In EMS and in hospitals, we ignore the tattoos, because they're not legally valid. That orange (or whatever your state dictates) DNR is the only valid piece of paper. No paper, we resuscitate, sorry. I've had family members screaming at me while I do CPR on grandma because they couldn't produce the paper, and it's honestly 50/50 they actually have a DNR and just can't find it (tip: keep it handy at all times, it's a loving DNR) vs they just want grandma dead so they can sell her house. We don't take any chances.

It's gotten a lot better, the late 90's was when the division on the Asian refugees from Vietnam and other places began to have their kids merge into the wider society. So now the second generation is having kids now and the reality is that Sydney is turning very quickly into a true Asian city, I think from what I read last week that the overall Asian background residents is now over 25% and the level of non-english speaking households is now approaching 30% and in many suburbs is now a majority - the process seems to be accelerating as well (That doesn't mean the residents don't speak English tho, most households are bi-ligual).

I rather like it. I think Sydney has improved big time in the last 10 years with the change in demographic - The old stereotypical Westie oval office is dying out and being replaced by Asian influences, I really wont be surprised if Sydney going majority Asian decent happens in the next 10 years.

What's kind of funny is what happens here sometimes is first and second generation immigrants really want to assimilate, but then their kids who've lived in the U.S. their whole life want their own cultural identity and embrace their heritage.
Which actually I've done just a little. I was born here but am partly eastern European but was never really much interested in that until I got older. My mom just wanted to assimilate to culture here so I didn't really get a taste of it until the past few years on my own volition.

Also yeah when I visited Sydney it was the month before the Olympics so everything was tourist oriented which is a handy time to be a tourist :)

THAT'S why my blood pressure shot up a little while ago!

It was the 90-97 model years. 98+ ditched that stupid captive rotor design. who the gently caress thought of that, and why?!? One of my coworkers has a 96 that she wants me to work on.. needs front brakes, ball joints, tie rods, timing belt, front and rear crank seals, cam seal, oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, muffler, heater core, tail light housing, LF power door lock mechanism, parking brake cable, and I forget what else. Half of that is just so it'll pass safety; it also needs a cat to pass smog (CEL is lit, but only P0420 pops up). The only things that work properly on that car are the power windows, a/c, and transaxle+clutch (and that's not for long with the way it pisses oil from the rear main).

I laughed so hard the moment she said it needed brakes. Once I looked closer at it, I told her she'd honestly be better off junking it, or keeping it registered in Colorado. She didn't like either option.

Sad thing is, it only has 130k. I told her if nothing else, get the ball joints and timing belt done A-loving-SAP, and get the muffler done unless she drives with the windows down. She got the ball joints done, but her dad keeps telling her "if the timing belt breaks it's no big deal". It's an F22, it's an interference engine that WILL bend valves even if it breaks at idle, it's a big deal. :argh:

DFW isn't bad, as long as you don't live in Dallas proper (DPD has a terrible response time, there's tons of corruption within the city itself [particularly the PD], and you'll want to eat a bullet if you ever have to use I-635 or I-35E.. typical big city poo poo I guess). Most of the suburbs range from "eh" to "holy poo poo how much house am I getting for this money again?!" to "holy poo poo this closet is $500k?!". The further out from Dallas you get, the cheaper property gets, and we have an awesome light rail system. North(ish) Plano to downtown Dallas in under 45 minutes, which is much faster than driving during peak hours... for $5 (for a day ticket - that lets you ride all the trains and buses within DART until 3am the next morning)

But yeah, there's the whole "no job" part.

I'm a QA at the company that makes the majority of parts for Ford as well as Nissan, BMW, Mercedes, VWoA, Chevrolet, & Toyota. What we do is we manufacture or ship in the bare metal parts from our other manufacturing locations in the area. We then check them for any physical manufacturing defects, put them together via bolting, welding, or whatever, and re-check them. They are then sent off to their respective car companies to be assembled into what goes on the road. I get a good laugh when people complain about cars being built in Mexico or Canada or whatever; because sure they're assembled there, but they're still really made in the U.S. Basically we build the legos and the car companies put them together and paint them at their plants. Here's a peek into the frame & chassis assembly line for Toyota:

That yellow tent on the right is one of the many welding stations for Toyota's smaller chassis parts. Then they get put on that rail system on the left and the robots finish welding everything up into one giant piece. Other companies make their products nearby too. Companies like Akebono (manufacturer of a good-sized chunk of most brake components), Bendix, Holley, Murakami, Chevrolet Corvettes, and others are all within a 15-20 mile radius of each other.
