Growers licenses went out a couple months ago. Store licenses are going out now and the first are expected to open next month.

I'm pretty happy Colorado is getting all the hype and weed tourists because weed tourism certainly hasn't made Amsterdam a more pleasant place to live. Weed should be legal but being an island of legality sucks, and I am thrilled Colorado is taking the bullet for us there.

Maybe in a 'Dig a hole, fill it back up' kind of way.

But yeah, I've done it before; it's lovely. But I was working 7 days a week while part-time at 39 hours/week with no benefits, getting paid below cost of living. I'm not sure how much of the suck was the job versus the context.

The only way to make it not absolute garbage as a multi-hour job is to listen to podcasts or audiobooks on headphones while you work.

So, those of you who followed Seattle's most recent mayoral election may remember Peter Steinbrueck--an also-ran candidate whose platform was basically "Not In My Back Yard"--who dropped out and endorsed Ed Murray not too terribly long into the election. Well, per the Seattle Times, Steinbrueck was just given a just-barely-not-six-figure no-bid consulting contract with the city. The mayor sees no problem with this.

Honestly, my main problem with it is that Steinbrueck is an anti-development rear end in a top hat; the barely-deniable quid pro quo is just gravy.

This is often overlooked. In my experience, I accepted atrophy in order to achieve continual stress and insecurity as a trade-off against homelessness. It sucked, I hated it, and while Republicans might think, "But your ilk have female literacy and the refrigeration of food (without even attending church)," it completely misses the point. It's not about access to the modern day bread and circuses of inexpensive cheeseburgers and free pornography; it's about continual stress and continual insecurity.

City departments are allowed to award consultant contracts of $280,000 or less without competitive bidding, as long as the consultant has been cleared as a part of a city roster of approved consultants.

Not sure about Seattle in particular, but in other places you compete for it. You write a proposal and probably go to some kind of interview, just like if you are bidding on a specific project. Then they pick the qualified people to go on the magic list: either a fixed number of them or everyone who meets some minimum technical and financial criteria.

Instead of the city having to go through the relatively expensive RFP and selection process every time they need some tiny bit of work done, they can do it once and then use a 10D roll or something to pick a qualified consultant from the list when the time comes.

edit: This is actually more fair than the more common practice of doing the same thing but only picking one consultant for an on-call/IDIQ contract for $X million over Y years and being stuck with them for the next Y years no matter what.

Yeah, colloquial and technical usage of the term differs. People tend to consider any wanton shooting as a 'mass shooting' but the FBI requires 4 or more be shot dead, otherwise it adds to a different stat. For example, I think The Virgin Killer only shot 3 people, he stabbed the others, so he'd be counted under something other than Mass Shootings.

Last year Reddit put together a list of American shootings where four or more were shot (disregarding whether the victim died). They came up with 365, making mass shootings a daily occurrence in the United States.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/17/mass-shootings-us_n_3935978.html

edit: This year they're up to 116 mass shootings so far, which is slightly behind where they were last year on Jun. 10 (142).

Agreed. The instant-celebrity given murderers is a troubling aspect of commercial media. The best thing that came out of Elliot Rodger's killing spree was that he was such a ridiculous character that he presents an object of mockery, something less likely to encourage copycatting.

President Obama spoke about the school shooting today during a Tumblr discussion with students at the White House. Pretty much said the same kind of thing that everyone is saying: This is becoming the new norm here in the US, it's terrifying, and Congress refuses to do anything about it even though no other developed nation tolerates it.
