He may also extend the plate on my fibula, but he won't if it's not necessary. We live a few blocks from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, so we've been going there. I'll be non-weight-bearing for 8 weeks, and then rehab! Sucks about your crash. I'm glad you got away relatively injury free like you did.

I decided to make a U-turn at a light (turning left here in freedom land) and since I've been pushing the bike a bit I decided to get as much lean as I possibly could during the turn. I started from a total stop since the light just turned green. I was going around 10 MPH (indicated, so probably closer to 7 or 8) and I'm pretty sure I was leaned over at least 30 degrees, but I'm also a dumb beginner so it could have been much less than that. I looked completely through the turn and as I'm just about turned all the way around I notice that I'm getting much closer to the ground than I intended. It happened pretty quick, so I'm not completely sure if I just let up on the throttle or cranked it too hard, but either way I ended up on my side and sliding across the lane. Adrenaline hit me and I paused for maybe an 1/8th of a second to wait for any pain to hit and when it didn't I stood the bike up and rode on. About 6 cars passed me from the time of the crash to getting the bike running again and no one stopped, which doesn't surprise me too much considering the part of town I was in. I got home safely and the damage report is minimal. I was wearing full gear and fell at a graceful fast-walk speed, so I don't even have a bruise on my shoulder. The bike is completely fine looking and since it was already a bit scratched from the PO I can't tell if there is a single new scratch from me, thank Japan for cheap beater dual sports. As for my gear the only damage is some scratches on the shoulder puck of my Dainese jacket, the leather is completely fine except for a bit of dirt showing up on what was my pristine white sleeve. The pants were Icon Overlord leather/mesh and they just have a bit of dirt on the white leg. I will post pictures if anyone cares, but there really isn't anything to look at. I'm not quite sure what I did wrong besides being a new rider who pushed himself a bit harder than he should have after being off his motorcycle for over a month. A part of me wants to blame my tires, which are the old knobbies from the PO that I still need to change to slicks, but I'm sure that is just me trying to deflect blame from my own mistakes. I did already start riding again this morning and the bike feels just fine. I'm still a bit paranoid about leaning through turns at the moment and I have to keep forcing myself to stay loose and keep a steady throttle through the turn, but as I start pushing myself again I'm getting a bit more comfortable. Right now I'm really just bothered that I'll never be able to dickwave over the fact that I haven't crashed yet, I was really looking forward to whipping that one out. If you say 30 degrees it might have been more like 20 4) don't be discouraged, everyone has dropped their bike in some slow dumb situation like that. It happens.

Glad you're ok and theres minimal damage! That part really bothers me. Even if it was low speed spill, not one person can even roll up and bring the window down and ask if you're ok? I've been lucky to have people stop for me on both of my crashes. On my first one a guy stopped to help get the bike out of the ditch with a friend, and another stopped and then went to get his truck to haul my bike (and my busted rear end) home, like 20 miles. He did it free of charge and I didn't even get to thank him. I hope I run into that dude again. Multiple people stopping to offer help/water/food and some guy offered to ride the bike home for me lol. Also had a off duty EMT stop and look me over. Second crash I had both cars present stop to help me, and a third, with another EMT, stop and check out my neck to see if I was ok. I'm EXTREMELY thankful to have had people stop both times, and would still be even if I fell over doing a u-ie. I would always stop if I saw a biker crashed

Well, two nights ago I totaled (I hope) the SV. As I was riding home on the highway, keeping up with traffic at maybe 70+ish, a huge chunk of truck tire got flung up under my front wheel, messing up my cruising mojo. I was focused completely at that moment on my front headlight's pool of daylight, and I didn't see ANYTHING. For this reason, I think another car ran over it and flung it up under somehow. All I know is one minute I'm quietly cruising home, and then it feels like I just hit a 2ft high cement wall at highway speeds. Huge boom, bike lifts into the air angled forwards for a moment, then comes back down hard. From there, it went into an immediate and extreme death wobble. It was really really harsh and got exponentially worse over the next two seconds before the bike dumped. I went down at 70+, though I didn't look at the speedo directly after it happened because I was distracted. I never blacked out or anything, so I remember all of it. I was toppling for quite a while, and my sharpest memory is of hearing the bike topple and skitter just behind me. I truly expected it to come down on me at any second. It missed me, and slid about 30 feet further than I. The car that pulled over to check on me would have run me over, if i hadn't seen them coming and moved my legs. Otherwise, once I stopped I didn't get up until well after the emt/police got there. I was in such shock that it had actually happened, and just didn't feel like getting up. Fortunately I stopped in a gore, so was safe. The people who stopped spoke with 911, in between scolding me for swearing and telling me they only stopped because they had read some scripture or some poo poo. Right after I stopped, while I refused to move, I did use the adrenaline to check all of my joints and take stock of what hurt and what didn't. I'm glad I did, because after the swelling started I couldn't move many things. After turning down an ambulance,I had a friend take me to the ER, then spent a regretful 11 hours getting slowly processed through. I kept trying to just leave and they kept convincing me that it would only be a little longer. My gear is trashed. Even the really robust dianese shoes are toast. My a* jacket is still in decent shape, which speaks volumes to build quality. Everywhere that jacket covered, I took next to no damage. The forearm took a huge hit, right where the armor was, and I'm not even sore there. Fortunately, I picked up a new pair of gauntlet armored summer gloves this past sunday. My prior gloves were built, and wouldn't have done anything for me. The sedici pants shredded on my lower legs on both sides there towards the end of the tumble. So the upshot is the bones in my foot and left hand were all taken just under the "all of the bones are pulverized" threshold, but not broken. I have massive swelling and discoloration on the whole hand/foot/joints. Heavy and deep bone and tissue bruising pretty much everywhere. My right clavicle is broken. My lower legs have huge road rash on the outer back of them. This is perhaps the most painful part. My whole body is made of pain, though. That said, the doctors couldn't believe how unharmed I was. They gave me some really good pain meds and instruction to rest and ice things. All while being puzzled and looking at the xrays again. ATGATT, BITCH. But yeah I'd be dead without my helmet and full gear.

