It's a way to try to prevent some of the rangers from selling out to poachers and allowing them to come in and just butcher animals. That's definitely not what she's doing though The photo of her that's going around everywhere is with a white lion... There's only one pack of wild white lions, which were reintroduced a decade ago by some crazy people (stop breeding white lions, damnit) and they're heavily watched. There's no way she'd get away with killing one, much less a male. Meaning it was a canned hunt of a captive animal at a reserve where animals are bred so they can be shot for trophies.

At least the upside is that it does actually do some good, but there's something off-putting about seeing someone so proud of doing it. It's like paying money to be in a boxing match where your opponent will make you look as a great as possible before hitting the ground and then proudly posing as the winner.

Bears are only really carnivorous in the autumn, so I'm not sure they really count as predator meat. They're delicious, though.

Between the warfare, people moving into once pristine national parks and setting up villages, and poaching, the wildlife is in rough shape. The rangers cull the ones they must every year, trading the meat to the groups that support the parks. Scheduled hunts like this one provide much needed cash to the parks. This girl killing a couple of animals isn't doing any harm, unlike the damage the poachers and often their own governments do. Poachers go after certain animals, basically those which will provide wealthy Asians with the ingredients for aphrodisiacs. The number of animals they slaughter is staggering. Black rhinos are probably extinct in the wild, and the other rhinos aren't far behind. Powdered rhino horn is mixed into drinks in Vietnam as proof of wealth.

Funny thing is we could end the rhino horn industry by setting up farms to regularly harvest the horn nonfatally. Unfortunately that would require a lot more stability than a lot of regions with rhinos have.

I suspect it's the usual 'cute white girl does something vaguely charitable and gets tons of press after' thing. None of this "shooting lions for sexual thrills and ego boosts, and a marginal amount of charity" really stands up when you realise that for the price of murdering Simba she could have bought at least several sustainable farms and clean drinking water facilities. Give a man a fish etc.

This girl already has three dogs, two out of three of which are longhaired breeds living in an uncovered yard in the South Carolina heat (that they are constantly trying to escape) because she thinks deworming them or getting them pretty much any basic vet care is 'too expensive'- read, cuts into her being able to shop at Whole Foods instead of Kroger. She now has three dogs trailing worms out their butts and her solution is not 'get them dewormed', it's 'make them live in the yard'. She is constantly posting about wanting a new pet. Stop adopting the things.

Do you live near her? Because I would call your local humane society or whoever is responsible for checking up on the welfare of animals. Dogs wandering around with parasites hanging out of their asses is just disgusting and cruel. And like you said, if she can't afford to take them to the vet for even basic care, she shouldn't have them.

She now has three dogs trailing worms out their butts and her solution is not 'get them dewormed', it's 'make them live in the yard'. She is constantly posting about wanting a new pet. You know, she can get most treatments for worms over the counter now. Sure, her dogs are probably all loaded with heartworm for which she does need a prescription to get prevention for (she has to pay for the blood tests), but all of the rest are treatable with over the counter treatments. She just needs to make sure she gets one of the flea/tick treatments that the vet has, although she doesn't have to buy them directly from the vet (even though it tends to be cheaper) since they actually work and are fda approved unlike sergeant's and hartz's poo poo. Since they are hanging out of their butts, the worms are probably tape worms which the dogs got from swallowing fleas. A quick search for praziquantel yielded this and this. And I have this (for round and hook worms) to worm my stray cats, which is the same thing we had at the vet clinic I worked at. Unfortunately, I can't remember how calculate the dose for dogs.
