Probably because "innocuous object becomes malicious and assaults random people for no discernible reason" describes a sizable chunk of King's work.

There's a good explanation for why you associated Stephen King with Duel:  Maximum Overdrive focuses heavily on evil big rigs. In the case of Maximum Overdrive, we never see the drivers because there are no drivers, but I can certainly see how you could conflate the two movies.
