Once, leaving the movie theater just outside of navy pier around 2am in Chicago, I saw a late model Diablo open up WOT right in front of me and blast down the street. It was a religious experience.

Agreed with Kastein I would probably have been fired on the spot if I soldered someone's laptop power input jack like that and it's shameful for them to charge you $80 for that kind of work. I mean to be fair it may have taken like an hour or so of labor to disassemble and reassemble the laptop depending on how much of a pain in the rear end it is but that doesn't matter if their employee does not know how to solder worth a dinghy. vvv Jesus christ you make the best posts on this entire drat forum please never stop posting. vvv puberty worked me over fucked around with this message at 18:16 on Jun 14, 2014 |

I wouldn't, every time you pull a multipin through hole component off a board with plated through holes you risk PTH damage and breaking a midlayer connection off the PTH, doing it again won't do you any good and may make things worse. Use braid to drain each hole, then reflow with a powerful enough iron (that was probably caused by a hack butcher with a weak iron trying to make do) and clean the flux up if it isn't regular rosin or lightly activated rosin. Cleanup is semi optional with those fluxes. Whoever did that was trying to use a weak iron. Problem is, heavy power jacks and stuff like that have a lot of midlayer connections (since typically the power pins are fed to the regulators through a mid layer to save outer layers for signaling)which means many heavy thermal reliefs from the pad to the midlayer copper pours. So you need much more heat to solder them properly. Not "gorilla with a tinsmiths soldering gun" heat, just more than a typical pencil iron can provide.

Maybe I've been lucky, but traffic where we just moved hasn't been too bad. And on the bike it doesn't matter even if it does get lovely. I have a 45ish mile commute, half interstate and half highway (I-15 to 76 all the way over to 5, for any local goons) and it takes me about 50m, if I get stuck at a lot of lights.

If you weren't on the other side of the world somewhere I would say bring it over with a sixpack and it will be done in 30min. Speaking of melting metal. I love my second newest welder (I have a problem ok, I only own three welders, I can stop anytime I want) so much. Just accidentally burned through a piece of quarter inch plate while welding it to a 1 inch plate. Waiting for the welder to cool down (hit the 60% duty cycle and it started splattering) then it is back to melting poo poo together. And today is the best day for welding outside, too, it's like 60 degrees and partially cloudy.

Sandbagger and I just put the new valve spring on the 5 ton, all it needs now is stuff I can do myself. Having a second person around to turn the engine from underneath while I checked if the piston was at top dead center was really helpful. The old one was broken into FOUR PIECES. E: my $15 home depot plumbing and hardware aisle valve spring compressor performed admirably.
