Do you hate the looks or how it plays? Because it plays awesome (and I'm a sucker for the model too, TIE Fighter was the first real computer game I owned).

I've spent about $260 all told. That's 2 starters and one of every other ship except the 2 biggest ones, and the Falcon. So add another $20 or so for the Falcon. Eventually I want to get the Transport too, but I mostly play Imperial so there's not much I want it for besides the new X-Wing pilots. Sub-300 for the entire main line of a mini's game is pretty good, and I can run most lists I care to.

As i understand it, spending $320 for all of that gets you alot more in this game than it would in some other miniatures game though.

No argument there, it compares to other games just fine; but do I need yet another game in my life, that is the real question? I'll ask a guy who attends my weekly game night to bring it and have a test run and I guess I'll know then.

If it helps any, it's pretty much become my 'go to' game these days and I'm the kind of guy who just doesn't have time for another game. Except against one regular opponent who played a few games using just the starter set and didn't really gel well with it. Trying to get him to play a game with more ships though, might get him a little more excited for it.

The real deal breaker for me is that ships are cheap and I don't need to get them painted up, I really don't have much spare time to dedicate to painting these days so having a completely playable force out of the box is a big bonus. I still enjoy my painting, just get very little time to do it that's all.

So, if I get this job, I'll get a discount, albeit a lovely one, on boosters and starters. I still have no idea how the mechanics work or how the game plays, but gently caress it, I want an Ion Defender. That was my ship throughout Tie Fighter.

Is it worth it to just buy the Rulebook and cards separately?

I don't know that you can. The core set is great anyway, and I'd recommend getting two just to get all the dice you'll ever need, a second set of templates to teach lure other people into playing, and the extra ships. Defender is awesome, too!

The model and rules. I'm getting better at using it in the game but prefer the 181st aces or phantoms instead of the white u-turn. The model though looks way too large than I imagined and not at all sleek. I thought the wing struts were closer to the body from the decipher card art and the panels not so spread out.

Hi guys,

I'm new to the game having only played 3 matches so far.

I'm having some trouble fitting a defender into my lists on account that its so points heavy.

Would be great if you guys can share with me some good/common defender loadouts and pilots

Thanks!

Just a quick question that came up at a game the other day when dropping the proton bomb does it go off at the end of the bombers activation phase or at the end of the whole activation phase just before shooting?

I'm really finding that Defenders work well with a mini-swarm, so you'd try to give your opponent a choice between 'a rock and a hard place'. The Defender can actually dish out great damage and also keep bad guys in arc without stressing out, while the mini swarm can achieve reliable threat.

The card says at the end of the activation phase, so I'd take that to mean at the end of the entire activation phase.

Defender is pretty amazing, and I keep making 3-ship Imp lists with one crammed in there, decked to the nines. Being able to k-turn while stressed really messes with people. I've seen another player actually run 3 (2 PS 1 ships and a named) of them and it did really well.

That said, it once again raises the question of where they'll go to for ships now. It feels like they're starting to run out.

I mean, what's left? Missile boats? Assault gunboats? And will there ever be a huge Imperial ship, because I can't really think of one that fits the size and scale?

It's a pretty interesting question, all they can really do is re-releases without pulling out ships which aren't really unique. There really are only so many original trilogy era ships.

That just raises a different question — or rather resurrects it — from back in the days of the WEG Star Wars RPG. In one intro adventure, the players had to sneak through a base crawling with imperials, hop in the Y-Wing parked at the bottom level, and escape in a panic as two AT-ATs were closing in to reinforce the imperial troops.

But of course, the players being RPG players, they just took the Y-Wing, casually proton torpedoe:d the walkers and flew off into the sunset without a care in the world. Was there ever any rational explanation (or, hell, an irrational one) for why they didn't do that on Hoth and instead relied on dinky speeders with blasters and harpoons?

There's that line about having trouble adapting their speeders to work in the cold, maybe the starfighters had the same problem (this doesn't make sense, I know, space is cold [or hot, depending on how close you are to a star]) but hey, it's a movie.

I always thought they had limited Space Fighters that they needed to escort the evacuating Transports, so they might as well use the Speeders since they were going to be left behind anyway.

That works I suppose. Also, the entire problem might reside in trying to use RPG characters as the basis for what's sane and sensible. :D
Knowing those players, my guess is that in a Hoth scenario, they would have just rammed the AT-ATs with the transports on their way into space.

They are mostly running out of "true" Imperial ships - there's a fuckton of armed civilian ships/ships from specific planets they could release, but not that really fit within either faction (they would probably fit better in with the Rebels as a general kind of "civilian ships converted to fight" thing than with the Imperial armed forces).

Regardless of how hot or cold space 'is' (there's not much there to be hot or cold), it's a totally different environment. You're not going to get ice and snow jamming your actuators in space. Shedding heat from your engine or even your computer equipment can be a problem in space.

IIRC they had to specifically convert the speeders to deal with the cold weather as well. They didn't use them because they were suited to cold weather, they used them because of what they had (and the fact that they were atmospheric fighters and hence probably cheaper than space-faring fighters, which they probably didn't have in huge amounts).

I don't know, that's actually a pretty good reason to make a "third faction" of pirates/bounty hunter/general scum.

I mean, between the Hutt and Black Sun, there are enough big criminal factions in Star Wars that there's justification for them fighting Imperial or Rebel squadrons, and there's a lot of ships that would fit better in a pirate faction than tacked on to Imperials or Rebels. On top of that, FFG could just make them fieldable by both sides - that would be a perfect way of adding more ships to the game.

That, or just open up for three-way brawls over some common objective, which again harkens back to many of the computer games: a non-aligned faction holding some kind of asset that, say, the rebels want to have and the imperials want to deny them. Both the rebels and the “pirates” have to keep the imps from just blowing the stuff up, and both the imps and the pirates have to keep the rebels from tractor-beaming it. Or some such.
