Guessing the back half of a truck frame was welded onto the unibody and then a bed stuck on top and an axle installed. I doubt the rear brakes even work.

You'll see them in Mercedes Benz dealers because they're distributed by them, but yeah no MB badged versions here.

They are all aggressively terrible. They ride and accelerate like a shopping cart, the transmission shifts obnoxiously hard, the engine is loud and thrashy, and they vibrate like a paint shaker. Zero redeeming qualities, unless you count the feeling of smug self-satisfaction.

Pretty sure I saw a couple stand-alone Smart retailers at some point around here, but one of the issues of Canada is loving low population density, so it's not uncommon to see dealers of specialized goods arrange to get distributed by an established brand of equal standing.

Like one of the bigger dealers in Montreal has dedicated Mitsubishi, Subaru and Volvo dealerships, and through them sells Jaguar, Lotus, Lamborghini, Land Rover and an impressive amount of classic or exotic used cars.

Toronto might be a different game, but yeah, it's not like say LA or New York.

Driving to work the other day, I saw this.

This begs a couple of questions.

1) Porsche makes a space saver spare for 911s? My Cayman just came with a can of slime.
2) 911s are often regarded as unstable in the rear (they're not really), what does this do to the handling?

Queen_Combat

Begging the question is implying an answer you want by phrasing a question a certain way, or asking a question that isn't really a question.
:goonsay:

I see pictures of a spare tire mount that goes in the space behind the passenger seat, but it looks bulky and ugly as hell.

I figure that's more of a "drive at very carefully to the nearest tyre shop" spare than a "drive about for a few weeks till I can be arsed" one.

I once forgot that I had gotten a flat that morning and after a long day at work I took a right handed corner a bit spiritedly on the way home. In a rear wheel drive car, with a space saver on the rear right. Was very glad for good traction control that day, because that's the only time I've ever experienced oversteer when I've been not expecting it whatsoever, at 60mph, with oncoming traffic. Eek.

Because the cayman is for poors :smug:

Real answer: that shape 911 predates the proliferation of slime instead of a real spare, the boxster was one of the very first cars on the market that carried no spare.

The parts for it are on back order and there's supposedly 2 in front of it for the same issue, so it's definitely not just one issue.

I loved driving it, but I didn't buy a brand new car cause I love writing checks, I bought it because I wanted something reliable.

Gonna be getting something used and easy to work on.

There's something about a Dodge car that says "Why not a Honda?" or at least a Ford if you're going to buy American. Unless you're getting a Challenger or something, I'm not sure what the point of getting one is when a similar amount of money could put you in a Toyota or a Honda. Same goes for GM econo cars.

It sounds like they are universally poo poo. I read a story a while back that 60-70% of Darts rolling off the production line needed extensive rework before they passed quality control. Granted, it is normal for some cars coming off the line to need rework before they pass inspection, but according to the story the Dart was experiencing problems far beyond what would be considered a normal rate.

That sad thing is it's not fun. Like someone mentioned earlier, the trans is unbelievably bad, the engine is wheezy and feels underpowered (which is pathetic given the car weighs 1800lbs) the interior is crap, the seating position is terrible, and it's just embarrassing to be in. People give you stares for all the wrong reasons.

The Honda is probably as much or more 'American' as a Dodge, trapped in a garage because its Fiat engine is making GBS threads the bed

Buddy at work got one about a year ago. After the 6th time back to the dealership he was so pissed he traded it straight-up (he paid cash for the car initially, so truly straight-up) to his cousin for a 2004 Durango. It's been back to the dealer another 3 times since then. And it's not even that good if you ignore the ridiculous QC issues.

I might be reading this wrong but what are you saying? I was always under the impression that Hondas were little golden workhorses like Toyotas. I drive a scion and while the interior is nothing to brag about and it shows it's cheapness and affordability but that Toyota engine always makes me feel good about the purchase. That and I haven't had any issues in 3 1/2 years aside from standard maintenance.

My wife's Fiesta was also a good purchase because she only puts on a whopping 3-4k miles a year so that car is going to last forever.

Every Dodge sedan or econo car just reminds me of all the friends I had with Neons that always had problems.

He's saying it's no more American than the Honda. It's built on a Fiat platform with a Fiat engine; it's basically a re-skinned Alfa Romeo Giuletta, only without the stunning good looks to go along with the Italian Soul (crippling reliability issues).

This, and the Honda is most likely assembled domestically, with a similar domestic/import parts content as 'domestics' like the Dodge or Fords, so talking about 'buying American' being a reason to go with one of the latter instead of the former is just playing to stereotypes. It gets especially muddy depending on if you consider Canadian or Mexican manufacture to be 'domestic'; I Might Be Adam mentions the Challenger, but that's a Canadian-built car with a Mexican Hemi.

I was not suggesting the Honda had a Fiat engine and apologize for my perhaps unfortunate comma placement

The justification I usually see is "well, the money still ends up overseas."

Never mind all the American manufacturing jobs created from that foreign money, or the fact that the Japanese cars helped usher in more efficient American cars that reduce dependence on petroleum (if only a little bit, compared to how much crude we use in total, but I digress,) them drat slanteyes is taken err jerbs.

Thanks for clarifying. I know a little about domestic/foreign car companies sharing ownership of brands or merging but I wasn't sure if I was reading it right or not. The Dart sounds even worse now. My previous assumptions were based on QC issues of Dodge alone.
