Obama whiping a taxpayer while directly quoting Jesus seems like a clear allusion to the taxpayer as temple moneychanger. An interesting theological concept perhaps?

I listened to a NH radio spot yesterday, about how this wasn't just our Independence Day, but our Independence Week and how we should all go to this guy's cigar shop so we could light fireworks with our stoagies and how we all need to have Roman candle fights with each other.

It then turned into a spot about DUI awareness and how we shouldn't do anything stupid this week because we're Boston strong.

Same narrator, one continuous take for the entire spot.

Crossposting from I/P thread for exposure, since it's too busy having a slapfight over equivalency for anyone to notice or care:

I'll put together a proper thread at some point, but if you want to do something at least somewhat productive to alleviate the suffering instead of just feeling terrible, UNRWA is one of the best ways to get money to people who need it in Gaza: http://www.unrwausa.org I'd encourage everyone to give even a little bit here; during Cast Lead in 2008, we collectively donated over $30k. Other options –

Charitable causes that deliver humanitarian aid:

Oxfam International - http://www.oxfam.org/

quote:

Oxfam International is a confederation of 13 like-minded organizations working together and with partners and allies around the world to bring about lasting change.

We work directly with communities and we seek to influence the powerful to ensure that poor people can improve their lives and livelihoods and have a say in decisions that affect them.

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - http://www.ifrc.org/

quote:

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is the world's largest humanitarian organization, providing assistance without discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions.

Founded in 1919, the International Federation comprises 186 member Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, a Secretariat in Geneva and more than 60 delegations strategically located to support activities around the world. There are more societies in formation. The Red Crescent is used in place of the Red Cross in many Islamic countries.

The Federation's vision: We strive, through voluntary action, for a world of empowered communities, better able to address human suffering and crises with hope, respect for dignity and a concern for equity.

Our mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity. Vulnerable people are those who are at greatest risk from situations that threaten their survival, or their capacity to live with an acceptable level of social and economic security and human dignity. Often, these are victims of natural disasters, poverty brought about by socio-economic crises, refugees, and victims of health emergencies.

Amnesty Interational - http://www.amnesty.org/

quote:

Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights for all.

Our supporters are outraged by human rights abuses but inspired by hope for a better world - so we work to improve human rights through campaigning and international solidarity.

We have more than 2.2 million members and subscribers in more than 150 countries and regions and we coordinate this support to act for justice on a wide range of issues.

Medical Aid for Palestinians - http://www.map-uk.org/

quote:

Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) is a British charity that operates in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Lebanon. We deliver health and medical care to vulnerable Palestinians and strive to establish a permanent medical infrastructure in Palestinian communities by training health care practitioners, teaching medical vocational skills and addressing the requirements of particularly vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities.

MAP offers practical medical support to Palestinians, and other victims of conflict and displacement, by working with local non-governmental organisations and the Palestinian Health Service on the following priority areas:

-Providing health care in isolated rural communities of the West Bank;

-Improving child nutrition in Gaza;

-Contributing to psycho-social support efforts for women and children affected by the conflict;

-Assist people with congenital disabilities and disabilities due to injury.

**If you donate to MAP, be sure to tick the giftaid it box which allows them to add 28p to every £1 you donate with no extra cost to yourself. (Great Britain citizens only)**

UNRWA - http://www.un.org/unrwa/

quote:

Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict, UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, was established by United Nations General Assembly resolution 302 (IV) of 8 December 1949 to carry out direct relief and works programmes for Palestine refugees. The Agency began operations on 1 May 1950. In the absence of a solution to the Palestine refugee problem, the General Assembly has repeatedly renewed UNRWA's mandate, most recently extending it until 30 June 2011.

Since its establishment, the Agency has delivered its services in times of relative calm in the Middle East, and in times of hostilities. It has fed, housed and clothed tens of thousands of fleeing refugees and at the same time educated and given health care to hundreds of thousands of young refugees.

UNRWA is unique in terms of its long-standing commitment to one group of refugees and its contributions to the welfare and human development of four generations of Palestine refugees. Originally envisaged as a temporary organization, the Agency has gradually adjusted its programmes to meet the changing needs of the refugees. Today, UNRWA is the main provider of basic services - education, health, relief and social services - to over 4.6 million registered Palestine refugees in the Middle East.

In fiscal year 2008, ANERA delivered more than $50 million worth of donated medicine and medical supplies into Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon.

With offices in the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon and Jordan, ANERA employs more than 60 full-time staff who are locally hired and work with local partners.

ANERA helps local institutions become more self-sufficient and effective in serving their communities. Every project is planned in consultation with the communities that ultimately benefit — an approach that ensures relevancy and commitment, and secures the long-term viability of the projects.

