To elaborate a bit more on Aatrek, a bunch of assholes that had been banned from SA for being assholes decided to once again pick someone they didn't like from SA and get any dirt they could about said person and then try and get in touch with their employer and family members to communicate said dirt. Then they found out that Aatrek was a registered sex offender (my memory is a bit hazy but I think it was a young girl be babysat when he was 17 or something. The police kept some details to themselves to protect the victim). They then contacted SA, among others, and he got booted from the forums. While I agree that Aatrek was a douche and had to go, the most funny part was the people pretending that the internet was the most serious of businesses in the aftermath. The ones complaining about how SA didn't catch this in their background check that they don't run before making someone the moderator of a message board. My favorite was the person calling out SA for giving Aatrek "modding powers over anyone" like he's a guard at a women's prison and had actual authority he could use to extort sexual favors or something. Oh, and FYAD invaded Aatrek's precious Star Trek thread for some reason and it had to be closed and a new one started in its place.

He diddled a kid in his youth and it came to light and he got chased off the internet. With him no longer a mod, it ceased to be a bannable offense to sass him, so now it's kind of agreed that he was a douche and a shill for TrekCore and a bad mod with a bunch of bad dumb policies. His most heinous crime being telling people they must watch every episode of Voyager.

My personal anecdote about the whole Aatrek thing was how even though he knew SA was going to find out, he was still trying to hoard Star Trek DVD extras only a few hours before he got perma-banned. I still have his PM in my inbox from that same day telling me how to rip some stupid interview from one of the DVD sets, explicitly telling me to contact him by email because he was about to lose PM Privileges. A few hours later, realized what he meant. Good thing I never actually ripped it.

Along with the photos on the computer of Scott Faichnie, also busted for possessing child porn, they found a snapshot of the pediatric nurse and Boy Scout leader wearing a dress "Federation" uniform. Another suspect had a TV remote control shaped like a phaser. Yet another had a Star Trek credit card in his wallet. One was using "Picard" as his screen name. In the 3 1/2 years since police in Canada's biggest city established a special unit to tackle child pornography, investigators have been through so many dwellings packed with sci-fi books, DVDs, toys and collectibles like Klingon swords and sashes that it's become a dark squadroom joke. "We always say there are two types of pedophiles: Star Trek and Star Wars," says Det. Ian Lamond, the unit's second-in-command. "But it's mostly Star Trek."

Man, this thread explicitly said not to watch Voyager and I did it anyway, and I still feel like I need someone to be mad at about it besides myself. What the gently caress is it that draws all the pedophiles to Star Trek, anyway? Is it the weird Neelix stuff, or the fact that Kes is supposed to be like two years old? That episode with all the children where the one that's just hitting puberty gets attracted to Kirk? Like, law enforcement has mentioned Star Trek specifically a few times and I really don't get what in the content makes it a draw for them over any other damned science fiction program.

Maybe it's the way the plots are generally uncomplicated and the characters are emotionally austere, stoic, and/or theatrically exaggerated. That kind of writing/acting could appeal to someone mentally stunted enough to be attracted to children. Either that or the episode where the tranporter de-ages Keiko and she still tries to get her frequent flyer Miles.

If I had to guess? Star Trek is family-friendly without being as obviously creepy as a grown man obsessing over Disney films. A lot of pedophiles like things which give them ins with kids, so something they can enjoy alongside a child without being "that 55-y/o who wears a Fluttershy tee" is probably a tremendous draw. Star Trek is respectable, it's something which everyone is aware of and has been part of the cultural landscape for 50 years. It's probably a fantasy escape for them as much as any other pathetic basement-dweller, too. I knew a dude growing up who was exactly the basement nerd I mean; he lived in his parents' basement until he was 55, and only moved out because they both finally died and he couldn't possibly afford the upkeep on the property. His suite had Trek models dangling from the ceiling, and when I worked the Walmart in that town, he would come in every payday to fondle the Trek DVDs. Nice guy. Creepy as poo poo. Closet pedo? Nah. Just kind of slow. I think he just had Autism, but was old enough to have escaped diagnosis beyond "that boy ain't right".

It's just weird, because you hear law enforcement talk about Star Trek specifically so often. Doctor Who is just as simplistic and theatrically exaggerated, and it's about an older gentleman asking young, teenaged girls into his telephone booth sized box, but you never see these news stories from the police talking about Doctor Who. Maybe we're just a few years away from that because of how recently the revival got popular, I don't know. I'd forgotten about that de-aged Keiko episode, Jesus Christ.

I think the lesson from Aatrek, besides the obvious "don't be a pedophile", is don't be an internet douchebag. If Aatrek could have reigned in his dictatorial impulses and just been a cool mod like most of them are, no one would have gone dumpster diving into his personal history and, in turn, he wouldn't have gotten digitally run out of town on a rail. In short, be a dick and dickish thing will be done unto you. Internet karma is a thing, post accordingly.

I can't really place TOS there, since I haven't seen all of TOS yet. I just remember seeing a few episodes, such as the Khan episode, "City at the Edge of Tomorrow" and "Trouble for Tribbles" in Star Trek marathons on TV once in a while when I was a kid. I remember liking them, though!

MisterBibs posted:I think you've got it backwards. Hasn't it been long established that in terms of popularity, the folks who like DS9 and hate Voyager are the outliers? Actually, I've found that Voyager is the most popular among the general public types. People who don't self-identify as Trek fans seem to prefer Voyager. I've asked some of them why and it's like they suddenly start speaking . I hear the words and it is in a language I speak but I simply can't understand how they came to that conclusion. The one that broke my mind most of all was my roommate at the time who, even after spending a couple of years where we watched every episode of DS9 and Babylon 5 both, still preferred Voyager. That said, one must recall that within the Trek community, or what's left of it after decades of abuse and neglect, there are still members of the Old Guard for whom it's TOS or nothing, as well as the diehard TNG fans, both of whom object to DS9 as having deviated too far from "Gene's vision". And off in the corner the poor sad Enterprise fans are still muttering about how "the last couple of seasons were pretty good, we swear!" and "Fuckin' Riker". What doesn't exist, as far as I can tell, is JJTrek fans. I mean yes, there are people who like those movies, but I've yet to meet someone who identifies primarily as a JJTrek fan. And why would they? Those films were standard Hollywood action films with a layer (and a thin layer at that) of Trek painted on the surface. It'd be like identifying yourself as a Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit fan. No one's going to do that because that film was disposable entertainment, and so were the JJTrek films and, in all likelihood, so will be Episode VII next year. Anyway, even though we can be a little echo chambery in here about our DS9 love, we should recall that there are legitimate Trek fans out there who prefer the older, more utopian vision or who find the Kirk-Spock-McCoy thing to be the height of Trek. Or who just prefer Picard, maybe.

Netflix rumored to get exclusive new Star Trek Series quote:According to Nemecek, Netflix approached CBS about hosting a new Trek series, then followed up with a proposal to create and produce the show completely in-house. If this deal goes through, the series would be a Netflix exclusive in the vein of House of Cards or Orange is the New Black. Interestingly, CBS is supposedly being offered a royalty deal that would pay it for each stream of the new series. No word on whether the series would be set in the new Abrams alternate timeline or the original one.
