Yeah your "Well why hasn't it been an issue before now" argument is really the worst since the actual reason is Native Americans have never had a voice and the white team owners could ignore them and still make money.

No, you're being willfully obtuse. Do you really see no difference between an NFL team using "Redskins" for their name and mascot, including at one time a fight song that had the following lyrics: Scalp 'em, swamp 'um We will take 'um big score Read 'um, Weep 'um, touchdown We want heap more and a small, Native American-run high school? Further, do you not think that changing the highest profile usage of the name "Redskins" wouldn't cause similar names to change?

And in every article I read about it, it's pretty much one or two native Americans that are bothered, but a lot of them don't give a poo poo. There are Native American high schools called the redskins. Why don't we take issue with those too? It was happening as far back as the '40s, but there was a little more focus on the fact that the Redskins and owner George Preston Marshall refused to integrate the team until they were basically forced to by the Kennedy administration in the early '60s. quote:According to one scholar, the campaign against Indian team names can be traced to the 1940s, when the National Congress of American Indians began to fight unflattering stereotypes of Indians across the culture.

Pekin, Illinois used to call their team the Chinks. It was changed in 1980 to the Dragons after national uproar.quote:Until 1975, a Chink and Chinklet ceremony was held before athletic games. A boy and a girl dressed in Chinese attire would walk onto the basketball court to greet a member of the opposing cheerleader squad in the center. They would bow and then escort the opposing squad off the floor. The "Chinese attire" was the coolie hat. They also had a mascot at football games who would dance around and bang a gong whenever the Chinks scored.

Cruel and Unusual posted:Pekin, Illinois used to call their team the Chinks. It was changed in 1980 to the Dragons after national uproar. Yeah, the reason they changed it to the Dragons was because it's a position in the KKK. They're also technically a sundown town, so legally black people aren't allowed to be in the town after 6PM. It's never enforced because they're not THAT stupid. Pekin's the meth capital of Illinois, insert bad jokes here. Does Snyder's appeal have absolutely any legitimacy, or is he just dragging his feet?

I used to back the Redskin name because I was under the impression that it had more support than it really did. It does bug me that there are teams that changed their name from Redmen when they were outright named such because their color was red or ones that used a geographical name and changed it. And North Dakota State's Fighting Sioux because there was actually some backlash from the Sioux that wanted NDSU to keep it. And...to be honest, Chiefs doesn't bother me because it's a rank or social position. I do see where people come from there though. If you changed an Native American chief into a Gallic chieftain to keep the Chiefs name, aren't you just shifting the "making fun of" to a different ethnic group? Its so sticky and thorny. The really vexing thing is that I try to think "what if someone named a team after something from my ethnic background" and I can't come up with a scenario I'd really be offended with. I wasn't completely on board with Notre Dame's black guy as a leprechaun but that's more because a leprechaun, by definition, has to be Irish. That's just an authenticity thing there. Plus he should be wearing red.

My favorite thing about the Pekin Chinks is that in the late 70's an Asain-American group in the school tried to get the name changed, and they put it up for a student vote. The students voted like, overwhelmingly in majority of Chinks.
