I'll give it a try, then. One thing I was always wary of was how easily the z-95s were killed and I wanted to try corral because of that. Get the same firepower and make sure it actually hits before it gets killed. I suppose I can downgrade Han to Chewie and run either VI/FCS/R2D2 or predator and R2D2. However, I've never ran an offensive e-wing before, only Ethan with b/z. Do I treat it like an a-wing?

A bit late, but I treat him like an X-wing that has a little extra zip (the 5-straight and barrel roll)

I'm in love with the concept of Proton Rockets on Tycho. PTL, Outmaneuver, Proton Rocket, use PTL to Focus+TL and then lay down the hurt on something that doesn't like it.

The problem is Chardaan refit also effectively increases the cost of all Missiles to an A-Wing by 2 points. So a set of Proton Rockets is net cost to Tycho of 5 points, which isn't really worth it.

I'm really interested in Jake, especially with Chardaan/A-Wing Test Pilot. Hell, Green Squadron become quite interesting at that point, a 17 Point A-Wing with two Elite Pilot Talent slots? What's not to like? I mean, this is only 97 points, PS 7/3/3/3 which is solid enough and doesn't even take much effort to make the 'Rebel Soontir Fel':

I think at 97 points you're surrendering too much for an initiative bid. Give that Jake a stealth device or a hull upgrade or something.

I'm tempted to take Jake, two Greens (as above) then Garven Dreis. His special combos really well off Jake, and if Jake pops, he can still feed the Greens nicely. The other obvious option as you said, is to spend up and not bid for Initiative, but there's not much to spend it on besides the options you mentioned.

So I found that, in the end, I just couldn't resist after having played this game at a meet up. I'm not going in both feet first like some of you, but I'm getting a little starting set for 50 point games with friends - 1 core, plus 1 Interceptor and one A-Wing. My question is: if I was to get one more thing (another core, another expansion etc.) to make it more fun/varied, what would it be?

Another TIE Fighter, or a TIE Advanced. TIE Advanced are pretty poo poo on the competitive meta, but they open up some interesting options to Imperial players that they don't get on anything up until they hit Phantoms or Defenders, which are comparatively expensive. Another TIE Fighter gives you more TIE pilots to have some fun with.

In that vein, I'd also recommend getting a second X-Wing for the same reason. X-Wing versus TIE Fighter battles never get old, and two X-Wings with a couple upgrades is pretty even to a few of the TIE elite pilots.

It's too late. You had your chance. And I'm just getting started.
Bought a Phantom last weekend, and drew up this.

Veteran Instincts (1)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (16)
Concussion Missiles (4)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (16)
Concussion Missiles (4)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Total: 99

View in Yet Another Squad Builder

Feels like I'm on the right track, but, something tells me that two bombers and two academies aren't enough of a threat to actually give Echo enough breathing room to flank and do his thing.

Should I turn those Bombers into a Bounty Hunter with a HCL? It's 2 less hitpoints overall, and no missles, but 4 dice every turn.

What do you guys think?

I think Roark + Ion Turret is a solid combo. Pretty cheap, probably as or more durable than a Y or B-Wing thanks to 2 agility instead of 1. Not exactly amazing, but you get PS4 instead of 2, an extra agility, 2 less shield, and a slightly worse dial (but with more green, oddly), plus Roark's ability, for 1 extra point compared to a Gold. B-Wings are solidly better for any number of reasons, but if I were considering taking a Y-Wing for an ion turret, I'd probably always take Roark first for the added utility.

Did well with the big falcon. Still love using that large card. Big ships continue to permeate the meta so I might just downgrade Luke to a gunner and run a blue with advanced sensors. Upgrade the bandit to a Tala because I don't think the initiative bid would matter at that point.

So, what are people's thoughts on running a list similar to a Han or Chewie list, but as Imps? What would it look like for you? This has been prompted by looking at the stats on a naked Sigma and thinking it actually looks okay when you compare it to an X-Wing. Its dial is actually really good, 4 attack is great, of course, and 25 point puts it in a similar spot to a Red Squad X-Wing. Slightly less durable, but more damaging and mobile.

