I always thought that most of us were arguing for socialism and equal rights for everyone in some sort of system that would prevent oppression from or towards any particular group. Though yeah, some folks seem way too eager to lament their "whiteness".

That's because anyone who looks back on the history of white people should only feel shame and remorse. We can say, sure if the dice had rolled different and it had been Africa or South Asia that had risen as the dominant colonial power in world history then all the abuses and horrors white people did would've been done by them, but the fact is, they didn't and we did those things.

"We" didn't do anything man. Likely it wasn't even your anscestors that did any of it, unless you're a trust fund baby. The only problem I see is that we benefit from what they did, and live among people who want to keep it that way. But instead of gently caress You Got Mine, we're smart enough to realize that it was all luck. So it's more Got Mine, let's Get Yours.

I live in the South and, tracing my father's line back, I found out his greats and great-greats were farmers, so my ancestors were probably at least implicit in slavery if not slave owners themselves :smith:

Weren't most southern farmers non-slave owners, or at least if they owned a slave it was like one or two.

By far most Southerners didn't own slaves but it was kind of the aspirational goal for achieving success. Also they were fer slavery they weren't agin' it because of the South's long tradition of getting poor people to oppose their own interests.

Much like this recent ACA ruling came from a suit brought by a WV man who made $20k a year and had his annual healthcare costs reduced to $21 annually through federal healthcare subsidies smfh.

He was talking about colonialism. I've certainly not forcibly colonized an indigenous people recently. Modern white men and women are guilty for their own actions and words, and not the poo poo they were born with. Don't feel guilty that the police don't harrass you as much as your black and hispanic friends, get pissed that they harrass your black and hispanic friends.

I'm not sure if my family owned slaves but my great grandparents definitely used blacks and poor whites I suppose as cheap labor. We even had an unofficial (it took me a long time to realize this) bastard table at the family reunion. :smith:

True, but I'd argue that it mostly stems from the original issues of colonialism, slavery and capitalism. That and as left-oriented people, we're trying to do something about it. There's really no point in self flagellation over your birth circumstances. Unless it's just about feeling better about yourself, in which case, by all means proceed. I'm sure we all have plenty to feel guilty about that we've done on our own (in my case, micro-aggressions that I try to be more aware of now), then to worry about taking on the burdens of our fathers.

Things you do unconsciously that make someone else's day a little bit more lovely. Like locking your doors when you see a young black guy walking by, or being surprised at someone's appearance when you do an interview with them, not realizing that they were black/hispanic/etc. beforehand. People pick up on that stuff, and from what I've been told, it adds up to a lot of stress and feeling like poo poo for the folks who experience it.

Throw various world leaders into low earth orbit, repeat that process with military generals. Make a global warning to be excellent to each other, or I'd come for them too.
