Season One is the best season of TPA. I like all of them, but if you're going to get any of them, the first season is pretty much all of the big hits that everyone loves.

At some point they'll patch it to DX11 which should make it look great, but don't plan on that being soon.

So far, I think it's one of their better tables. It's actually not all that gimmicky. There are a few as there always are, but the gameplay is pretty pinball oriented. A bit more like a real table in terms of sling strength and things being aimed to put you in a bit more danger than is typical for an FX2 table, which I like. I've mostly been playing to complete issues and haven't gotten too much into the other modes and multiballs, but the ones I've started along the way have been mostly normal. I did do the "blind" one where everything goes dark, but aside from the reduced visibility it's still just playing pinball, so I think it works well.

I ended up disabling voiceover in the operator menu because Deadpool never really shuts up, but other than that I don't have many complaints.

Which version are you playing on? I ask because the 360 version needs a few tweaks. At least, in my experience it does. The skill shot actually put the ball into play almost directly into the right outlane a few times, and the center target is a 100% SDTM shot. The whole table seems to be falling into that mix of interesting play but bad habits we saw in the very first Marvel pack.

breaks
May 12, 2001

I'm playing on the PC. The skill shot can drain, but you can nudge it to safety, or the ball saver will help you. The middle shot does return in a dangerous way sometimes, but I haven't had one come back that I thought couldn't be saved. Sometimes a nudge is required, but most of the time just holding up a flipper will get it. If it can't be saved on the 360 it ought to be tweaked a bit. But on the PC at least, I think it puts you in danger pretty often (for a Zen table) but it's fair.

I really wish there was an option to turn of voice samples, particularly on this Deadpool table. I've even mildly enjoyed some of the comics, but the one-liners he spouts in this game are actually grating to the ears they're so awful. Really terrible, unfunny stuff even upon first listen.

It's almost as annoying as the Epic Quest voiceovers. And the giant delay between balls because he's got to act out some little scene at the bottom of the screen -- worse than the soccer table. Not to mention the fake-out it has to do every time at the end of the game, where it pretends you have one more ball. :rolleye:

I tend to turn all sounds off after I play any pinball table in either Zen or TPA a few times and just listen to music while playing. It makes things a lot more enjoyable in a majority of the cases I've found, and sound cues are rarely critical to figuring out what's going on. This isn't really any kind of a real work-around but just figured I'd post in case it helps.

One of the weird things about BK2000 is that one of the wheel awards is Hurry-Up but the wheel target ejects to the upper playfield and the hurry up is hitting the ball through the lane to the top playfield so you can never get the full 200,000 from it.

Big Juicy Melons - Tackiness aside, it's a custom made game that only exists in 4 copies. 2 EMs and 2 solid states.
Kingpin - Along with BBB it's a Capcom prototype that was never put into production. 9 were made.
Varkon - A pinball disguised as an arcade game. It's got a tiny playfield squeezed into an arcade cabinet. 90 ish were made.

Cactus Canyon had a small run (~900 produced) but isn't super rare though it's special in being Williams' last "real" pinball machine. Apart from somewhat unfinished rules it's a good game and you should play it if you haven't.

A lot of EM/early SS games are fairly rare nowadays, not because of limited production runs but because so few have survived. So you should at least try most of them.

Not going, but from the list I'd check out in the following order:

Kingpin - Capcom only 7 in the world, Mark Richies last game, supposed to be really fun
Spirit - rare Trudeau Gottlieb, his 2nd game - same era as Black Hole, not seen in the states much
Big Juicy Melons - only 4 custom built by Dennis Nordman(Whitewater, Dr Dude) and Greg Freres(Dr Dude, Star Trek)
Transporter The Rescue - not many around
Jolly Park - by Spinball a european manufacturer
Varkon - Stand up pinball, pretty fun if shallow only 90 of them made
Whirlwind with Industrial Fan is supposed to be fun to play
Barracora and Fathom just for the art packages

I'd also check out any early 80's Stern titles that are there, they're a lot of fun, and play some woodrails they're interesting.

It looked like crap, a few hours and a dremel with a wire wheel and we now have a nice fresh coin door! I'll get some kinda of sticker to put on it to break up the black a little. It's a really early midway door so maybe I can find a nice midway sticker.
