What was it beforehand? A 2-year tour? I actually heard Iraq and Afghanistan were pretty popular because of the equity and hardship/danger pay. But I haven't heard much about people volunteering for Yemen.

That's because the majority of people that go realize it's extremely difficult to complete a two year tour (and curtail).

The service recognition package came out recently that spells it out. More bidders will come out for it, which is good. 2 months was enough for me though.

Has anyone else heard back from Pearson about results or any issues they might've had? It's been two and a half weeks since the power outage testing incident. Considering that the initial response estimate was '3-5 business days' and the two times I've checked in since then I've gotten 'oh well it was just an estimate, but it looks like they've changed the status of your case' and 'I've passed your case on to the superiors so it's dealt with ASAP' and they've sent nothing to me, I'm both still anxious and incredibly frustrated with how Pearson's handled things so far.

Would it be best to just assume that a judgement on the case will come out when all the regular results are also sent out?

I'd stay on them. Give them 3-5 days between check-ins, perhaps asking for expected timelines and then checking back in after that has elapsed. You don't want to be annoying but don't let yourself get dropped through the cracks. It's a good skill to cultivate for eventually working here too.

Today they said to call back after the results of the multiple-choice section are sent back, and that those will be sent out on Thursday. I don't recall the essay and multiple choice sections being graded and results send separately last year, but that's what the Pearson fellow said this time around.

A few. Sadly not many in my bureau of choice.

I was initially pretty disappointed. The list is pretty concentrated - not a ton of diversity and lots of redundancy. That said, we're adventurous and naive enough to love anywhere.

Only the people I judged could take the advice. Everyone who was bright eyed and optimistic about I'M A PD OFFICER!!!, I told them it would be hard but worth considering. The woman in your class who had spent a ton of time in already as a specialist? Yeah she got the straight-up truth.

why did this happen
Doing the student internship at the embassy here has been bar none the best internship I've ever done and has already been immensely rewarding (and I'm not quite halfway through yet). The people are (with only a few exceptions) awesome, helpful, and seriously knowledgeable about their fields, it's a great environment to work in. I had already decided FSO life isn't for me because I want to raise my family in the states, but I really enjoy the Foreign Service and if the people at this post are representative of the types in most other embassies I really look forward to continuing to work with them if I end up with State in another capacity.

Not trying to be all weird and flattering, but you guys are pretty drat cool.

thank you much for that. And yes you're pretty spot on about Manila. Generally a cool lot except for a few (and boy, do those few make it up in volumes). I think its a requirement to be seriously knowledgable about your fields, helpful, and possibly awesome.

50/50 on the work environment, though.
