Hey, I listen to Stern’s interviews sometimes on YouTube, and I just want to check to see whether you guys see some things about these interviews the same way I do. Mostly I just want to articulate some observations. First of all, Stern’s a huge flatterer. He likes to butter people up, but at the same time he likes to make his guests look a little foolish. Sometimes really foolish. But since he’s constantly agreeing with the guests and reassuring them that he’s on their side, it seems like he does it in a way that makes it hard for the guest to detect it because Stern’s insisting the whole time that they’re absolutely right or he's like pretending it's no big deal if they admit the embarrassing thing he wants them to admit. I notice one of his big things is getting his guest, nearly always someone who’s rich and famous, to talk about the luxuries they enjoy. He loves to get rich people to talk about being rich, because they don't like to talk about it. Louis C.K., for example, was on last month, and Stern asked him about his yacht. And Louis said something like, “Well, yeah, I have a boat,” trying to downplay it because “yacht” sounds very fancy and patrician and not at all suited to the schlubby Louis C.K. persona. But Stern insisted: “yacht.” And so Louie grumbled, “Yeah, yeah, it’s a yacht.” Stern seems to me to be pretty cynical. He has an almost Dr. House-like skepticism about pure motives, seeing vanity and pretension everywhere. For example, from the same interview with Louis C.K., Stern talks with Louis about how his show (C.K.'s) is really low-budget and about how they don’t have any trailers for the actors, that he personally gets dressed in his car. Stern asks him, essentially, like, isn’t this all bullshit? You guys have money now. The show’s a success. You could easily get trailers. Why not? Which of course Louis doesn’t have a great answer to. But again with the money stuff. I notice he’s always asking guests, “How much money did you make on that?” or “How much are you worth now?” Maybe someone knows: does he do this with guests who do flaunt their wealth or only with the ones who don’t? Maybe he only does it with comedians and other sorts of celebrities who rely on a regular-guyness or underdog thing to be effective. In any case, he frequently accentuates the class difference between his guests and his audience. Maybe this is all obvious. Maybe you’re thinking, “Well, yeah, that’s what Stern does. He ridicules people. It’s a comedy show.” But Stern’s obsession with money and class and the way he gets the interviewee to feel very comfortable while making him or her an object of ridicule seems very subtle and weird, and I just wanted to know if anyone saw it the same way.

Meh, it's more like he loves making people talk about whatever they don't want to talk about (he is an emotional sadist; as you noted, he loves making guests squirm), and How Much you Make is an easy go to. In addition to hollywood stars pretending to be in touch with the little people (Angelena Jolie doesn't have ANY help! wink wink), personal finances is one of those topics where traditionally it isn't polite to talk about in public.

These days, Howard really struggles to comprehend someones motivation beyond how much money they can make out of their particular endeavor. He can barely relate when someone like Louis CK comes on and talks about the financial stability or success they might forgo in order to realize their creative vision. Howard is a certified old fart.

Yeah, I've always assumed he watched but pretended not to have watched any of the mega-ubiquitous shows like Seinfeld/Simpsons etc because then he could feign ignorance if, by accident, any joke or bit he did seemed familiar. I'm not suggesting he stole bits or did anything weird, just that this gave him a "I don't even watch Simpsons!" out if he happened to hit a similar vein of comedy. Of course, it's equally likely that he's absolutely exhausted by creating so much comedy every day for 30 years that watching other comedy is like work to him. I know I almost never participate in the (free to me) products my company creates, because by working at putting it together it has become 'job' to me, even if the product we put out is something that is very objectively interesting to almost everyone.

I've never listened to the show, but it seems Anthony (of Opie & Anthony) has been fired: http://gawker.com/siriusxm-fired-anthony-cumia-last-night-1600246282 Tim Sabean was working on their show until recently, too. I don't know if he quit or was fired.
