I think he did own a few slaves during his early career and I forget if he manumitted them or sold them, but he did eventually shift to a pretty strong abolitionist stance, which is surely more than you can say for Tommy J. and many (though not all) other slaveholders of the period. Though he doesn't always get included in the category of "founding father," but Thomas Paine was a pretty consistently good thinker, though personally he was apparently such an obnoxious pain in the rear end America almost didn't bother to stop the French from executing him during the Terror. Monroe, the only friend he really had, intervened at, well, the 13th hour actually, since Paine should have been dead already but due to a clerical/logistical fuckup they forgot to bring him out to that morning's round of decapitations.
