It seems like it lags no matter what when I go to a dark tower, even if I go there in year 5. I guess I won't be getting the slab any time soon.

I had a very helpful assistant while experimenting with necks: an unnamed elf who kept coming back to life when I took a nap. You can behead people by aiming a slashing attack at their neck. If successful, you should find a matching neck lying on the ground. Butchering the neck creates all of the usual head gibs, including upper spine nervous tissue. Did that used to happen?

My dude decided to hang out in a bar and start an insurrection with a drunk goblin for some reason. This is actually really cool and interesting. I think some years back Toady mentioned entities technically being able to have more than one "soul" at some point in the future when he'd worked on the personality etc. systems more, and this sounds like pretty much exactly that. Of course, this is a bug and not intended to happen, but just imagine all the cool stuff you could do with this if actually properly implemented. Dorfs with dissociative identity disorders! I wish I had taken a screenshot before my game crashed, but I had a dwarf that 'hated idleness, fun and enjoyment' as one of my first 7. He ended up not having much to do while the crops grew and he started brawling with the other farmer that he was hanging out with that loved drinking and they ended up killing eachother. When I looked at the aftermath, he had literally vomited in rage at the fact that his farmer friend had nothing to do and the dinning room was covered in his vomit.

Brains are like meat in that they're measured in handfuls instead of distinct amounts of organs. Ettins have big heads.

14 brains = 14 weight units of brains, not 14 brains. (In case of eyes, there are 4 individual eyes for the 2 heads, so it can't go below 4 units, but they're below maximum unit weight)

Tiler Kiwi posted:- I cut off a zombie's head and he responded by stabbing my leg, chipping a bone through my bronze greaves, before stabbing my head and killing me when I passed out immediately. Zombies are kind of assholes, and don't give a gently caress about being blind I guess. Zombies are ridiculously durable now. They're a lot like how sponges used to be in that they don't have a centralized area to remove to take them out. Seems like heavy blunt weapons would be good for them now. I learned this the hard way when I decapitated a bunch of them. To which they replied by having one tackle my character and the rest literally encircled my character and kicked him when he was down like some sort of street side beating. At this point I just try and delimb them, followed by a decapitation. That keeps them from doing any serious damage until I can put them down. my dad posted:Did... Did Toady just create Dead Space in DF? Dwarf Space? Masterwork beat him to it. There's an easter egg feature in there. It's possible to dig up a marker. All hell breaks loose if a dwarf does that. Think the prequel and duration of Dead Space 1 if you want an image of what the marker simulates happening to your fort. Oh, and every corpse starts to mutate, creating a necromorph of the "bladed arm" type. And they can eventually infect more of them. It was a hilarious "what the gently caress?" moment when I realized I had found it. Followed by me pulling a face as I looked at a corpse and saw it was changing, and that it wasn't a joke. Getting rid of that thing was an epic quest. On the plus side, if world gen was active in that version during play I just cage trapped a bunch of necromorphs and exported the infestation to other cities! Or taught humanity how to tame them. Lord Windy posted:Is that only in Masterworks or is that in the base game as well? Because I think that would be interesting to see. Only in Masterwork. Most people will never find it given what it takes to trigger the event. But it's pretty hilarious when it does happen. Especially if you were unaware that a certain job has potential side effects to its use. If you want to be spoiled on what causes it: The archaeologist can take special items like fossils, old chests, etc, etc that are dug up during mining and investigate them for rewards. Sometimes it's a lovely but somewhat useful reward, like discovering the old fossil is nothing but a ton of rusty steel barbed wire to fence off an area with. Sometimes it's something great. Like part of a set of mithril gear. Rarely it's something awesome, like finding a kaiju sized golem called The Guardian of Armok to defend your dwarves. Sometimes it's indescribable terror and insanity. There's like a 1 percent chance to find a red marker in a fossil from a forgotten time. This has the result of touching off a potentially apocalyptic situation depending on how many corpses you have, and where your refuse pile is. And keep in mind that this isn't the necromancer version of raising the dead. The marker will trigger a corpse that was chopped in half too, melting the flesh and remaking it as a whole and hearty necromorph as if it was never bisected. And they have sword arms to boot. And did I mention that you can't get rid of it by atom smashing? The only way to get rid of its effects are to build a temple to Armok and sacrifice a dwarf with it to burn it up in the fires of Armok's wrath. When I did that my fortress was so hosed that no dwarf got the chance to get it down there. They'd get halfway to the temple I had set up in the deep earth and get waylayed by roaming necromorphs. Eventually I was so bogged down in the dead that I had quarantined sections of my fort, leaving the survivors to die, and had let anyone (previously it had just been apostles that were instructed to do the sacrifice) grab the thing. Turns out my high priest is a hero. He grabbed the thing and was basically escorted by seven of my best military dwarfs to the temple room. This included chucking it down through two entire caverns via a garbage dump shaft for the sake of speed, to be picked up at the bottom. Whereupon he went out in a literal blaze of glory, destroying the marker and stopping more necromorphs from reviving, letting me slowly reclaim the fortress over the course of three years of hard fighting. My fortress looked like the Ishimura by the time I started to reclaim parts of it for use. As a funny side note, at one point I had the necromorphs duking it out in a three way battle with the cult of the carp god and my dwarves during the clean-up process. Apparently when one group was cut off from the main fortress they turned to worship of the carp god to survive. Which lead to them daubing fish head marks on their skin and mutating horribly the moment a necromorph broke the doors down to their sanctuary like two years later. It turns out the cult and their lovecraftian deep ones are more hardcore than the necromorphs are. They actually cleaned that place out after a brief and very bloody war, making their own little enclave in my fortress near an underground lake. Suffice to say that the place looked hilariously hosed. I considered just walling the underground portion of the fort itself off to let them all murder each other instead of trying to regain control of the underside. Here's a thing. I recently entered a competition to write about "Your beautiful game". I wrote what was basically an essay about Dwarf Fortress, despite the fact that every time I've tried to play it it's kicked me in the head. I remember watching Major Failure play it back in the Boatmurdered days and god drat if it wasn't just as confusing then as it is now. I'm trying though. Reinstalled the other night. Immediate confusion once again. Here's the mercenary part: would it be cool to post a link to the competition? My entry's been shortlisted and if I win (by getting the most votes) I win a PS4/WiiU etc. I'm getting married this year so all my money is going on that, rather than expensive toys. If anyone wanted to give me a vote, that would be really kind and I'll post the link. If not (and if this looks like the desperate plea for attention that it clearly is) I'll gladly bugger straight off/post the essay here in case anyone wants to read it (I think it's kinda sweet).