Clavicle will heal up fine, and gets much easier after the first week or two when you don't have to sit up to sleep. Lots of people say it's among the more painful injuries to get since it can't be casted... If the road rash is worse than let that be a lesson to bros rocking Levi's. Heal up fast man.

Thanks for your well wishes and concern. I really appreciate it. I know I read somewhere here on what you could do to lessen or stop a wobble, but this was so extreme I completely forgot. Since I was just riding along like normal, then a huge boom and bucking bronco, I was surprised and ineffective at reacting on more than instinct. Until I was tumbling for a bit, I couldn't grasp that it was actually happening. I spent about 9 hours in the hospital before even getting any pain meds. Until they removed my pants later, I thought I just had some really bad fabric burn. I knew I was bleeding, because the pants were sticky, but at that point everything hurt so much I couldn't focus on more than my foot and hand, which hurt so much I thought I broke a ton of small bones. My fingers felt cold and stunned for about two hours after, but I forced myself to move them right after the crash, and they weren't broken. At any rate, the doctors didn't do anything for my huge scrapes but look at them and utter surprise and awe. They didn't clean them or put anything on them. I showered when I got home, almost passed out from the pain, but managed to clean them with a soapy scrubbing thing. Today, I put a bunch of neosporin on both sides and wrapped in gauze. It seems very surface, but extreme. Definitely get riding pant's, too. Get everything. These sedici pants were designed to be abrasion resistant and they still gave up the ghost near the end. The butt of the pants is almost entirely ripped way in spots, which matches some very deep bruises I got there. I could never understand people who wore no gear, or a helmet and no gear. Flip flops, shorts, and a tank top?! I just don't get it. I walked away from this pretty unscathed, all things considered. Razzled- Thanks man! And my phone died in the first hour, so I had no distraction whatsoever. It wasn't a fun experience at all. Being made to sit down, then stand up, over and over again was pretty bad. I had a similar experience once...hit something, maybe a dead animal, felt like the front end was 2 feet off the ground from ramping off it. Dumb luck meant I landed with everything inline. Glad you have no broken bones - gear is a wonderful thing.

Picture time! Here's my ankle, after being somewhat set.  Relative to the base of the tibia (big bone), my foot is shifted to the right. The fibula (little bone) is broken a little way above the plate that's already in there. It's hard to see, but there's a small chunk broken off of the tibia as well.  Here's a picture of my ankle just before surgery today. That angry red spot? Not road rash -- that's where my tibia was trying to poke through my skin after the foot dislocation*. I was wearing tall, reasonably protective Sidi boots as well. I wonder how it would have gone down if I was wearing SMX-5s. I just got surgery done to stabilize the leg-bones. They gave me a nerve block, so I absolutely can't feel anything in my leg right now. They say that's going to wear off around 2 am, so I'm going to be on prescription narcotics for a little while. *Fortunately, it failed. I got my first good look at the injury in the ambulance when they were taking my boots off. I saw the shape of my ankle through my sock and asked "Is it compound? I guess not, since there's no blood."

I always lane position to have a view even if that means straddling lanes. I learned that trick recently. Makes a big difference on visibility. Also, I rarely ride at night.

Your ankle x-ray is making my ankle hurt. I bet you might have fared a bit better with the SMXs but really who knows. I don't wear mine all the time because it's much easier just to toss on my TCX boots and run out the door. Hearing about crashes like the last few in this thread have got me thinking about risk mitigation again. Maybe it's worth the extra minute every trip to put on the A*s and make sure to zipper my pants into my jacket.
