Just in case people are wondering this guy got reported so much in the AT thread that a mod came in and told everyone to chill out, it was funny.

I love the way he adds PS to edits.

Grownups can enjoy fantasy and new worlds and demons and aliens and even somewhat one-dimensional characters, and those are so much better serviced by cgi shows.
Like tmnt's mutants are incredibly fun to watch, they move so much like animals or aliens or whatever they're supposed to be and it makes the fights so much more interesting to watch than person vs person in a suit. Even tfprime despite complaints had gorgeously arranged choreography using vehicle/robot physics.

Meanwhile a lot of more "mature" shows still have monsters and fight scenes but are still limited by what you can make "look right" in a live action environment. I know it was the 90's and they were still enjoyable but I just finished the buffy and angel shows and the monsters and fight scenes got kind of tiresome after a while, it was only once in a while that they did something interesting with the fights.

I certainly didn't mean to imply that everything geared towards an older audience has to be a profound parable with sixteen possible interpretarions. Nothing wrong with some good old silliness from time to time.

But there is so much potential in animation, and a lot of it remains untapped because Disney taught the West to associate cartoons with children's entertainment.

Your impression of Buffy is a great example: if that had been an animated show, they could have made both fight scenes and the monsters themselves more interesting. I would have loved to see a teenage monster hunter duke it out with demons straight out of the Lesser Key of Solomon.

I actually lied a little. I have seen a few episodes of Adventure Time. That said, move the Adventure Time thread to GBS.

Also I'm now two episodes into Motorcity and I'm liking it well enough. The characterization has brick-like subtlety, but the action set pieces are well animated.

The CGI cartoons I've seen all have looked like hot garbage. Even in movies with decent computer animation it's starting to wear thin. Has it improved at all with recent shows?

But yes I think CN shows and anime can be more entertaining than live action TV in a lot of cases. I don't think it's worth critical analysis in most cases though (and neither is live action tv)

Yes, the new TMNT cartoon on Nick is wonderful. Since it's become a smash-hit, they've gotten a bigger budget and can be more detailed with the set pieces. But even in the first season they did a really good job of playing to their strengths. Scenes took place at night, or in confined, dark spaces, but still had detail to everything. Likewise, the characters look great, and the fight scenes are really, really well-choreographed and animated.

I think the biggest improvement is that they've been able to increase the amount of extras. Which is good because at the beginning of the show I found myself wondering why New York City was so empty at night.

I must have hit a nerve or something. It is just hard to watch a show with characters that look and move like they came out of one of those CAD shorts. The voice work is hard to tolerate as well sometimes and I could really do without the sister and her boyfriend.

Ok I get not liking the show. It IS a touch generic visually and it makes no real attempt to pull in an older audience so it's just not going to be a lot of people's cup of tea.

But comparing it to Johnny Test and CAD? That's just hosed up, bro.

It has its share of jokes that would fly over kids' heads and I think Regular Show is the only cartoon that more adults I know IRL watch, although I probably would never have watched it if I didn't have kids. I mean there's having your own opinion and then there's saying that it has art direction and animation worse than Johnny Test or CAD which is just objectively wrong.

P&F is a cute show but the visual design of the titular characters is pretty bad and doesn't fit in with the rest of the cast an all. Also taking them into 3d is horrific.
