What I've heard is that it's the Arabic word for 'infidel', and was used by Arab merchants in eastern Africa for non-Muslim blacks. Which makes it kinda funny that Freepers would use it.

Let the record show that in 2008 I was probated for using the term "kaffir" in Gibbis. In fairness, I was speaking on behalf of Muslim Somali troops fighting against Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. Presumably if I'd used the spelling "kuffar" I might've been okay, just the Souf Effriken flavour of the spelling I used got me.
