Anyone else have a political argument running in their head, for a long long time? For my adult life my socialist and social democratic "factions" (in my thoughts, I mean) have been at war, never letting me really make up my mind about Marx, capitalism, and all the stuff my far-left friends think about. I've picked up Ill Fares the Land by Judt and it's really interesting but touching off another round of fierce internal debate.

If I had the power to give myself one moderator power, it'd be a forum suicide bomb that would allow me to ban every single poster on the last page of the Israel thread, myself included.

I think it's a consequence of being open-minded – it's harder to see things through a dogmatic lens when I can't stick to a dogma. There's been a little work in cognitive psychology done on why people hold their worldviews, interesting stuff but there's a long way to go.

But when you tell the PTA you just built a gently caress-off expensive brand new high school ontop of asbestos, they get upset.

So there weren't even any legal requirements to do it, they just tore down a brand new multimillion dollar school because some uninformed people got upset? That's horrible

Asbestos is so loving annoying. Most of the companies that monitor and remove it are run by the same people that installed it in the first place, and they only remove it if its damaged that way they can put "monitor and manage" or some poo poo on the report and you will be legally required to hire them (or their competitors) a few years later to go look at it again. Seems to me like it should be easier to remove if its undamaged and waiting until it gets damaged is just adding further risk and hassle One of the asbestos contractors we used to use loving loved asbestos he gave this presentation that was supposed to be about how dangerous it is but it was just about how its amazing

Tony Judt's funny in this book - he ends up arguing for robust social democracy but I can't quite figure out the details. Except for trains, dude's really mad about UK trains.

Couldn't the council get a geologist, a scientist or doctor with some expertise with asbestos to certify that the rock is harmless? tbh stormfront is largely pretty unfunny but occasionally it just dives headfirst into "andy kaufman is alive" territoryquote:I do let my daughter play video games, but I do research on the games before I let her play them. She seems to like Kirby's Epic Yarn for the Wii, and that Mario Kart game. But I don't think it would be healthy for lets say a teenage to adult male to be interested in either of those games. quote:I have that game, actually, the three games. e: i swear to god i'm not kidding

Conversation Hijack from USPOL thread- Huxley vs Orwell, Round Infinity:haveblue posted:In 1984 the system itself was malicious, but had long since passed the point that any one person could do anything about it. The seemingly malicious characters do their job of spying and torturing on some level because it will happily consume them too if they don't. The best 1984 reenactment I saw was during a peaceful protest around the RNC, where the protesters were treated like terrorists. The funny thing about it was that the police, despite waddling around in full riot gear, were scared out of their minds. You could see they were terrified of the kids running around in the streets with signs, which, of course, is why they were so heavy with the pepper spray and beatings. 1984 did a really good job of describing what imbalanced power looks like when it's flexed, which is why it's the sort of thing that most middle class people who follow the rules don't really see it. They get the BNW treatment, prescribed drugs and afforded cheap cable packages to keep them docile. Pythagoras a trois fucked around with this message at 14:40 on Jul 2, 2014 |

I like to visit the fantasy/sci-fi section of Stormfront every now and then. The last time I went there was a topic where the OP was suggesting that Orcs in World of Warcraft were supposed to represent "the blacks". Thrall, "the young war-chief" apparently is a stand-in for Martin Luther King Jr.
