I always hoped this day would come for Layzner---oddly enough, I think the first time I'd heard of the plight it suffered was an offhand mention in Genshiken.

No idea what all they are going to work on from here, but it isn't like there's any bad choices as far as I know, so let the mecha goodness roll onward.

I've been waiting for this since the time skip and it's finally here.

Oh what a joyous occasion! I was just talking with a buddy last night about the fact that Layzner hadn't been finished, and in fact only had one episode left. Now if only someone would rip the subtitles and throw them on the Blu Rays.

Also, if only someone would finish translating Dragonar.

When I saw they had 1 episode to go I was all "Boy, I really can't wait for them to sub that last episode"

Turns out that would take half a year!

Oh well, the important thing is that it's done.

(But I guess in hindsight apparently the OVA expands upon that final episode or something anyways?)

Del Toro just announced several new Pacific Rim projects, including an animated series that'll be released before the sequel sometime in 2017. Someone on /m/ also linked this Youtube video of Del Toro, Rinko Kichuki and the actress for young Rinko on a Japanese TV show, with Del Toro seeing several Gundam things.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-zCQGA4fdY

Del Toro seems like a really cool guy. He's so happy to see all the Gundam stuff.

Edit: Obari has already tweeted that he wants to do the opening animation for the cartoon. I wouldn't discount it actually happening considering how in to the whole Gundam/anime thing Del Toro is, how well versed in the fanbase he and Travis Beachem are and how open Obari is about his love for the film.

I'm not entirely unconvinced this is all part of Obari's master plan to get Pacific Rim into the next SRW trilogy.

I'm also totally fine with Obari animating the entire cartoon, really.

/m/ is currently attempting to secure Obari that opening by retweeting it to Travis Beachem and the Pacific Rim twitter account, along with their facebook accounts and then sending Del Toro an email with what is essentially a CV for Obari composed of some of his pictures and YouTube videos of his animations along with the interview where he talked about loving Pacific Rim.

The internet is a strange and beautiful place at times.

Obari designed Dancougar, Dancougar Nova, Gravion, Compatible Kaiser, Dangaioh, and a whole host of other loving awesome robots. Dude loves his boobies but he's basically a glorious mecha otaku who pours his heart and soul into every project he's involved in.

See I personally couldn't finish Godannar because of the excessive fanservice so I'm a little wary about this. But giving the job to someone who has not just a ton of experience but also really, really likes the subject matter is hardly a bad idea.

Anyway, I'm pretty excited to see what new robots we'll be getting out of all these Pacific Rim spin-offs. I don't usually like the American style of robot design so much (love my brightly coloured goofy super robots), but all the Jeagers looked really cool. Can't wait to see what else they'll come up with.

See the thing is I didn't know Obari did robot stuff. Upon a glance at his Wikipedia page, the only thing he's been involved in that I've actually seen is Detonator Orgun, and I had no clue he was involved with that.

Up until now I thought all he made was fanservice garbage and literal porn and apparently that's not actually true at all. :psyboom:

I bet Obari would design some badass Jaegers if you gave him the chance. He can toe the line between super and real very well, even if he clearly likes supers more. I really like Gravion and Dancouga but Jaegers would have to be more like Dangaioh and Shurouga.

Yeah, the fanservice in Godannar goes beyond ridiculous but god drat is Godannar awesome as hell.

Recently when I think of Obari, I just think of the scenes in the recent SRW OG anime when the Huckbein was extremely detailed out of fuckin nowhere. The man loves his giant tits and his giant robots.

You see, I loving hate Godannar but I love the idea of Obari doing the opening to a Pacific Rim cartoon. I mean, look at the goddamn Dragonar opening, and then imagine that but with Jaegers.

My only problem is that I don't know if I can survive the hype for two years.

My experience with mecha shows is pretty much limited to Go Nagai/Ken Ishikawa stuff, Tomino/Kawamori stuff and a couple of ripoffs of them here and there, and Gainax shows. :v: I have seen Code Geass, GaoGaiGar, Gunbuster, Mazinkaiser (which I actually own on DVD), and unfortunately MD Geist off of that list but that's still not very much and it doesn't seem like he was really heavily involved in any of them.

You can watch Mazinkaiser SKL without anything else, it has no connections to any other Mazinger story (as far as I know, anyways). That said, it clearly was MEANT to have some connection to something or at least more time, considering how we're shown hints of backstory that go absolutely nowhere.

It's still pretty good in a violent, insane sort of way. It really is what happens when you give Batshit Ryouma and Hayato Mazinkaiser to pilot.

Awesome. To be honest, I'm just not interested in any other Mazinger, or any of the classic super robot franchises. SKL looks so badass though. I was going to watch it months ago but either kept getting distracted and putting it off or got confused about if it was canon with anything else and never thought to just ask someone.

I decided to do so today because I was thinking about Evangelion and realized that aside from G Gundam and a little bit of Wing I never really got into any mechanical mecha shows. After this I might try GaoGaiGar. From what I've read it really sounds like something I'll love.

Srice

I was pretty lukewarm about Mazinkaiser SKL. It probably didn't help that it has been the only Mazinger thing we've seen since the impeccable Shin Mazinger, but the fact that a 3 episode OVA had to resort to reusing animation was p dang shameful. Plus all the story bits were kinda dreadfully dull because the characters were incredibly one dimensional in a way that made it hard to care about them.

I think as far as mindless action goes I enjoyed the original Mazinkaiser OVA more.

GaoGaiGar is awesome and definitely deserves to be watched.

About Mazinger, while Mazinkaiser SKL is fun, I'd recommend Shin Mazinger a lot more. Just start from episode 2, episode 1 makes no sense. SKL is fun in a mindless violence sort of way, but Shin Mazinger is actually enjoyable in how well-written it is (and how loving AWESOME it is)
