The game itself has had a ridiculous power creep too though, just look at stuff like Megas. For a big community, I don't really see the harm in having a ruleset laid out like this, even if a few of their decisions are weird.

I'm honestly certain we're going to be seeing other rulesets pop out soon that are far less ridiculous, swallowing up the void left by the people who drop Smogon. All they'll be good for is as a starting point for movesets, team ideas, etc. I remember reading here once that one of their moderators threw a temper tantrum after losing on a simulator and that it's still around somewhere. Something about them only losing because of a low damage roll. this same person routinely makes smarmy replies if you disagree with literally anything. Definition of a big internet loser sitting on their jedi council or whatever they call themselves

The metagame exists to make the real game fun to play, and that's brilliant. I just think it's overstepping the bounds of that, because there is no metagame if the fans disagree with it.

Instead of making more SR-type moves, how much would the meta be affected if you had to put two layers of SR out, like with Toxic Spikes? 1 layer does base 1/16th, 2 does what it does now? I mean, as a competitive newbie, it seems that moves like SR are the major factor that has to be figured in, more than any other move, hell, even more than type advantages/disadvantages. It's a bit daunting.

Not too drastically in my opinion, it would be used maybe slightly less but it would still be the only entry hazard able to punish switch in to Flying types, and while people always talk about the damage SR does one of the real traits of SR and even Spikes is the ability to break Focus Sashes and Sturdy which is a massive bonus and can shutdown some Pokemon entirely.

Mega-Venusaur in doubles: Giga Drain/Sludge Bomb/Sleep Powder/Protect, or has anybody had luck with anything more exciting? Smogon doesn't have anything for doubles, and I feel like Synthesis won't be worth it in doubles. Same with breeding for HP- I feel like two STABs (one with a bit of healing) and a utility move, plus the required Protect, is probably the way to go. But I'd like to hear another opinion before I get to breeding.

I'm not sure how the cheating devices work but with the official release of Diancie in Japan just about everyone I've seen has at least one. Over on the FB trade pages I've seen people trading away entire boxes of Diancie. I've seen a lot of English ones with the Japanese ones and a lot of them have the same IV spread. It's pretty funny seeing somebody grab a Diancie from a friend and then go to a trade page trying to get as many legends and shinies as they can for it only to see that everyone is also offering their thirty or so Diancie.

Powersaves does have a code for diancie, but it is marked as fake and says it is made from info on bulbapaedia and not a direct copy of the event distribution card and pokemon. In any other cases, these event created mons are indistinguishable from the ones received from he actual event so when it finally comes out here, the actual stats/moves/nature/ball/ribbons, etc may be different. I'm backing up my cart now to check it out.

Crosscontaminant posted:This still leaves the really clearly overpowered Megas - Kangaskhan, Gengar, Lucario. I think the problem is Smogon doesn't have any clear idea of when it's time to stop suspect-testing and let things settle, because the game will never reach a state of balance. The only reason for the lull is because the Swagger and Baton Pass stuff was effectively a distraction - they weren't things that naturally stood out in the usage data but which were determined through theoretical analysis and turned out to be too resilient to organic counterplay. Also RIP Deoxys-D/S. I'm kinda irritated because the ban was basically for the Screens/Hazards sets, aka "muh Stealth Rock and Spikes", and Deoxys-S ended up in the crossfire. I don't give a gently caress about hazards, give me my Revenge Killer set back; I like my outspeeding everything and nuking poo poo with Psycho Boost/Superpower/Ice Beam. And seriously, an Aegislash suspect test? If they really wanted a suspect test, it would have made more sense at the beginning rather than now. For Aegislash checks, Fire and Dark Pokemon in general are good since Aegislash doesn't want to eat STAB moves from either of them, and of course there's Earthquake. King's Shield is good, but it's not going to let Aegislash survive forever, and it can even backfire if your opponent uses it to setup a Swords Dance/Nasty Plot/etc. If you want a really nice check: Sacred Fire Entei. Sacred Fire hurts like gently caress, has a 50% chance to burn, and doesn't make contact, because gently caress you, that's why.

Mega Scizor seems like an interesting rain setter if you have a mega slot open. 80/140/100 bulk makes it tougher on the physical side and nearly as bulky specially as Deoxys-D but with actual offensive presence and defensive typing. Not having Damp Rock hurts but with Politoed and maybe having Rain Dance on one of your offensive threats it can still get the job done.

fade5 posted:This, right here, I mean god drat, the Deoxys-D/S ban literally just came down a couple days ago, and they're already doing another suspect test. Seriously, wait two or three months for the metagame to settle and then see if anything's still dominating. This is very true - and they used to take a lot more time with their suspect tests. I was a ~smogonfag~ back during Gen 4 and the start of Gen 5, and the major differences between then and now are: - Only people who actually knew what the hell they were doing got involved in the suspect process. Most of the mods were good at Pokemon, good at moderating, and they ran a good ship. - It took a lot more effort to get into simulator play, so there were far less people on Smogon. The community was a hell of a lot better back then. Nowadays Smogon's filled with the same idiots that inhabit every other Pokemon fansite (eg Serebii), but it also gets the super-special sperglords who wouldn't have slipped under the radar back when there were ~2000 members and a mod staff appropriate to that number. Someone's going to mention the Salamence ban, I'm sure, but they put a lot more thought and due process into that than any other ban in Gen 4. It was by no means a rushed decision like their more recent dumb bans have been.

The gen 4 Salamence ban actually made sense, kind of like the Mega Lucario ban - It was way too loving versatile, and you had to gamble basically your entire team on predicting which set it was running. It was fine for the time it worked in. And yeah, I too remember smogon when it was (slightly) less lovely. It's a shame it got really popular and didn't keep up with that popularity effectively.
