Good news! Tim Eyman's latest initiative to try and reduce state revenue by slashing the sales tax won't be on the ballot this November because he failed to collect the amount of signatures needed. This will be the first time since 2006 that there isn't an Eyman initiative on the ballot. He's been struggling because one of his biggest money-funding old men croaked last year, and businesses are starting to see that his initiatives rarely pass, or if they do, get defeated in court because they're unconstitutional.

Did anyone else run by Cannabis City yesterday? I went by with a friend around 7pm and it was a pretty good scene. About an hour wait but everyone was super friendly including the security folks and employees. They were letting about 5 people into the store at a time and it was loaded with news cameras. For the product they were starting to run low and probably sold out a few hours later. Price was pretty bad, $20/gram in 2 gram packages. The price included all the taxes though. They only had indica strains available, no sativa right now. Overall was a pretty cool experience and landmark moment.

It was slash the sales tax, unless congress passes a constitutional amendment reinstating the 2/3rds vote to increase taxes. It would have been declared unconstitutional again and got nowhere.

Apparently Da Vinci Days was cancelled this year due to the festival not being profitable. Looks like they are still doing the kinetic race, but I'm not sure about schlepping up to Corvallis just for that. Also, they tend to do that at some ungodly hour like 10am or something.

Hi local gov goon in the Seattle subs here, I can shed some light on the frequency of shops in each area. Basically the liquor boards decided in lottery by application who can apply for a local business permit to sell weed. The winner can then apply to the jurisdiction they're interested in for a business permit. In my city this resulted in 6 permits being applied for before anyone understood this. Names like Purple Haze and Mary Jane Co. Were popular. Since then we've had a smattering of people attempt to apply. County ordinance says the shops have to be 1000 feet from schools and daycare centers, which is apparently really hard to grasp. I don't know why someone applied to sell at the existing location of a bartell drugs, they don't lease the location? Someone else applied to sell out of their residence, which is a ha no. A third applied to put their shop next to a kindercare center. What I'm getting at is that reading regulations doesn't seem to be working out for potential sellers thus far. Yeah it's been a recurrent issue for the last few years. They could hold the festival, but they were beginning to have serious doubts about its sustainability. My understanding is that money from the various institutions around Corvallis was drying up a bit, and that there was an overall concern about a lack of focus. It's a great festival with a lot of moving parts, but it's difficult to identify what are the most important elements to emphasize. Is it an arts and music festival with the big stage shows? Is it a platform for promoting STEM education to kids? What is the role of the food vendors, or the film festival? What is it's relationship to the coincidental Kinetic Sculpture Race or the stage productions at the Majestic Theatre? Lots of questions to answer. So they decided to take a year off and think about it. Hopefully it won't turn into two years, as it has always been one of my favorite festivals. That said, the Kinetic Sculpture race is a blast to watch, and definitely worth a look if you haven't taken the opportunity to before.

Small business owners are by and large morons who are just exercising their god given rights to own a business and make magic profit. (The ones i've worked for anyway) There's a reason such a high number ultimately fail with the owners in the hole in the tens of thousands. Also - they have a huge tendency to resist making doing taxes easy with like the quickbooks small business edition. Always gotta go to some accountant who is supposedly going to save them so much more money. Realistically they're probably aching for an audit.

Our City Council seems to be muted about if they have any strong feelings about there being actual businesses selling pot, they are afraid enough of being percieved as anti-free enterprise to not talk about any potential ban on selling. They did bring up about if there should be an ordinance banning city staff from consuming pot though. As the youngest member of regular staff I found this particularly amusing. Today on KUOW during the 12:00 hour they were talking with a University of Washington Professor about the basics of pot laced food consumption. After a lifetime of the DARE program scare tactics it was kind of surreal when the host was asking questions like "Where do you suggest people new to this go, being that it's legal everywhere?"

Being that I've only heard of half a dozen even being approved in any area, and knowing what it takes for Cities and counties to update that data, google will be about 6 months behind the municipal data unless they happen to check it right after an update. Generally speaking what happens is Permit is issued -> Building Permit approved -> <stuff happens> business has final address -> local government collects/updates data -> higher up government collects/shares/misrecords data -> yellow pages and others scrape data for free from public records and then sell it -> a ditch in the middle of no where is now listed as the location of adult entertainment category business Pima Medical Institute. Here is a list of stores with phone numbers so you can call and see if they are open. A lot aren't because they either ran out or never had enough supply to open in the first place. If the nuclear plant over in the Tri-Cities area is shut down, it's going to be replaced with coal or gas. They're not going to build another hydroelectric dam, and solar and wind aren't going to be able to fill that gap. Also, Hanford and Columbia Generating Station are two different things; Hanford is the one with the hideous waste disposal problems, going back to atomic bomb development during WWII.
