It's pretty awesome though I must say.
Vai had this done to one of his swirly-colored 7-String Universe Ibanezes for his "For The Love of God" video (I hate that song).

He had someone use small amounts of lighter fluid (no blowtorches, as far as I know) on a new guitar to make a "tribute" to the Strat that Hendrix burned at Monterey. They even took the melted pickup bobbins and rewound them to make new pickups out of them.

Here's Jimi (sorry for the watermark, it was a quick GIS):

...and here it is burning at the end of the show:

...and here's what Ibanez came up with for the video:

Yup, it's been done. I never liked the swirl paint jobs, but I'd have this one (I know, coming from me that's not saying much.)
Just thought you might like to see. I think both guitars suit the thread pretty well.

You know what, I'll accept that, the guitar has enough pointy-ness and weirdness to be able to have DiMarzio's (I'm assuming Super Distortions though, anything too much hotter would be stupid)

I think that the cult of imitating Hendrix is stupid, I mean, he's cool when you start out and your only goal is 'be as cool as Hendrix' but when you realize that it's a fool's errand you develop your own style and move on. Pretty much anybody who goes, "I'm gonna be Hendrix" after they've played for a few years is too dumb to realize that to be Hendrix you've gotta create your own style and mix so many genres that it's hard to tell where one influence begins and end. Otherwise you're just a guy who sits around chasing vapor trails by playing boring licks for the hundred thousandth time.

With that rant over, I still hate swirly paint jobs, Vai, and JEMs (barring the floral one) but that thing kinda makes it's own cool vibe. Less 'aggressive Star Trek' that most Ibanez's have and more of a 'Sci-fi undead Rasputin' where it looks like something that refuses to die unless it's on it's own terms.

honestly being into steve vai/satriani/dragonforce etc. is totally okay when you're 14/15 because thats when a lot of people get into playing instruments or at least taking it seriously, and those guys seem like the logical endpoint of playing guitar. the problem is when people don't start to appreciate something other than technical wanking as they get older and just want to emulate that kind of garbage.

i really feel like most people, if they went through any sort of real classes and didn't learn an instrument because your friends wanted to start a band and no one played drums or whatever, went through an embarrassing phase of obsessing over "virtuoso" musicians

I unironically enjoyed many of the songs on that CD (because I was just 16-17 myself), I just never liked that one song. It was, to me, the Vai equivalent of Rubina's Song or whatever that was called.

He was just getting his solo voice back then, after playing with Zappa and David Lee Roth and Whitesnake (Whitesnake dudes introducing songs, lol).
Alien Love Secrets is where I felt he really found his inspiration and ran with it. It's hit-or-miss because it's Vai after all, but there's a lot more innovation because I think he saw his genre dying and decided to branch out and try to stretch.

When I want to hear a virtuoso on guitar now, I look to Tommy Emmanuel or Robin Ford, or YouTube videos of crazy people I don't know anything about like that guy Guthrie Govan who is just amazing.

I never read that. I know Vandenberg is credited with writing the songs, but I was always suspicious about his injury. I figured Coverdale just wanted Vai for some reason. He did give Vai carte blanche to arrange the tunes any way he wanted, and he obviously put a ton of effort into it. He basically filled every song with little licks and they're all different.
And I recall he played in PiL, Zappa's band, and was in David Lee Roth's band for two really incredibly great albums before Whitesnake.

His early solo stuff I thought was a little weak overall, but I also feel like he's been improving ever since Fire Garden.

I don't know how long he toured with Whitesnake, though.

When I'm in the mood for Whitesnake I really only reach for the John Sykes self-titled one that came out before. It's incredibly fun driving music (and it takes me back to High School).

Sorry for the derail.

Vai was also working as a sideman at that point (jumped from Zappa to DLR to Whitesnake) so he was pretty much on as a hired gun, not to promote his solo stuff (dude's got bills to pay)

Gonna out myself with some basic Vai knowledge (I read a lot of guitar magazines when I was a teenager leave me alone): his first album was Flex-Able which is maybe the most interesting stuff he ever did (post-Zappa, pre-Roth) and then he played on the worst Public Image Limited album and followed it up with becoming Steve Vai Guitar Sensualist

My problem with wanking like this is that music is just as much about the parts where you're not playing. Pauses define the rhythm and feel of your music. Guys like this just play fastfastfast and their music doesn't have a sound, it's just a bunch of notes that don't sound horrible next to each other flying at you. Here's some good speed + rhythm:

It reminds me of Shawn Lane, the dude could shred it right the gently caress up (and no one will ever play as fast and clean as he did) but his own music... ehhhhh... I can't stomach it, it's really corny softcore porn/PBS type stuff. Time is the Enemy is pretty good though.

i don't think you gotta have space in music for it to be beautiful or convey a story but you just have to know how to separate the voicings. playing fast doesn't mean jack if you can't lay down a theme and give the notes some meaning. our boy joe pass knows what's up when it comes to always playing always:
