Now the wild world is lost, in a desert of smoke and straight lines.
Read what amounts to the first ten minutes or so of each script. No real surprises where the Doctor's characterization is concerned. Unless they start introducing something interesting towards the end of the season it looks like it's business as usual, with the Doctor's dialog, quirks and mannerisms being pretty much interchangeable with Tennant and Smith's Doctors. No hint of a "darker" Doctor or even anything vaguely harking back to Eccleston. Looks like the whole amnesia thing gets wrapped up in the first episode too.

The Moff posted:

Moffat says in the new DWM: “There would be little point in making as radical a change as we’ve made unless you’re going to go quite different with the Doctor. The last two Doctors have been brilliant, and have been your ‘good boyfriend’ Doctors. But the Doctor isn’t always like that. There is the sort of Tom Baker, Christopher Eccleston end of the spectrum, where he is mad and dangerous and difficult.”

Can't say I got any of that from what I read. Maybe it's all in the performance rather than the written page. From what I saw it was just Tennant Mk. III/Smith Mk. II. I assume the "big shake up" and "surprises" Moffat keeps going on about will emerge later in the season. Possibly. Please?

I was going to avoid any spoilers, but the two spoilers you've just posted make me think I should probably just brace myself for the worst.

How Wonderful!

I only have excellent ideas
I've skimmed the first couple scripts and they seem fun. Moffat certainly hasn't transcended all of his usual problems, but the scripts seem to evince the light, sort of elegant sly touch he has at his best, and there are some moments where Capaldi's doctor has a slightly sharper edge to him. I'm not going to read any of these all the way through because I'd still like to be surprised, but they actually have me kind of excited for the season to come around.

The intro sequence to 'Listen' looks pretty interesting. I'm not reading all of the scripts, but I can definitely see something of a more severe, thoughtful, and academic Doctor in there.

cool but crude
Read the first and the Sherwood one, few surprises, all in all disappointing if you hoped they might change directions a but. We pretty much stay with the quirky doctor that has been tiring since Tennant's second season and at least the first still has this over the top pathos without any build up that Moffat really likes to use.

Also, there are a couple of lines I just now will end up as memes, which makes it cringe worthy.

The running storyline for this season appears to be Doctor Who has a crazy female stalker who thinks he's her boyfriend. He really doesn't do himself any favours, does he?

Haha. I think most people here don't want an actual full on spoiler thread, just a thread free from the TVIV spoiler rules where you can't even discuss trailers or other news even if it's all over the front pages of the newspapers. But yes it is a bit silly.

For anyone that just wants episode titles and writers-

Deep Breath (Steven Moffat)

Into the Dalek (Phil Ford)

Robots of Sherwood (Mark Gatiss)

Listen (Steven Moffat)

Time Heist (Steve Thompson)

And I don't know who Marcelo Camargo is, but the scripts have his name stamped on them. Whoever he is he won't be in his job long now.

There are tiny tiny hints of a different type of Doctor in the first and second script. 12 flat-out tells the baddie in ep. 1 that he's going to kill him and then does. And then there's this bit in ep. 2:

THE DOCTOR:
I materialized a time capsule exactly round you and saved your life one second before your ship exploded, but do please keep crying.

JOURNEY:
My brother just died!

THE DOCTOR:
His sister didn't. You're very welcome. Put the gun down.

Yeah a lot of the dialogue is very similar to Smith's but the sharper edge seems good, and I'm sure Capaldi will play the hell out of it. Everything else in Deep Breath was the usual dogshit though

Yeah, I get the feeling Capaldi's performance is going to absolutely make or break this Doctor even more than the last couple.

While I am skeptical, Moffat apparently had people tell him how amazing it was that he managed to give his Doctor a such a distinctive voice in his first outing after the Eleventh Hour aired, but when it was just a script, a lot of people criticized it for being too much like Tennant's Doctor. maybe it's just that the last actor is obviously the freshed in your mind, so you just read it in his voice.

My voodoo dolls all for naught. I really wish a new writer would have taken over with Capaldi. He's going to be caught in these same bad episodes that Smith had to endure the final 2 years when Moffat ran out of good ideas.

Apparently he works in the BBC Miami office and actually put the Deep Breath script up on the local server.

That's pretty much a Darwin Award-worthy career suicide.

Yeah, I remember hearing this. Ten and Eleven would probably seem fairly similar written out too, but the devil is in the performances.

If nothing else, just about anything Capaldi says with that stare of his is going to sound a lot harsher.
