Just coincidentally, after Kickstarter and Amazon fees $500 is about the cost of an iPhone. But I'm sure this is a coincidence and has nothing at all to do with the photos being taken on an iPhone.

I like to come up with completely retarded ideas for kick starters but unfortunately I lack the talents to follow through. For example:

I wanted to get someone to mimic this nazi propaganda poster but with Rainbow Dash from My Little Pony (and a different flag etc.), put it on a T-shirt, put the "14 words" on the back, but revised to be relevant to ponies and then see how many Bronies I could get to contribute to straight up nazi propaganda.

Like I said though, I lack the talent. In this case I can't draw worth poo poo. But when I get bored I spend a lot of time thinking up idiotic things I could do kick starters for

I'd like to point out that the Palos Verdes Peninsula, where the creator is from, is one of the most affluent places in Southern California. I'm not saying everyone there is Mr. Moneybags, because my family certainly was not, but chances are they can afford $500 for an iPhone or whatever. I mean, a yearly pass to Disney parks already costs $500+. But have some census stats of the four cities comprising the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

They all are not exactly great, but this one made me angry for some reason. There are EQ presets on your phone already, you don't even need that option by his logic. And the device is not even portable! You can only use it with stereo, so any decent 5.1 audio system is out of the question. All that, while there are plenty of portable preamps that you can basically strap to the back of your audio player, plug your headphones and that's it. The audacity of this prick, when he says there's nothing like that. Ugh.

It's yet another day in the wasteland.

EVE Online is pretty unique among MMOs, what with being a non-sharded, non-instanced, PvP-centric single universe. Well, not for long… or something… now that Event Horizon is being proposed.

Surely, it's uniqueness is due to its being such a trivial implementation that everyone is going for a much complicated design and, really, anyone with mid-'90s sensibilities can replicate it. So how do you go about doing that? Why, with flexible funding of course.

Conventional logic would have you refute his claim by quoting examples of other existing products that are like his. You try to do so by mentioning how it's lacking features of completely different products aimed at completely different niches. Just wanted to point out that that's a bit weird, maybe

I don't care for headphone amps, portable or otherwise, nor do I care for 5.1 or EQ presets. A simple stereo amp with that selection of input options would work perfectly for me. For the love of god, drop the infuriating audiophile marketing bullshit (which makes this kickstarter well mockworthy) and sell it at $200-$250 or something, but yeah. I even like the way it looks.

I have no idea whether something with the specific featureset already exists or not, but dude's got a point that there is a niche for a thing like this.

How can anyone honestly be of the opinion that we need more ways to express that you like a page on the internet? There are literally over a dozen icons under any youtube video you want to share. There are already half a dozen ways to pay people for their ramblings.

As for the second one look at those buzzwords! All for another social alert wristband, there are so many of these things and I have never seen a human in real life use one. Good lord that bracelet is ugly too. I love that they are acting like its a way to meet people or a conversation piece. They have a video of a guy picking up a girl because they both use instagram and youtube. Wow! Soulmates!

Creepier, it monitors your social networking profile and alerts you any time someone nearby has similar interests. My absolute favorite part has to be that they describe the (unsettling) fact that people look at their phones every 6 or so minutes as a waste of time. They do this right before actually suggesting you wear a bunch of blinking social media icons on your wrist; sometimes I worry we are already living in the Brave New World.*

*Or I would if anyone wore this poo poo.

Anyway, Onto the cesspool of indigogo:

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bistro-the-smart-feeder-that-recognizes-your-cat-s-face
Okay, this could be useful for people. However: I am not going to resist posting a cat feeder with cat facial recognition software and diet management systems. It lets you connect with other cat owners and... share your cat? Its every calorie counting wrist band, but for cats. I have doubts the facial recognition would work for very similar cats, but I see no technical reason this could not function as intended; it is just so bizzare. anyway $102,057 CAT PEOPLE! (Seriously though, its kind of an impressive device, I just can't really take it seriously.)