This institution ensures that Israel's healthcare providers have enough blood to save lives: MDA provides 100% of the blood requirements of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and 95% of the blood needs of Israeli hospitals and the general population.
* In the past five years, AFMDA raised over $90 million to purchase medical supplies and ambulance for MDA in Israel.
* AFMDA provided 110 ambulances to MDA Israel in 2004, of which 49 were specially equipped MICU's (Mobile Intensive Care Units).
* In 2003, AFMDA sent 99 ambulances to MDA Israel, including 22 MICU's and 7 Blood Mobiles.
* Thanks to AFMDA supporters, 700 MDA ambulances travel over 5.25 million miles a year taking care of more than 325,000 patients anually.
* MDA answers calls for all types of accidents, medical emergencies and terror attacks.
* MDA has over 100 Emergency Medical Stations and 11 dispatch stations in communities throughout Iarael. Many of these have been built or upgraded by American Friends of Magen David Adom.

Non-Profit Human Rights/Educational Groups:

Electronic Intifada - http://electronicintifada.net/

quote:

The Electronic Intifada (EI) is a not-for-profit, independent publication committed to comprehensive public education on the question of Palestine, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the economic, political, legal, and human dimensions of Israel's 40-year occupation of Palestinian territories. EI provides a needed supplement to mainstream commercial media representations of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Launched 23 February 2001 at electronicIntifada.net as a pioneering online resource for media analysis, criticism, and activism, EI has progressively expanded its scope into new arenas: reference materials, live reporting, editorials, arts coverage, and satire, with the aim of presenting an accessible, credible, and responsible Palestinian narrative of developments on the ground to the American public and international community.

Although EI addresses the prevailing pro-Israeli slant in US media coverage by offering information from a Palestinian perspective, our views on the conflict are based firmly on universal principles of international law and human rights conventions, and our reporting is built on a solid foundation of documented evidence and careful fact-checking.

The Israeli Information Center For Human Rights In The Occupied Territories - http://www.btselem.org/English/

quote:

The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories was established in 1989 by a group of prominent academics, attorneys, journalists, and Knesset members. It endeavors to document and educate the Israeli public and policymakers about human rights violations in the Occupied Territories, combat the phenomenon of denial prevalent among the Israeli public, and help create a human rights culture in Israel.

B'Tselem in Hebrew literally means "in the image of," and is also used as a synonym for human dignity. The word is taken from Genesis 1:27 "And God created humans in his image. In the image of God did He create him." It is in this spirit that the first article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that "All human beings are born equal in dignity and rights."

As an Israeli human rights organization, B'Tselem acts primarily to change Israeli policy in the Occupied Territories and ensure that its government, which rules the Occupied Territories, protects the human rights of residents there and complies with its obligations under international law.

B'Tselem is independent and is funded by contributions from foundations in Europe and North America that support human rights activity worldwide, and by private individuals in Israel and abroad.

B'Tselem has attained a prominent place among human rights organizations. In December, 1989 it received the Carter-Menil Award for Human Rights. Its reports have gained B'Tselem a reputation for accuracy, and the Israeli authorities relate to them seriously. B'Tselem ensures the reliability of information it publishes by conducting its own fieldwork and research, the results of which are thoroughly cross-checked with relevant documents, official government sources, and information from other sources, among them Israeli, Palestinian, and other human rights organizations.

Ma'an News Agency - http://www.maannews.net

Ma'an News Agency (MNA) (Arabic: وكالة معا الإخبارية‎) is a large wire service created in 2005 in the Palestinian territories. It is part of the Ma'an Network, a non-governmental organization media network created in 2002[1] in the Palestinian territories among independent journalists throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip. It has partnerships with eight local television stations and twelve local radio stations. Ma'an News Agency publishes news 24 hours a day in Arabic, Hebrew and English, and claims to be one of the largest wire services in the Palestinian territories, with over three million visits per month. Ma'an News Agency also publishes feature stories, analysis and opinion articles. The agency's headquarters is in Bethlehem and it has an office in Gaza.

The Free Gaza Movement - http://www.freegaza.org

quote:

We are a human rights group that, since August 2008, has sailed ten times to Gaza to break Israel's illegal stranglehold on1.6 million Palestinian civilians. We entered Gaza successfully five times in 2008; however, we have been violently intercepted on four voyages, including Israel's MAY 31, 2010 lethal attack on our Freedom Flotilla when nine of our colleagues were killed and many more injured by Israeli commandos. On the tenth voyage in July 2011, Greece prevented us from leaving, as Israel and the U.S. outsourced Israel's occupation of Gaza to Greece. (See also https://www.witnessgaza.com)

We sail as an expression of citizen nonviolent, direct action, confronting Israel's ongoing abuses of Palestinian human and political rights and will continue to challenge Israel's illegal siege on Gaza by participating and supporting other initiatives to break the blockade of Gaza by sea.
