Car/light truck tires don't really explode when punctured that way. The frat nearest my dorm room sophomore year had a car smash party (one of the brothers had bought a beater car only to find out that no, you can't register without a title in mass, no matter what web of lies the previous owner spins for you, so they did a fundraising event, pay x amount and you get to smash such and such a part) and no one else was brave enough to slash the tires so my brother and I did it. First of all, it's surprisingly tough to do and a folding knife that doesn't lock back is going to gently caress you over, and second, it takes a lot of pressure unless you have a butterfly knife or double edged knife or something, which we didn't.

And then they make a disappointingly quiet hissing/flatulent sound and go flat.

Now, a heavy truck tire at 50+ PSI or a tire that's very very old and about to blow out anyways? Look the gently caress out, because poo poo will change in a hurry when you weaken it more by slicing/tearing a hole in it.

Plus, not only is the hole in the car tire very small (~35 psi x at best an 1/8 square inch hole equals not a lot of force), the smaller air volume means that pressure drops off a lot faster than an equivalent hole in a truck tire.

How fast are these people backing out of parking spots? Because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't manage that at 5 mph.

Judging by the way people drive in the local grocery store parking lot?

Probably 25 to 30 mph.

6mph full width rear impact in a VW golf does $3000 damage. If i hit a building at 6mph with my lincoln, all it would do is move the building over a foot.

edit: There was one i can't find, i think it was backing a CR-V into a pole at 6mph does like $9000 damage.

Honestly? In 99% of cases, if you manage to hit something huge and immobile at speeds that low, you weren't paying attention to your surroundings anywhere near well enough to be operating a two ton missile at any speed, and deserve to pay out the rear end for your mistake; call it idiot tax.

Now, if you get rear-ended by someone else that's a different story, but in that case their insurance should be covering it anyway.

gently caress any body shop that would charge you over $700 for that front-end Mazda 6 impact. There's no damage at all.

EDIT: Jesus, the full-width rear impact is the same thing.

Body panels no, but the actual crash structure underneath is probably deformed.

Yeah, but most people don't realize it's a bumper cover + paint and a foam backer. And body shops are full of retards who have spent way too long breathing paint fumes.

When I had my Stratus, I once rear-ended an Accord that left a traffic light then suddenly stopped for a soggy cardboard box in the road. It was raining and I couldn't keep my brakes from locking up, and I couldn't have been going more than 12 MPH when I hit them; the airbags didn't even pop. However, the crash did over $6,000 worth of damage to my car and rendered it undrivable (the Accord ended up with just a notch punched out of their bumper about a foot-and-a-half across).
