Turn 6 is actually a good fight for BLM if they're not dumb and you don't get totally dicked by RNG, more flare chances than any other turn. Sorta like Titan EM if you don't get gaoled. 376 was my last parse.

The short version was that when BLMs are bad they're really bad. They have one dot, don't auto-attack and aside from scathe their GCD attacks need to proc off casted attacks; they're doing next to no damage when they are running around in a panic. It's a job people think is easy because it's rotation is simple but they have probably never seen how much they actually parse.

The buffs they need are slight potency or speed speed buffs for an effective buff of their single target DPS, mobility doesn't need to be buffed or you kill the part of BLM that actually takes skill.

Only BLM buff that's needed is to Scathe. If double damage chance were tied to current Astral stack level (giving BLM 70% of their standing DPS while moving), plus it refreshed the current Astral Ice/Fire stack, I think BLMs would be okay. Nothing fucks your DPS harder than losing stacks after a bad bout of encounter RNG. Vine + bulb (or idiot on the other end of the vine) = gotta ramp up again if you don't have am instant Fire III proc ready.

You can't auto-attack during casts, so it will only go off during a CGD and the point was DPS loss while running; if you're running around chances are you're not in auto-attack range. Not much is also an understatement.

^^^You can stand completely still and never have to use scathe and your potential DPS is still too low for a pure-DPS job. Buffing scathe won't change that. Also keeping stacks in that situation depends on your strategy for floral trap, if you sit in briars you should never lose it. I don't know how line-of-sight method fares for BLM because I've never done it.

Actually, there's an argument to be made to allow a second Firestarter proc to stack instead of just one. This solves a couple problems - being able to sit on a firestarter proc without wasting any means you can "store up" a few seconds of movement without losing DPS, you don't risk triggering two procs back to back and wasting one (if you're spamming Fire as fast as possible), etc. It's a pretty small change that would have a big effect.

Does Greased Lightning screw with your TP regeneration and the TP cost of your attacks, in addition to cast speed and damage? No. Managing Astral stacks is an order of magnitude more important to BLM DPS, lest you have to stand in place for 3 seconds, burning a bunch of MP for half the regular damage to get a full stack back up.

And that's after you've already lost 10 seconds or more of regular rotation DPS time, which is how you lost the stack in the first place.

There's a point to be made about adding/changing a cooldown to throw on a stack of Greased Lightning, like how Warriors have cooldowns that refresh/add stacks of Wrath.

Stop getting angry about video games. I posted the links because I was asked to. I don't care what happens on Excalibur, nor would I suggest a new-to-FFXIV goon roll anywhere else. There are plenty of testimonials in this thread from goons who transferred to Excalibur and are very happy with the decision. I just said it's not a perfect solution to all problems for everyone, which should hardly be controversial. However, if you're having problems in-game and transferring is a viable solution, I'd still say it's your best bet.

The rest of your list makes me realize, however, that there actually is quite a lot of content I've gotten through on my old character that I really don't wanna do again so I guess it's worth the thirty bucks to transfer and fantasia.

I want to ditch my BLM because it's super boring (and given current discussion I guess also super gimp) so that makes me torn between Warrior and Dragoon. I know the answer is always going to be "why not level both" and that's valid I guess but let's say I kind of wanted to focus on a 'main'. Which will be easier to take through the content I'm going to want to take it through? Which is more, well, fun?

Even if you're not convinced that PBC is the right place for you (if you're looking for a smaller guild, or feel like you won't be able to do structured endgame raiding content because everyone who wants to do it already does, or any other reason), Excalibur is definitely the server you want to be on. There are dickloads of guilds on the server, and some of them will be what you're looking for if you decide to leave. Check on the official forums or any host of unofficial forums (I think reddit has a reddit thing for recruitment maybe?) and you'll probably be able to find what you want.

Despite what you may think, a lot of them are recruiting - there are tons of guilds that are just now getting into coil2, guilds that have one coil2 team and are trying to make a second, or guilds losing static members that need replacements. If you have soldiery/CT2(soon)/coil 1 pieces (which you can get relatively quickly), you'll have little problem finding somebody that wants you.

I'd give PBC a shot, at the very least - and if it's not your jam, then go somewhere else. It happens.

It's better to run one of each, but you can do two of either without any serious difficulties. If you're a warrior, you'll need to level a gladiator to 24 anyway to get provoke, and since the two tanks can share a lot of different gear, it's probably a good idea to just take it the rest of the way to 50. It's really easy and painless to level something just by doing your daily roulette every day, so you could do something like max paladin, then do roulette on warrior every day until it's 50. Best of both worlds.

Since the Warrior adjustments a few patches ago most end game groups will take one of each, however running two Paladins is still viable and extremely common opposed to running two Warriors which just doesn't happen for current progression content.

Yeah, you very much are going to want to level both a bit. If you decide to main Paladin, you don't have to go as far into Marauder, but if you want to main Warrior you will absolutely be going 22 levels into Gladiator. Provoke isn't optional, like Swiftcast isn't optional for serious healers. Other things are highly negotiable. It might be useful for a tank to pick up Stoneskin, as there are situations where it's useless for a caster to waste the MP and time on it but it's still moderately useful. Invigorate can be a no-brainer for maximizing effectiveness. No matter what though, you will absolutely want to snag at least some tanking skills from the other tank class.

There are situations where both are useful, so there isn't a wrong choice.

I don't think either need the challenge of maintaining stacks reduced, RNG on fights happen and there is nothing you can do about it, but it is bad RNG that happened to you and not the other DPS so it's not going to wipe the encounter (unless you're carrying). You got screwed out of a good parse it sucks.

Since the DPS ceiling for monk nears 500 they can have bad luck and still top charts. For a BLM wasting GCDs is a lost precious chance to keep up with everyone. Hopefully the buffs raise the ceiling for BLM since it will still keep the same challenge in playing BLM (which I enjoy in many fights, in particular T9 and Titan EM) and buff both the good and bad luck parses.

Is there a quest pass system? I missed the big sale on it on steam and I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger on a 20-30 dollar game that i'm going to have to pay 15 bucks a month to play. I dont mind a monthly fee, But it would be nice to try it out first.

Not sure what a quest pass is, but I assume it's a free trial? FF14's first month is free, but you can't (currently) get around actually buying the game. You should be able to find it for $15 pretty reliably, though. Check SA-Mart if you have to.

Also, if you only want one character -- which is the most common use case by far, since one character can do every class -- it's only $13/month.

edit: It's (still?) USD$12.50 on Amazon right now.
