel's non-reaction. Gay? Asexual? She filed these possibilities away for future consideration but, since she wasn't actually interested in him her ego was not bruised. She extended her hand towards him. "Pleased to meet you, " she said with just a hint of warmth in her voice. If he took it her handshake would be firm and assured but without the macho strength testing guys so often indulged in. This seems like it can go terrible places very fast, but I have to get to work. Here's the link to this thing if anyone wants to have a look while I'm gone.

Okay, so I finally finished the thread, and holy poo poo. It's just all the way through. I come across people here and there that used TVT as kind of a wiki, but were ignorant about the forums, but they did always remark how insane many of the entries were. Thing that struck me is all of their character outlines always read like an RPG character sheet. I'm surprised they don't list the Strength and Charisma of Owario the teenage veteran of a thousand battles. As is pointed out many times, these guys do not consume any media that isn't anime and video games, or if they've got a wider scope, comic books and genre TV their ideas are going to be very limited. As for Japan worship, I took a fair number of Asian Studies classes in university (before I switched my major over to modern history) and it was really depressing to see the huge gap between people that legitimately were interested in Asia, and those that were simply there because they thought they could write essays about Sailor Moon and get As. With profs being old guys who were aware of the existence of anime and manga, they didn't take too kindly to weeaboo antics. One of my essays and presentations was actually about how Japan has whitewashed its WW2 record, and there was at least one guy heckling me until the prof told him to shut the gently caress up, because Japan didn't do anything wrong and we should be the ones apologizing to them for using Atomic weapons on them. Big mean western world picking on Glorious Nippon! (Another essay I wrote for the same class was about how Japanese militarism was actually a reaction to western colonization in Asia). A good friend of mine has been teaching English in japan for a long time, up to a point where he's the senior teaching at the school, and part of that is hiring new teachers and such. MOst of the applicants he gets are from England or Australia, but there's an decent number of Americans and Canadians. Those they really screen because they want to avoid getting the guys who think "I'll go to Japan and live the Otaku life because that's what people do in Japan!" rather than people that legitimately want to teach English and have an experience. His stories about Japan actually make it sound insane, which he will freely admit. Insanely hectic and squished, everyone is extremely polite to the point of it actually being rude. While manga and anime is everywhere, its mostly seen as kids stuff or for weirdos. He had no idea what Attack On Titan was until I explained it to him at Anime North and he said "Oh okay! I see that skinless guy everywhere, I had no idea that was it" because you still have to go and watch it, its not like its on tv screens on the subway. From what I have heard from him and other people who have gone to Japan for various reasons, if you literally go to be a professional Otaku in Japan, you will be seen as the creepiest weirdo that ever did creep. What was that rich kid who moved to Japan for that and posted videos of his life? Those were just really sad. BTW, You cannot go to japan for longer than I think 14 days without having a business or university sponsoring you. And they are really quick to deport people.

DStecks posted:I'm sorry, are we confusing Attack on Titan with Death Note, or is there a second anime potato chip meme I'm not aware of? There is a single memorable scene in AoT where a recruit eats a potato while the drill sergeant is doing his "you are not worthy to lick the dirt from my boots" spiel. It has become a meme, to the point where a later chapter of the manga explicitly references the scene.
