There's no such thing as a bad emotion; anger helps us stand up for ourselves and fight back, worry makes us hesitate and consider consequences and fear as mentioned helps us avoid unnecessary risk. Not entirely sure about grief but if nothing else it makes us act in a way that invites sympathy from others at a time when we are most vulnerable. And stress is not an emotion any more than pain is.

Two questions 1. Why is this a picture taken of a sheet of paper? 2. In the story, did anyone make this offer to the homeless man or did they just continue not caring about him?

I don't know how it is in other countries, but in America it's mostly about memorization and recitation of whatever you're presented with. Our history books are white-washed, our science books have pages torn from them, our literature is sanitized, or government and economic courses talk about how lovely everyone else has it but don't challenge our own systems at all. Teachers who toe the line are in danger of reprimand or termination. Critical thinking is often neither rewarded nor encouraged. Now, I'm sure there are some sensible school districts out there and things are worse in some areas of the country than others. Private schools are often worse, because they have much looser standards of education. Still, public schooling as a whole is hosed and I don't blame your teacher friend for being bitter about it.

Then I abandoned that idea because I started to learn about all the hosed up problems with the education system and how miserable my life would be. Even the teachers who inspired me begged me to go into another career because their jobs are so hosed up.

Sorry but your original post was a crazy statement full of generalizations and sensationalism. The US education system has its flaws but it's not something that can be summed up in an image macro. Also, it's probably a good thing you didn't become a teacher because with that attitude your students would have been miserable.

Oh my parents were teachers as well as quite a few of my others friends; I know how miserable they all are and don't blame them. Education policy in the UK is and has been pretty terrible for decades, they are in the process of actively undermining public education to ease the progression of privatisation and every year the media talks about how easy exams are nowadays and awful and lazy teachers are. I still find it funny that a teacher would post it though.

That public schools leave kids unprepared for adulthood and unable to think for themselves seems like something easy to get on board with until you realize that the alternative is loving homeschooling.

The Time Dissolver posted:That public schools leave kids unprepared for adulthood and unable to think for themselves seems like something easy to get on board with until you realize that the alternative is loving homeschooling. The other thing is that it is very hard to tell if a given policy is working until quite a few years go by. It's not like you can take an under-performing school, class, or student and turn them around instantly if you just had the right policy. It takes time, and a lot of it; as well as consistently good teachers and a productive school environment to affect positive change. It would be very surprising to see almost every student leave school "fully prepared for life" (whatever that means) short of doing some very radical things (like <8 person classes and overwhelmingly powerful incentives for the right people to become teachers).

And a lot of people are stupid and believe that everyone has the ability to teach when most people just plain suck at breaking down information, finding meaningful ways of using information in assignments, repeating and reviewing information enough so that others can learn it, and so on.

I've lurked this thread for awhile and often don't get too many crazies but I've found a few gems recently. Context: Some guy I met at gay pride festival in the city and was casual friends for a time a few years ago. This came out of nowhere. Context: An EMT I used to work with. Why yes the Koran says bestiality is OK. Context: 400+lbs Paramedic I know. Nice dude overall. I'm usually picky with adding people on Facebook since most of the people I work with in public safety just post "IMPEACH OBAMA" and "CANT TAKE ARE GUNS" all the time.
