Well I ended up going with the 13" 256GB/8GB Pro anyway, ought to have more oomph than the basic Air. Somehow I always thought that using OSX would be fairly similar to some Linux desktop environments, but holy poo poo am I lost in this environment.

My one year of warranty is almost up on my MacBook Air, is there any good reason I shouldn't buy Apple Care from eBay for a discount price? I've seen it on there for ~$180 whereas it's $250 from Apple.

If it's been purchased from a non Authorised reseller, they can and do invalidate it. Often B&H Photo is the recommended place to check for cheap, legit Apple Care.

If you need it now/before school starts, buy it now/before school starts. If you think you can wait until Broadwell ships (estimates peg it "by the holiday season" and the overwhelming consensus is that it'll happen after the back-to-school period ends, so think September-November at the earliest) then I'd probably do that. Broadwell's supposedly going to push Haswell's energy/performance ratio another 40% which is definitely nothing to sneeze at but we won't really know anything about what the 2014 crop of Macs will or won't be until their press conference is actually held. This isn't like when Thunderbolt or retina displays were added and there was several months'-worth of supply chain info and leaks to give the rumor mill a solid "dollars-to-donuts" guess about new specs and features.

If you need it now, no. If it's more of a want than a need then maybe, but once again it depends on what exactly you'll be using it for. The last time I heard I believe that the variable size L4 EDRAM was making its way to the entire mobile lineup with Broadwell which should yield a decent performance increase for both CPU compute and GPU usage situations. But every generation shows performance improvements so it all falls back on if you need it now go for it (you'll very much enjoy it) but if you having something more than functional now than it's up to you.

AASPs are like the hidden gem of AppleCare purchases. They get it cheap so they'll almost always cut you a deal, and it's registered automatically/immediately with Apple so you can even buy it on the last day of your year grace period.

The first time I restarted mine, I thought I had accidentally clicked log out instead. I restarted, turned around to do something for a sec and I turned back around to the login screen. SSDs are amazing.

I absolutely hated OSX for a long time. Once I really spent time bootstrapping and setting up my environment with stuff like YADR ( https://github.com/skwp/dotfiles ) it's been hard to use anything else. Get rid of Finder ASAP, though. That thing is a pile of poo poo and an embarrassment to any file explorer. I bought pathfinder awhile back for like $8 on some bundle sale.

Have a 2008 Mac Pro, I THINK my main hard drive is failing (using all 4 slots right now, with one drive being a Time Machine drive that backs up the other 3). Is this a good plan of action? -Clone my start up drive to a 500GB External Lacie Rugged FW800 drive that I have. Use this as a boot drive, see if I am still having issues. -If the computer runs fine with another drive as the start up drive, ditch the current start up drive and replace it with a 500GB SSD What is the best way of installing a SSD in my Mac Pro? I was considering just getting one of those $20 Icy Dock enclosure things. And is there anything special I need to do to get a SSD running as my primary start up drive? I am so used to SATA drives where I just plug it in and format. And then finally, if I do swap out the hard drive, is there any harm in booting with the external, upgrading the OS to Mavericks (currently on Snow Lion), and giving that a try to see if there is any problems? And if it is not running well, just change the boot drive back to the internal one?

I currently have an 11in 2012 Air (128GB, 4GB) and while I love the thing, it's getting to the point where I need more screen real estate, more storage and more RAM. I work in finance and need to be able to do some good ol spreadsheetin' while away from work. I currently am running a VM with Excel, which is less than optimal but I simply don't have enough storage to have a bootcamp partition, which would make better use of my limited RAM. In a perfect world, I'd be able to run essentially 3 "desktops": 1 mac desktop with my personal stuff on it (I prefer OSX for non-work stuff), 1 remote desktop into my work computer (to retrieve files as needed), and 1 VM running windows where I can actually do excel, outlook, etc. Alternatively, I'd just bootcamp into windows and run the RDP and all my office stuff on that. I think a 256GB SSD should be enough for that. So that brings me to which laptop to buy. I still have an edu email so I could use the education discount and get the $100 gift card (which is as good as cash to me because I'll probably buy $100 in accessories either way). A Windows 8 VM with Excel 2013 handles the retina screen perfectly and looks beautiful (the only downside being that you have to use Excel 2013 I do exactly this and it works perfectly on my 13" rMBP. I don't game, though, so I can't speak to that. OSX window management and multiple desktops is so much better than anything in Windows. It's worth the extra cost for that feature alone.

On my Air it's laggy with low settings, which makes me not want to play it due to the lag. I'd be OK with no lag on low settings, but if the "Iris Pro" graphics in the 15in are really that much better than the regular "Iris" graphics in the 13in, I might be convinced (along with the other factors like the screen size).

Civ 5 doesn't have any power-saving features, FPS limiting, or the like. Normally you can frame limit games at 60-100 fps to save power (heat, battery), but Civ 5 lacks this feature.

I have a late 2011 15" MacBook Pro that is starting to be ridiculously slow. Basically ever since I installed Mavericks on it, it takes about 90 seconds (or more) for it to go to sleep whenever I close the lid. Launching Chrome takes about a minute or more to launch, and I can't do anything else with it if I have Photoshop open. All that being said, I have the default 4GB of RAM installed in it and an aging WD 5400RPM 500GB hard drive from 2010 that I had installed in my previous 13" Macbook Pro. I am going to add more RAM but was wondering if this is one of the ones that could use up to 16GB? I am also wondering if I should replace the hard drive or just reinstall the OS? The drive doesn't seem to have any errors. Also I installed Mavericks through the App store, not a clean install.

Apple says that machine will only handle 8GB of PC10600 RAM, but it will actually handle up to 16GB of PC12800 RAM. I would download SMART Utility and check to see if the drive is failing before reinstalling the OS.

I'd do a fresh re-install if you can't figure out what programs are conflicting. I'd throw an SSD and 8GB in there for good measure

Someone mentioned combining deals at Best Buy to get super cheap macbooks. Looking to possibly get a 13" Air, but the build I'm making on B&H is still cheaper and I don't even think Best Buy will have the build that I want. Is there another discount that Best Buy can offer that I'm not seeing other than the current sale for macs?

I just chalked it up to low RAM and Mavericks. edit: I also reset the PRAM just to see if that did anything, and that lowered the sleep time a little bit but it went back to taking forever after a week. I've had my Macbook Air for a little over a week now, and when I was checking to see if my AppleCare went through properly I noticed that my Mid-2014 Air is having a bit of an identity crisis What's going on here? I bought it straight from Apple, it's BTO if that makes any difference. This doesn't bother me as such, it's just that if it's going to be like that forever it kind of hurts any potential resale value. Sorry if this doesn't belong in the hardware thread, it seemed like the best place for it.