So, something like:

Boba Fett w/ Predator, Seismic, Rebel Captive
Sigma Phantom
2 Academy Pilots

Academy Pilots are your Z-95 replacements, Sigma is your X-Wing. Fett becomes your Han or Chewie. Gunner and Predator is a solid offense (and doesn't care if you're stressed, which is nice), while 2 Agility plus evade if needed makes you fairly durable. Positioning is more important since you have no turret.

Workable? Terrible? Anyone else run something similar that isn't a Big Ship + Howlrunner & Friends?

It's still a miniatures game, I'm not sure what to tell you there. It sounds like you want a tabletop version of hooking up a couple computers and playing X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter. (Which I want to do, now.)

You can still play it basic, nothing says you can't just agree with your friends to play the game casually with no named pilots, only ordnance-type upgrades, etc. The tournament meta/whatever is only something to worry about if you reeeally want to play competitively. And the squad that won the recent French Nationals was just 8 TIE Fighters, no special upgrades at all. Basic doesn't always mean uncompetitive, either.

As long as the people you're playing against aren't using min-maxed builds against you, its perfectly possible to just throw together some ships you like, use generic pilots, and just have a simple dogfight. You only run in to trouble if you try to take your For Fun list to a tournament or something.

Less aspergers, more being sick to death of "cute" custom lists of wargear and upgrades. I like simple rules that don't require you to remember that your commander has the Ignores All Fear Tests rule because of his cloak of awesome that you bought him as an upgrade.

I know this game will suffer from it less than say Warhammer, but it is still bothersome.

And I will try it before I immediately give up, never fear.

Honestly, Wave 4 has done a lot to stir things up, and Rebel Aces and Wave 5 will do more. Wave 4 seriously broke the game away from having 3-4 lists everyone ran, and has all sorts of crazy stuff. No one really even tried to run 3 elite pilots much before, but now it's starting to happen. Rebels can suddenly run a ton of cheap fighters, not just Imps. High PS actually matters and is useful in lists!

You don't like crazy skill-centric lists, but you don't like lists of spammed units either? I'm not sure what you'll find here to enjoy.

I agree that Wave 4 really broadened the gameplay, though; there really isn't one winner-take-all build. There are highly viable options in several basic categories, and even within those categories there's the ability to swap options out for something you think is better or fits your personal flying style more.

Do 60 point games. 50 points puts the Imperials at a huge disadvantage, I believe.

Another core set is the best value across the board (more dice, each user gets movement things and their own deck..etc), though the X-Wing and TIE Fighter expansions give you pilots you can use with ships you already have.

2x Royal Guard Interceptors w/PTL (All needed materials come with Imperial Aces)

Biggs Darklighter w/R2-D6 (Rebel Transport) and PTL (various), along with one Rookie Pilot
2x Grey Squadron Pilots w/Ion Cannons (Y-wing)
Black Squadron Pilot, 3x Academy Pilots
Obsidian Squadron Pilot, 3x Academy Pilots plus initiative.

You would have enough models to play a tutorial game, which is ~25 points on either side, keeping in mind that a "full" list is 100 points and that the game is better the more ships you have on the table.

You would also have one set of dice, range rulers, etc., which is enough for two people to play against each other without any real issues.

I demo'd the game to a couple of my friends earlier, using first 30/50 point games with non-core set material, and then a single, 24 point box set game. The box set game was by far the best overall game, with two Academy Pilots flying opposite a Red Squadron Pilot w/R2 Astromech.

Reactions were positive all around, and I'll be picking up a box set for one of them tomorrow when I hit the shop.

Has anyone found fun but competitively balanced low-point limits?

Weird things tend to happen when expanding past the box set but before getting to 100 points. In my experience 60 points is tough because that just barely allows a 5 AP list, without many answers. Luke and R2-D2 has balance problems at low point values too.

Application of the "Don't be a dick" rule has its merits. One of the games we played today was a 30 point game. A Delta Squadron Pilot on one side, Horton Salm with an Ion Cannon on another, and I ran Luke with Expert Handling. It was a good game. Horton rolled hilariously well and sent the Defender careening off the play area with four consecutive ion cannon hits, and then nearly managed the same thing against my X-Wing before a spectacular range 1 combo blew him out of the sky. I felt bad for the Defender, but that sort of thing happens.

Still more balanced than anything including a Phantom.
