Thump! posted:Don't people occasionally die eating squid because of the muscles doing that poo poo in their throat and them choking or something? I've never heard of this. Typically if you eat a squid you're not swallowing the tentacles whole, you're eating chunks of them. If the tentacles are big enough to clog your throat you're not dieing because you ate squid, you're dieing because you don't know how to chew your food properly.

It happens in Korea where they cut up live octopuses (not squid) and eat them while they are still writhing around. The suckers on the tentacles could easily choke you by sticking in your throat.

I love squid but I just don't get the appeal of eating it live

Actor Choi Min-sik, a Buddhist, said a prayer for each one. The eating of live octopuses (called sannakji (산낙지) in Korean) as a delicacy exists in East Asia, although it is usually cut, not eaten whole. When asked in DVD commentary if he felt sorry for the actor Choi Min-sik, director Park Chan-wook stated he felt more sorry for the octopus.

In general, the suckers on the arms and tentacles of squid are much smaller. Chard posted:
Neither can I. I enjoy both octopus and squid, but they are EXTREMELY chewy. Even when cooked, it can take quite some time to chew through a large chunk. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to eat one live.

Ghostlight posted:It's the salt. The sodium ions react electrically with the muscle tissue, triggering the same chemical reactions as signals from the brain that direct the muscles to start using their chemical reserves of fuel to move. So then are salted cephalopods less nutritious than the halo-free variety?

According to my friend who was stationed in Korea and his Korean mother, it's a common belief that eating seafood as raw as possible is better than eating it cooked because there are more nutrients. It's really popular with martial artists in S. Korea because eating a live octopus is seen as a rite of passage since you "fight" to put your food into your stomach. Also, Old Boy is my guilty pleasure movie. "Can fifteen years of imaginary training really be put to use?"

Why would you eat an octopus as long as you have money for literally anything else? And after that you can still eat your clothes, I'm sure cotton will go down easier than that loving abomination. e: After watching the cactus video, I decided to see youtube for "meth is a hell of a drug" for some reason. These GIFs are from a Genesis Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 hack called "Ultimate Mortal Kombat Trilogy" with characters from every Genesis MK game and some other extras. One of the cheats allows both players to do fatalities when the prompt comes up. Turn it on, watch one of the fatality demonstrations, and, well... The funniest thing is hearing the "Friendship" music happen when someone does a friendship and then gets hit by the other player doing a fatality at the same time.