Are human fortresses reasonably playable if I were to add the '[CIV_CONTROLLABLE]'-tag to them? I've read somewhere that due to them not having any nobles, they cannot trade or have military squads. Any truth to that?

I put a naked human in the arena against a dwarf with an axe and the dwarf kept punching rather than using the axe - the fight took forever. When I gave the dwarf two axes he used one or both of them (can't tell) right away and immediately decapitated the human. What gives?

In the last 10 pages or so I can't believe that I saw like half a dozen complaints about Dwarf Therapist and how it is difficult to understand what the skill levels are because they are 'meaningless squares'. Did none of you ever check the Options menu? You can change the skill-indicator from squares to symbols to numbers. Yes, you can set it so that a Dwarf's skill is shown as an easy to read number. You can even click on a Skill column and the dwarf list will sort itself to list them in ascending or descending order of their mastery of that skill!

Jack the Lad posted:I put a naked human in the arena against a dwarf with an axe and the dwarf kept punching rather than using the axe - the fight took forever. I've wrestled with this issue before. When you get opportunity attacks (blue exclamation mark in the attack aiming menu), they're assigned to a completely random attack on a completely random bodypart. And the AI will never pass up a chance to bite someone in the eyelid if given the chance. And since the list of eligible targets is more than half made up of fingers, toes, teeth and facial features... There's something a bit fucky about the general attack choices, though. Sometimes the AI downs an opponent and then ignores the fact that it has a 100% chance to hit the head with that axe and just fruitlessly punch and kick until it runs out of bluster and collapses from the exertion.

Attacks are kinda randomized when you bump-attack (walk into an enemy) and that's how all NPCs attack. The second axe took away his free hands, so his options were basically "hit with axe" or "kick."
