Moonlight Sculptor is entertaining but it's very much "fan translation of a light novel" quality writing.

This was a pretty great chapter. I laughed a lot and it ended with legitimate drama. If she's been raised constantly training and never really interacting with people, her personality makes sense. I like that all the women in this manga seem to have their own poo poo going on.

In many stories women seem to orbit the main character and in this one in particular almost every single character has something going on in the background. He intersects with them for a time and then they both go off on their merry way. "You saved me. What do I owe you?" *Squabbling ensues and awkward, incorrect signals are thrown.* "Fine. I want you,” he said, “to get me a doughnut. A real, genuine, Korean doughnut. Not some glamoured doughnut. An actual one. Freshly made.” “Likest thou jelly within thy doughnut?” “Nay, but prithee, with sprinkles ‘pon it instead,” he said solemnly, “and frosting of white. The weird sticking to obligation and asking for nothing reminded me of the Dresden Files for a minute.

I really can't wait for a time when he finally puts some points into wisdom and unlocks another god-tier bullshit skill because of it, or makes a skill like sense danger properly useful. Fire girl being clueless because of her low int was pretty rad too. Also, re-reading some of the old ones he really should just pop int up to 90 and leave it there. That way he can go get the divine skill from the chunbu clan that his friend was freaking out over the thought of him having. After all, that was a major reason he started pumping int in the first place. Given how bullshit all of his skills are, imagine what he can do with grade-A secret clan bullshit techniques! I'm guessing the Chunbumoon weren't supposed to reveal the techniques of the other clans to outsiders. I doubt its going to be touched on, but that could cause some political fallout. I did some heavy reading this weekend, including getting a good deal further into LMS. I like it but it doesn't really change after the first couple of volumes. It generally gets better, sure, but if you don't like the first few novels there's no reason to keep reading. A translation group picked up the Re:monster novels. They only picked it up a week ago and they're already up to chapter 4. The manga so far has covered up to the middle of chapter 2, so there's quite a bit more content to use to judge it. I think it's going to turn out well enough, though the world is even more game-like than just having the levels and evolution as gimmicks. On the same site that was hosting the RM novels I noticed another series, Ark. I read what was translated, which wasn't much, and it was basically identical to LMS; if both of these were western novels there would be lawsuits flying. That being said it wasn't really any worse than LMS, and there's not much translated, so I guess if you like LMS and want more you could give it a look.

The thing that gets to me about Re:Monster is how things go too well for the protagonist. As one example he loses something and then a few days later just happens to find something insanely good to replace it (and it's a fairly specific replacement). Plus his ability's even more game-breaking than that of the MC of The Gamer. By contrast, in LMS, the protagonist works hard for everything that comes to him. Nothing feels like it's just handed to him. Yeah, he gets lucky on some occasions, but a lot of that's from taking unconventional approaches that cause him to stumble onto obscure (and often fiendishly difficult) quests. While he's a bit too ridiculously talented, he's depicted as having a number of personality flaws that cause him to overlook some things. As for The Gamer, well, we all know this protagonist given this is the thread about the webcomic he's in. He has a blatantly ridiculous ability but is still lacking compared to a lot of people. Even now, his best friend would probably trounce him. He has gamebreaking potential, but it's one that takes more work to get up there. Plus he's a comedy protagonist so there're plenty of jokes at his expense. I guess I like The Gamer and LMS's protagonists better than Re:Monster's because they get more to humanize them beyond being game-breaking min-maxers. And Re:Monster has some cool ideas but it comes off even more as wish fulfillment (they kinda all are, but Re:Monster feels even more so).

Re:Monster also hasn't even had half of the first novel translated yet, so there's still time. I also don't like him losing his arm and, coincidentally, finding a super rare legendary artifact prostetic arm right away. It's just stupid. I enjoy it so far but also agree with your criticism; if the entire series is just him getting stronger and stronger without any character development or facing real challenges then it won't be worth continuing to read. I'm going to give it more time.

Honestly, the only thing making me want to keep reading is seeing what races the other goblins evolve into and overall how they do. By this point I don't really give a poo poo about the protagonist.

Yeah I figured that, I was just making it explicit and giving context for anyone else reading the thread who doesn't mind being spoiled even if it's only the first half of the first volume. I think it's a bit premature to drat the whole series, but at the same time people without some tolerance for contrivances probably shouldn't bother.

Anybody want to start up a re: monster thread since it's starting to get some decent discussion in? I know I recommended it first but the google doc seems to indicate that the series has way more wish fulfillment than I care for. There's a whole day dedicated to tentacle porn.

I was reading it at https://www.japtem.com. They're hosting it for the same translation group that's working in that google doc, but it's not as far along yet. It looks like the google doc includes stuff that they haven't edited or finalized. edit: Yeah, in the chapter 5 the series goes for pure wish-fulfillment in the worst way. If this is the content in the first volume I can only assume it gets worse. I doubt enough people can stomach it to sustain a thread of its own. e2: Not that I'm saying to keep the discussion in this thread either, it doesn't seem like SA is the right place to discuss this series for the people who keep reading. Regarding Re:Monster. I read the Google doc and it starts out interesting but gets boring later on, I think. Regarding The Gamer. I've been saying all along. Get that INT stat to 90 and learn the uber divine technique and then move on from there. The Redheads request reminded me of Arakawa Under the Bridge. He just couldn't take that answer either.

Well, so much for ReMonster then. If you want a poorly-translated LN series about MMO mechanics that doesn't involve tentacles I recommend Legendary Moonlight Sculptor instead. For some reason I'm addicted to reading about a guy leveling up crafting skills in a VR MMO and there's like 20 translated volumes.

I'd be pretty content with a 2:1 time ratio myself. He still has plenty of stuff to train, and doesn't need to fight anything to level it up. Still, he does need to fight more things to get that sweet, sweet money and invisible hat drops. He better use the hat of invisibility soon, that things so sweet.

Nice to see a teenage character in a fantasy comic actually getting kind of worried and confused when their parents decide to leave all of a sudden! Most of the time you see adolescent characters just sort of getting along just fine even when their parents are just mysteriously "gone" for some reason, so it's kinda neat to see Jee-Han worrying about bills and other necessities.

SSNeoman posted:Welp. Eother about 2 million girls are gonna move in to his place, or he's gonna get ambushed in his house by other Abyss members. Fingers crossed for the second. Only a 2:1 change for time? After the healing, curse removal, mana powers, zombie slaying powers, zombie creating powers and being number one with a baseball bat I guess bending the fabric of space and time to your will isn't good enough until you get super slo-mo. I'm eagerly awaiting the day where he gets his poo poo wrecked for being a munchkin. Super powerful in so many ways, but his defense and movement based powers are abysmal. I know he has a mana shield, but when your power to defend runs off your power to attack and heal you need a backup plan in case you run out of mana.

Come on. You know basic attacks suck poo poo in Korean MMOs. He needs Mega Mana Regen. Or be on a constant potion IV. I'm still hoping his power manifests as something other than Korean MMOish, because those are boring and predictable.

Perhaps it was just to show motion, but I find it interesting in that you see his mom point down at his feet and he then falls into a hug. It's an indication she has magical powers as well.
