Ah. Thought you were talking about the article.

The funniest thing about it is that he's fixating on the male inmates that were in the show for 15 minutes. The female inmates on the show seemed pretty stereotypical for the first couple of episodes until they started fleshing them out over the next 2 seasons. The whole premise of the show is that it's about a women's prison. Does he think the show should just just go back and give those random guys in the first episode on SSN 2 a backstory just for the sake of fairness or something?

:10bux: says he's already lovingly crafted pornstache's backstory.

EDIT: Dude should just sit and watch Lockdown for a while if he wants the kind of realism he's nosing around for (which doesn't count for much).

Pretty much.

I'm not even bothered for political reasons. It's just such an absurd request. "You know how this series takes place 95% inside a women's prison, and all but a small handful of characters are female prisoners or the overseeing staff?

Well, I think they should introduce male prisoners in a different facility with a totally different cast, that cannot logically overlap with anything happening in the current show at all. An extended B-plot that has no organic relationship to any of the established characters or stories sounds great, and wouldn't totally kill momentum in any way."

Just...come on, man. At least argue, "we need a new series like OitNB for men." Or, "OitNB should follow Mendez to men's prison, too." There are ways to frame this (still mostly terrible) argument that aren't...this garbage. This rotting garbage.

Ugh, this sounds like the worst poo poo ever, but as much as I like this show, the loving writers are too "on the nose" with their social commentary.

I really enjoyed Season 2. Sometimes I'll hear a line or two that reminds me of some of the dialogue in Weeds (ugh) but those are few and far between.

Anyway my favorite moment was when Pennsatucky found out about the feminist lesbian agenda and decided she wanted in as long as she didn't have to do anything gay.

Add me to the list of the Daya/Bennett haters. And Nichols is my favorite character.

But my fear for season three:

I'm afraid they'll just return things to status quo. The last episode showed Caputo loving up, so they'll bring back Fig as the assistant warden, and bump Caputo back down to his position

Never cross an introvert.
So I decided to take this show on with free summer time, and I just finished Season 2 today.

My overall thoughts are that, while the show rarely ends on a cliffhanger, it's so addictive.
Also:
1. Larry is dead weight. Polly is okay except now they're equated.
2. Daya was mildly entertaining when feuding with her mom, but Daya/Beckett is also pretty unbearable whenever they're onscreen.
3. I can't believe I like Pennsatucky now.
4. I liked the look into the lives of the COs and admins this season.

Now I'm just waiting for the show to implode Weeds-style.

Caputois going to stay as the assistant warden, I don't think there's any way to bring Fig back. The idea was that he kept crowing about wanting to improve the prison and be a more honest assistant warden. Then the moment he gets his wish he realizes what a pile of poo poo that job is and just becomes Fig 2.0, minus the embezzling.

I don't know why everyone says this. Caputo isn't "Fig 2.0" by any stretch. The fact he isn't infallible doesn't mean he's actively corrupt. He genuinely cares about making the prison run well, and actually cares about the prisoners. The fact he's blindsided by Bennett telling him the truth about Daya is a totally normal response: "Goddammit, man, this is my second day."

By contrast, Fig resented her position, and intentionally mismanaged it to embezzle funds for her husband's campaign. The embezzlement happened because she didn't care about the quality of life for prisoners. Caputo being flustered by extreme circumstance is not the same.

I thought for sure that it was going to be the Jason Biggs father that put Piper into prison in the first place. I like the show, but the only thing that bothers me is that the show just kinda meanders without an overarching plot.

Being blindsided is rational response. Sweeping it under the rug is not, and is a tiny step in the direction of where Fig ended up.

What I'm saying is that we saw Fig at the end of her tenure, where slashing the budget and in general removing herself emotionally from the prisoners she has to care for was just an everyday thing for her. Caputo isn't Fig 2.0 yet, but he probably will become something like her. I'd be willing to bet she approached the job the same way he did when she started. The idea being that the upper levels of prison management are designed to not really care about the prisoners they look after, as it would get in the way of their own job advancement to do so.

I can see how one may think that it was still meandering, because she sort of shot herself in the foot with her machinations. No one person was really responsible for what happened to her.

First touch: Life.
Second touch: Dead again. Forever.
Caputo was still on probation, and given all the poo poo that went down during the finale during his watch, having Bennett come clean would've probably ended his trial period by the warden, if it hasn't already.

Fig only gave the image she cared about the quality of life of the prisoners. Caputo actually seems like he has good intentions but at the same time probably knows he can't play everything by the book anymore if he wants to keep his job and do what he set out to do.

Do you believe in heroes?
My main concern came from the episode where Red got slocked. After nearly choking Vee to death Red slumps back and has a realization that she almost killed someone so she could sell petty stuff to inmates... Except the whole goddamn reason Red got to the point of killing Vee is because she was explicitly smuggling in heroin, putting the entire prison (and Nicky specifically) at risk. It seemed like an odd moment for Red to forget her principles.

Red has always punished people indirectly. Either by not allowing them to eat, cutting them out of the group, or getting them to get fired/arrested. Physically assaulting someone and killing them with her bare hands was not something she was used to.

I recently started on this show after having it recommended to me, but gave up after about 6 episodes. It began to get really hokey, and character arcs seemed really contrived. Does it improve by any chance, maybe finding some better content in season 2?

For what it's worth, I also gave up on Weeds before the final season for similar reasons. Is there any reason to stick with it at this point?

You mean the Aussie, right?

Because Larry is the shithead fiance who ditched Piper for her married new-mother of a best friend and they are basically the only characters next to which Piper looks pretty cool by comparison.

Sure the Aussie is a bit irresponsible and stand-offish, but he's never done anything offensively heinous. Running off wasn't cool, but his wife cheating on him and leaving him and most likely giving him little to no custody of his child while expecting child support is way less cool.

Yeah, I can't speak for the Feds, but on a state level prisons have, by and large, become privatized for-profit institutions. I was reading up on this about a year ago when California prisoners were pulling a hunger strike, and a few reporters went in and learned some things.

The most striking thing for me was that, not only is American prison almost specifically designed to drive even a healthy person batshit, the care available to the truly mentally ill is astoundingly horrible. The vignette that stuck out was a bunch of men, all of whom needed counseling. What they got was a therapist in a folding chair in the middle of the hallway for group sessions once in a while while all of them remained sequestered individually in their cells.

Cells, by the way? Cinder block walls, with very very tight grates for doors.

So, yeah. Suzanne is in genpop because nobody gives shits.
