Then again, this is all you really need to know about the Canadian media landscape. The Globe has endorsed Harper's Conservatives in every election since 2006 (and probably the ones before that too, there just aren't Wikipedia pages about them). That being said, that G&M article was the first I've heard of this: quote:And as the election moved into its final days, Leader Andrea Horwath was bizarrely attempting to mischaracterize Ms. Wynne’s proposal for a province-wide pension plan, an idea the NDP once supported and sort of still does, as being part of a right-wing, “Harper-style” agenda. The NDP’s moves have been strange and sad. gently caress off, Andrea Horwath, seriously. What the gently caress.

I've been at work ten minutes and have now heard three separate attack ads over the radio - one from each major party. Cannot wait until Thursday night. My fearless prediction is that, numbers-wise, we somehow end up with the exact same Legislature as we did before the election was called. I don't know if it's been linked yet but the national post's endorsement of the PCs is comical in it's lack of argument and comic book villain like conservativism. It doesn't even mention the NDP and pretends they don't even exist, while explicitly advocating austerity, "common sense" (obvious reference to mike harris), and calls aboriginal protesters "thugs". http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com..._medium=twitter

It is apparently true, though, that Horwath refused Wynne's suggestions to meet and discuss what should be in the budget while it was being written (before any of the leaks). Even Hudak was apparently willing to sit down in a room with Wynne and talk about what should be in the budget, even if what he actually said was probably "Fire everyone and appoint me Premier, and then maybe I'll vote for it". This implies that Horwath had decided to shoot down the budget literally no matter what was in it.

That's more or less the open thesis of the NDP campaign, that Liberal corruption and a failure to live up to past negotiations made a deal impossible, Horwath's big mistake was not making this more explicit months ago and leaving open a patina of a chance that she might support the budget.

Hudak had openly said that he'd be voting against the budget no matter what it contained. If Horwath had done the same, it would make more sense. Now it just seems that she voted against it because it wasn't good enough - and that's a big part of what is making progressives upset at her. I sympathize with the idea that she didn't trust the Liberals to follow through, but then why not just say so in the first place? Why make it look like you're voting against pensions in order to save people money on car insurance? It makes no sense. One can only assume that she really does want to vote against pensions in order to save people money on car insurance.

One can only assume that she really does want to vote against pensions in order to save people money on car insurance. This is the crux of the matter as I see it. If she had said ahead of time, like Hudak did, that she wouldn't vote for it no matter what because she didn't trust the Liberals or they were too corrupt or whatever, then I don't think she would alienate her base anywhere near as much as she did. Nobody gives Hudak any poo poo at all for voting against the budget, because his stance on it was very clear. Instead it appears that Horwath decided the same thing but didn't say it out loud, which means that the optics of it all are her defeating a progressive budget and risking a Hudak government just because.

I'd say her real problem was a lack of any defining issues or policies. What exactly is her vision for the province? A slightly less ambitious version of the Liberal platform with plus some incongruous and highly dubious promises about appointing a minister to stop the gravy train. The strategy seems to have been to move aggressively to the centre, to avoid any ambitious policies, and to hope that Tim Hudak's campaign would crash and burn so hard that the ONDP could slip up the middle. It was a dumb strategy and unless every poll taken so far is off (admittedly, this can't be ruled out) it looks like its a strategy that's going to backfire pretty strongly. It has put the NDP's Toronto seats at risk, it doesn't seem to have attracted many swing voters, and it may end up directly contributing to the election of the most regressive government since before the Second World War.

Or this one? Canada has an extremely conservative media. There are essentially two non-right-wing national media outlets, and they are the CBC and the Toronto Star--and the CBC already cannot take political action like openly endorsing candidates, and is steadily being eviscerated by a combination of funding cuts, conservative management (apparently 8 out of 11 CBC board members are CPC donors), and the loss of revenue-generating hockey coverage.

I guess their point is that she is none of the above? Still kinda sounds like an endorsement though.

Yesterday some black and white signs were popping up around Ottawa, I saw a few myself, that said "TIM HUDAK IS PUTTING MY JOB AT RISK" or something. They were definitely anti-Hudak but not ostensibly pro-anyone else. I saw some tweets saying they broke bylaws, but I couldn't find which bylaws they broke. The signs are apparently put up by the Working Families Coalition. I had also read that some were being taken down for some reason, so maybe they were violating bylaws, but again, I couldn't find which one. Are these signs going up anywhere else? Or is it just Ottawa?

One important note: Ipsos is the pollster that had the Tories leading for most of the campaign. So them saying it's a dead heat now may be a good thing for the Liberals. Ekos (http://www.ekospolitics.com/index.php/2014/06/weekend-update-liberals-staunch-bleeding/):
