I'd think something that's not too bright by nature, like Ethiopians. Maybe something from Indonesia or Brazil? I've found their more balanced, earthy flavors easy to stomach even when it's slightly bitter or sour.

I'm looking around for a coffee with a particular flavor profile. A while ago, I worked at this cafe where we had this coffee from Atomic Cafe that tasted amazing. It was low acidity, but the really characteristic thing about it was that it tasted exactly like chocolate. Only caveat? It was decaf.

Any goons know of any coffees with a similar chocolate-y taste that still has that precious, precious caffeine? Bonus points if it's a goon owned roastery that roasts it.

I've been playing around with different coffees here and there in my espresso for about a year, and I find that this Fancy Bourbon Santos from Brazil makes a pretty good espresso.

The coffee you linked is Brazilian, and the flavors you're describing are pretty typical of a good Brazilian coffee, so that's where I'd start. :v::coffee:

Espresso... in SPACE Space Space space

quote:

ISSpresso to deliver astronauts' caffeine fix on board the ISS

For all the hundreds of millions of pounds spent designing, building and maintaining the International Space Station it seems that up till now the astronauts on board have been missing one thing: a decent cup of coffee.

Thankfully, this November the ISS will be getting a proper caffeine fix in the form of the ISSpresso: a specially-designed machine created by Italian coffee manufacturer Lavazza and aerospace specialist Argotec that is capable of producing an “authentic Italian espresso” in space.

The ISSpresso weighs 20kg and includes “back-ups of all the critical components,” with a heavily-modified design tackling the unique problems of making coffee in a microgravity environment as the ISS hurtles through space nearly 400km above Earth.

The plastic tube that normally delivers water in coffeemakers has been replaced by a steel tube capable of resisting pressures of over 400 bar to ensure that no liquids escape and the final product is served not in an espresso cup but in a sealed plastic pouch that lets the astronauts suck up their morning shot with a straw – rather than chase it around the zero G ISS.

quote:

For similar reasons the ISSpresso doesn’t grind its own beans – and instead uses a capsule system capable of producing “not only a regular espresso, but also a caffè lungo or hot beverages, such as tea, infusions and broth, so that food can also be rehydrated.”

I've been thinking about buying my parents this as an upgrade from their years old Delonghi brewer from Walmart, but I'm wondering if they would even notice a difference since all they use is preground coffee (Or the old beans that I roasted).

You guys think it'll be worth it for them?

Woop goon owned coffee company here . I'm the mart if you want to see more. In regards to that Kenyan bean anything marked "aa" from Kenya is considered top stuff. There's ab and then pb. I just checked on That gakayuni and it's scheduled to come in according to one importer I use but they have it marked for April delivery so there's some issue. It's aa so it will be similar quality but tastes could be different because different lots. Sometimes the names are just mills where the coffee is brought. And that mill may service hundreds of farms.

I've been considering sampling some Kenyans to better our palete for tastes so maybe if your ok with waiting a bit i can send some from the sample table? Pm me maybe?

I wholeheartedly agree and wholeheartedly disagree. One of the best cups of coffee I've ever had was maxwell instant enjoyed one perfect morning on a backwoods camping trip. Whether they make a serviceable cup of coffee, though, the pod machines are a bit of a ripoff and produce quite a bit of needless waste.

Oh yeah, for the money it's a total waste that produces more literal waste than it needs to. Definitely no question about that.

My espresso machine (refurb gaggia classic) arrives tomorrow! Some of the accessories I ordered (knock box, frothing pitcher, steam wand) came in today. I'm very excited.

... of course, the Vario I ordered won't arrive until Thursday, but I guess I can still play around with my Infinity.

Nice. I've been researching a bunch lately and I've decided on the CC1/Vario package of Seattle Coffee Gear. I'm in the process of moving so I gotta wait another week to order it, but I'm psyched!

I wish there was a great affordable semi-auto machine just for espresso. I don't need the milk part at all. I looked at the ROK espresso but the reviews are too varied and some say you can't get crema from it.

Nah, I was leaning towards the same setup as you but ended up going with the CC1 because:

1) I got 10% off the whole purchase bringing it down to 900 instead of 1000
2) I know I'll end up modding the Gaggia to install the PID and the Silvia wand mod, bringing the total cost near that of the CC1 anyways.
3) I suck at modding things*

*see prior mods: Saltwater Aquarium mods, misc. gun mods. I suck at tinkering with things and in the case of the aquarium, I spent way more on the modded version than I would have if I just bought the whole shebang up front.

The Classic has a lot of things going for it, namely the durability of it and it being a well-known brand. The digital aspects of the Crossland and the short time-frame of it being around worry me a bit, but one thing I've realized from coffee spergs on HB and CG forums is that both Baratza and Crossland are two brands that have been very well supported.

I was on craigslist looking for a cheap Gaggia Classic or something I could clean up and throw a PID on or something. The only $50+ espresso machine I could find locally was a mint condition Brewtus IV for $650, so I bought it because they go for like $1000+ even in heavily used condition, and I'm not one to pass up a great deal / pricing error. So now I have a pretty crazy high end espresso machine I guess?

I mean, if you just get a good cheap semi-auto like the gaggia classic, you're not really losing much on the milk part. It's not like you're buying a double-boiler and only using one of the boilers.

It seems like a good product ruined by bad distributor relationships and inability to arrange any manufacturing capacity. They're constantly in some limbo saying they'll have some "soon"

When I pushed the power/pulse button, I could hear electricity going to the motor but nothing else would happen. I tried everything, took it apart, read their PDFs for troubleshooting, etc. I couldn't diagnose the problem. Ended up taking me 3 units to get one that worked. Nearly a month to get a good grinder. But the one I have now works great! It was hand-tested by someone in their Quality department.

That's sad to hear. I bought a factory refurb from them 3 years ago and it was good as new. I think they even threw in a spare hopper or something.

I'm sure the majority are fine, but I can't imagine we're having hundreds ordered through this thread alone and I've seen several reports. Given the condition mine was in, there's no way someone could have looked at it or attempted to clean it before shipping. I emailed with them and received an unsatisfactory response, so if people are being shipped grinders that do not function I can't imagine they're taking any steps to fix the problems in their QC department.

This was a long time ago at this point (2011), but yes, I called them twice, left messages and never heard back. Had a long email exchange where eventually they sent me some Grindz and the wire brush that was supposed to be included with the thing. Given that I'm writing about it now anyway, after owning my Baratza Maestro for quite some time I'd say it's not much better than the ancient semi-broken Capresso that it replaced. Works fine for pour over and Aeropress, but has a lot of fines and makes mediocre French Press due to the inconsistent grind. I'm not sure what I'll replace this thing with if/when it dies. Despite the complaints, it still works and I use it almost every day, so given the refurbished price I can't be too upset nor am I aware of a better option at the price point.
