The woman replied that her cat (for 19 years!) had recently passed away, but she wasn't sure if she wanted to adopt just yet-she and her husband were understandably bereft, and was wary about adopting a young cat because of their health. She didn't want to burden a family member-or have the cat go back to a shelter-if she and her husband passed away. She also wasn't sure what sort of cat to adopt. Our shelter has a system to sort of 'rate' cats-are they closet cats? Do they seemingly want to crawl inside you because they never want to be separated? Somewhere in the middle? Staff Lady was totally understanding and after a moment's thought introduced the woman to 10-year-old Bruce. BRUCE. This cat was like a living pillow. A striped tabby as big as a brick shithouse. And his most favorite thing? Being held like a baby. Nice Elderly Lady took to him at once. And to tell by the motorboat purrs, so did Bruce. Nice Elderly Lady was clearly in love, but said she'd have to ask her husband. She drove off and we all slumped a little. At least 50% of the time, people are too 'nice' to say no, and never come back. It sucks because you bond with these animals and want to find them a good home. Especially with an older animal, you see a possibility, it doesn't go through...and you spend an hour petting said cat. NEL came back 15 minutes later, and within half an hour Bruce was ready to go. I swear his carrier was vibrating with Tom Waits purrs. And Nice Elderly Gentleman could hardly stop petting him long enough to get Bruce in the carrier. I don't think I'll ever see Bruce again. I couldn't have a bigger smile.

Even though with little Eddie gone I really want another kitten, as I have never actually had a cat younger than 6 months, I find myself looking through local animal shelter ads for older or 'imperfect' cats who have a lower chance of being adopted. A few months ago I dreamed I had a fluffy orange boy with a missing leg named Iro. If I ever happen to see that in an ad I will not be able to stop myself from driving down and getting him right then and there.

And are self sufficient. Sorry if I missed something. But older cats are loving tits. Also 3-legged cats are amazingly capable at both moving around and being stupidly cute. I am not trying to dissuade you from adopting a kitten, Lion! Kittens need love too. But in many places, kittens get adopted much faster than adult cats. And adult cats are just as goddamned cute, and are less likely to poo poo on a rug.

This happened a long time ago at this point, but it is a positive adoption story, so I might as well share it. I grew up with a cocker spaniel mix who grew old and eventually died at the ripe old age of 16. My family was devastated, but the following year we decided to get a new dog. We ended up finding a kennel that carried PBGVs - a really sweet breed that's basically a mix between a terrier and a corgi. It's got a beard and floppy ears, but has very stubby legs and a long body. We named him Monty, and he was the smartest, naughtiest pup I've ever met. One time he actually tricked me by luring me out of my room after I had just brought in some food, and when I went to see what was up, he rushed past me and grabbed a big bite. He was a real marauder. Sadly, as it turned out, the place he came from was pretty much a puppy mill. His genetics were hosed due to inbreeding, and he suffered through cataracts and deafness, and was eventually diagnosed with a rare pancreatic disease which meant he couldn't digest anything, so he grew thinner and thinner until we finally had to put him to sleep. He was only 4. I loved him so much, and had recently moved out of the house, so it hit me pretty hard. Later that same year, my mom by complete happenstance came into contact with a woman who was looking to sell a PBGV. We looked into it, but didn't want to end up in the same scenario. After doing some research and talking to her, she clearly didn't run a puppy mill, but she still wanted to part with this one dog, which was about a year old. Although she wouldn't outright say it for obvious reasons, this dog was clearly being abused. She had two young boys who were extremely ADHD and weren't old enough to know what they were doing, but you could immediately tell that the dog was terrified of them. His name is Panda, and we took him home. He's never been very social, and he gets frightened very easily by quick movements. Most of all he really doesn't like children. My parents have worked very hard for years to train him and get him to trust humans again, but he still has days where he just hides under the bed for hours on end and won't come out no matter what we do. For the most part, though, he's such a happy, fun dog and getting him out of that place is one of the best things we ever did. If we're doing cat stories, I want to talk about my big fat man, Momo. Momo is the best cat ever, and here's why. When I first went looking for a cat,I didn't rally know what I wanted. If had many cats before but I never really have a certain cat in mind when I get them. So I'm looking at the cats and this tiny, tiny little sooty thing is just loving clawing at his cage and screaming at the top of his lungs trying to get to me. I knew right then that he was the one. I took him home that day. Through the years, he's always been right there, purring, head butting, abs doing everything he can to be close to me. Now, I have PTSD, abs somehow my big fat bastard knows exactly when I'm having trouble and he'll start right with me, gently nibbling and head butting me until I come back. He's my buddy, my best friend, abs I love him with my whole heart.

I don't have too many memories of my first cat, Charles, which was a barn cat that my mother brought with her, because he was older than me and did not have patience for stupid, annoying toddlers. One of my first memories was him clawing the back of my hand as I tried to use him to stand up; I remember a lot of blood but I never got stitches so there probably wasn't actually that much. He was put down after an accident, but he was already very old, at least partially deaf, and had numerous health problems so his life wasn't exactly cut short. The story of my second cat, Oliver, is a bit more heartwarming. He was a thin, scraggly adolescent cat that wandered into our backyard and started eating Charles' food a few months before he was put down. He was pretty clearly abused, his fur was in poor condition, and my parents told me not to touch him, but he kept coming back for more food and eventually I got to pet him. We did put out a missing cat ad in the newspaper but no one came forward to claim him. He was never comfortable around strangers, he refused to be held, and the closest he'd come to cuddling would be sitting on the headrest behind you or on your bed, but he did warm up to us a lot. He eventually passed away peacefully while sleeping in the garden over twelve years after we found him.
