I've been soured on Democracy Now since they had a fluoride crank on the show to do his book-tour thing and did nothing but gasp "Oh wow", when he told the captive audience that the fluoride we put in water is normally used as rat poison.

Which is complete horseshit, if you know what he is twisting to drum up pushback.

I've been bitching about her interview style for years, it's so awful. I'm always split, because on the one hand she talks about poo poo no one does and gets some great guests, but on the other hand she's so hamfisted and inelegant that it's painful to listen to her. She should just invite guests on and be like, "Say thing." Then sit there.

Yup. I stopped listening because if you know who the guest is you can predict exactly what they will say about the topic and she will never, ever ask a question to bump them out of their monologue. It's the same reason I had to stop reading Greenwald posts years ago.

It took me a year and a half to deprogram a Canadian I know who loves Greenwald. After all that time planting seeds, what finally turned him was reading Greenwald's latest book. "It's all about him," he said. "It's so self-absorbed."

Victory is mine.

What do you all think is the more likely scenario with Alex Jones: legitimately insane or putting on a show for money?

I mean, it's probably a bit of a mix, but which is the bigger aspect of his show/personality?

No, I tried to make up something that would be a semi-plausible pastiche of common issues discussed on the show.

Shouting for hours on-end is really, really difficult and he wallowed in obscurity for years before Obama was elected. The only time I'd see anything advertising him were home-made painted blankets strung up in the west campus neighborhoods abutting Mopac.

Probably a little like Glenn Greenwald: a broken record who's found a routine, and everything is practically in absolutist caps lock.

Used to listen to him for fun back in about 1994 when he had a show with Jeff Davis on one of the AM stations. It was all the same poo poo and he used to go around measuring city lawns and complaining about government regulations and such. He wasn't famous, but he was already crazy.

Also, at this time, Larry The Cable Guy was just making his bones as the morning drivetime humorous character that would call in to the morning show. He was legit funny and not yet political (though still very off-color).

The story was planted at the time Menendez was slated to become Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Chair if Kerry became Secretary of State.

Which ended up happening anyway because nobody believed Tucker, but it was a nice try!

i usually shy away from political books, i think the only ones i've read recently were Griftopia and Drift, but after reading an eisenhower and an FDR biography i finally decided to read Nixonland and now i wonder what i've been missing. after this it's gonna be Age of Reagan to tide me over until Invisible Bridge comes out. i'm almost giddy with anticipation

i think Clif White is my favorite character in Before the Storm. his carefully laid plans keep getting foiled by those bumbling arizonans

Before the Storm is such a great book it made me kinda feel bad for Barry loving Goldwater just because it showed that no matter how genuine his belief in his politics being the right way was, they constantly attracted the craziest, dumbest, most useless, pieces of poo poo to 'help' him. Like, don't get me wrong they were repugnant ideas that deserved to be reserved for those people, but you almost feel bad for him seeing his beliefs spawning a non stop parade of dregs.