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/its-a-router-its-a-tablet-its-home-automation-its-soap
Soap is a device I flat out do not believe. Its claiming to be a high end router, with built in virus protection and Honeypots. All that technically exists yes, but then it gets iffy. They mention a lot about it being 802.11ac but nowhere do they inform you that all the devices they list like phones and game consoles? Are currently NOT and do not support gigabit wireless. Then it mentions it can control all home automation... well is there a standard for those that it can interface with? I have no real knowledge but it seems more complicated than that.

Then they literally claim it stops bullies. It monitors your children online and when someone is being a bully it alerts you. It also blocks porn (poor teens) but not with a blacklist or proxy, no no no. It uses NEVER BEFORE SEEN TECHNOLOGY without slowdown. Plus buy more than one tablet and they form a beowulf cluster! $179,999 folks.

Yeah, I dig. I think it's funny that they're taking the "we've simplified it for you" angle to market to a demographic who's bread and butter is nerding out and over-complicating this poo poo.

It's also a 50-watt amp (and that's 50 watts in today's circuit design/measuring language, not 50 watts from the 1970s that could shake pictures off of your walls) in a tiny enclosure so the idea that it could give someone the same experience as a 300 lb stack of separates is pretty rich. There's also already a small army of good looking, great sounding ~50 WPC stereo desktop amps and even self-powered speakers on the market that cost between an eighth and half of what this guy's charging and the connectivity options that he's touting can be added for dirt cheap.

The only thing that this has sort of going for it is looks and you can get a vintage receiver or amp with way more character and way more power (and which will probably sound better) off of Craigslist for under $200.

I'm not sure why this kickstarter exists. It gets points for transparency, though.

I love it.

He offered a clever and roundabout way of asking for money they're going to waste anyway. I hope he spends that money on improving his life. :unsmith:

With links to charities it seems like he was trying to say that people who donated to potato salad-like kickstarters are pretty stupid. A good kickstarter with a good message behind it.

I hope this kicks off and the same thing happens to it as with all the other ironic kickstarters like the potato salad: A bunch of people bandwagon on the cause then immediately try to start controlling it and criticizing the rathole guy's every move like he's running for political office.

The potato salad guy excitedly posted 17 updates in the first 11 days of that project but hasn't posted one for about a week now. Backers have also posted almost 1000 comments, approximately 100 of which were spam for other projects which have since been deleted by Kickstarter staff and the rest is mostly people bitching about the spam or bitching about the potato salad guy changing the main photo for his project or bitching about whether he's going to add new reward tiers or actually mail a bite of the potato salad to everyone or invite veterans to the party or make an alternate potato salad from organic ingredients or a hundred other pointless lovely things to argue about.

Imagine how much more sad and lonely we would be if not for the hard work of lowtax. Here's $12.95 to his aid.

From the Kickstarter Gaming thread, apparently the Yogscast game ("Yogventures!") project has failed.

In a way, this was somewhat inevitable; Yogscast is basically a pair of "we're funny because we're incompetent and ham it up when we fail" LPers on Youtube. So, you can't be too surprised that their game bombed as well. However, it actually ended up being incompetence-once-removed; Yogscast outsourced the production of their videogame to a third-party developer, and that dev ended up being a six-man studio, with half of the team working day jobs to keep themselves fed. Of course, a six-man part-time team wasn't exactly ready to crank out a voxel-landscape Minecraft clone with a full quest system and scripting/API system. They imploded almost exactly on the two year mark, after producing a few beta builds.

The dev company is shutting down (and will likely file for bankruptcy); Yogscast has been given all art assets and code produced so far. Apparently, their solution has to been to hook up with another Kickstarter, a horrible MMORPG attempt called TUG, and port over some of the Yogventures ideas/content into the TUG engine. All backers are being given TUG Steam keys as a consolation gift.

They gave $35k to an artist who did nothing and left to work at LucasArts, took at least $15k to themselves for pocket money, the rest to a devteam that was too small and inexperienced with not a single project behind them. What do they say about this?
