Oh yay. Yeah, I figured you were part of that goat rodeo by the sounds of it. Edmonton Garrison wound up in Southern Alberta instead. Everyone got to have fun. TF 2-13 learned lots of useful warfighting skills down there...

Navy is such a bad place to be right now. Seeing the lovely attitude of Chiefs on down in almost every hard sea trade upsets me. The "give a gently caress factor" is gone from many of them, especially when it comes to the problems of someone else. "Don't care, getting out in 2 years...", really? I have yet to meet more than one CPO2 that I could truthfully say "I want to be that kind of Chief". Instead you have all these smart and dedicated junior guys getting their inspiration and motivation flagrantly dismissed or worse, mocked, that attrition levels are rising and they don't care. So we're left with idiots. I think it was in here I read someone was at the admirals town hall, cited how the Royal Navy is putting aside X amount of money for retention and was there a plan to do the same for us? Only to be immediately jumped on by some chief saying "The RCN is a volunteer service, if you don't like it you can volunteer to leave." What the gently caress? In 2008, you would never hear anyone sincerely ask "Are we getting any port visits this sail?". /rant

Things certainly aren't good right now, with cost-cutting affecting virtually every aspect of CF life. I haven't personally seen a massive shift in attitudes recently - though I've been ashore for over a year and rather isolated from the fleet for it. Bad attitudes are contagious though and I try to check those in my guys. Brand new OSs don't need their ears filled with someone's opinion about how they made a terrible choice to join when they did.

I would say the Army is in a pretty similar state. I know in the reserves, there was a time where new recruits were being given steel toe and wet weather boots as their only issue because of the supply issues with brown boots. That kind of thing is pretty toxic.

The only reason I hung on was because there are some pretty sweet deals to be had like UTPNCM, but I did draft my release memo during a sail in 2007 (my last sail as it turns out). The general profile of a Chief is shocking dumbness combined with arrogance - Dunning-Kruger. But it's forces wide, I've seen it in the AF just as much. I have met a few good C2s but I don't know if I can name any C1s I admire. The good C2s stall at that rank and often become quite awesome as a result. The C1 that bugs me most was, when he was a P1, banging one of his P2s, i.e. direct subordinate (both married to other people) regularly at sea, and everyone knew it. I get angry whenever I see him in the Lookout, and I presume he will be a Cox'n soon.

Well, for FY14/15 there is ZERO intake for Bioscience. Meaning that it's closed and we're not hiring. Any application in the works will sit on a dusty shelf until somebody retires and a position opens up, or treasury dollars fall from the sky. I don't know how patient you are, and my info doesn't extend beyond this current fiscal year. I also don't have the numbers for FY13/14, and sometimes they carry over positions year to year if they're not filled, but seeing as it's closed... The qualifications that would set you up for Bio would probably also allow you to apply successfully to a bunch of other officer trades if you're interested.

Thanks, I just started a 3 year PhD program so I can afford to wait. I also had an application being processed for pilot for over a year, but it was taking so long that I started the aforementioned PhD because I didnt want to wait any longer. I was applying under DEO.

What is the current intake/availability like for pilot? I have some other irons in the fire right now for career ideas but being a pilot has always been something of a dream of mine, even though I now know how much bullshit they deal with and how little flight time they get these days. The only thing I sorta dread would be being posted to Cold Lake after having to live in that hellhole for 7 and a half years but meh

Not sure on the CT front, as I don't think those are handled by the office. As far as pilot goes, it's one of the few officer trades that is perennially open. It's always going to be pretty competitive, though, because we only have so many planes. I can check the actual numbers for you tomorrow, but I still would have no idea on the number of applications that are being processed across Canada. I'm sure a PhD in an applicable field would give you a pretty strong boost to any application - most DEOs that I see (unless they're applying for some specialty trade like Dental or Medical) just have a BA/BSc like myself.

Yeah Cold Lake has that small SAR rotary wing squadron, plus I'd want to go fighter anyways. Anything but one of the dopey planes like an aurora or something really, but I'd still 100% prefer fighter. Working roads and grounds there and seeing how loving stupid our government has gotten with cutting funding at every single level they possibly can, on top of the general melancholic glum that most of the guys had, was pretty eye opening. OTOH I'd be reasonably close to the Rockies and some great fishing/waterways, so I think I could suffer through it alright.

QFT. Imagine getting all qualified on Hornets and then being told you're not needed right now, have fun instructing Harvards in MJ. Imagine actually getting on squadron and flying 80 hours a year: some guys at my helo OJT last year were getting about 40 a month. The lead-in phases for fighter are reportedly really lovely in their own right, job related bullshit-wise. There are very few AF base postings that aren't frozen hellholes, so basically you need to come to peace with it. That said, Goose Bay is my nightmare.

I did something similar almost 10 years ago (sigh) when things were better as far as being treated like grownups, and it kind of loving sucked because there was absolutely no free time and definitely no fun. I've since come to the conclusion that if someone says "It will be a good go" you need to be very suspicious and "good go" can normally be translated to "bag drive." I did a battlefield tour like that about a decade ago and that poo poo was pretty cash. Hit up a bunch of landmarks, cemeteries, and battlefields over ten days in northern France. Days were scheduled pretty tight but the atmosphere was pretty chill (we even had a 'WineO' on the tour bus to pour out lovely boxed wine on the move ). Nights were ours so we could still be pretty stupid. The guy I roomed with literally threatened to kill me every morning I had to wake his hungover rear end up too
