Ok, is the training of war animals defunct? I've got a Kennel constructed, several dwarves with Animal Trainer and Trapper enabled, several uncaged stray dogs running around, but when I open up the New Task option under the Kennel, all I have is Tame a Small Animal and Capture a Live Land Animal.

Animal training has been moved to an Activity Zone, and you designate what animals to train and who will train them from the Animals menu.

I just had the bug/feature where underground trees will suddenly grow and annihilate anything in it's path. A blood thorn grew in the small staging area I dug out right beneath ground level and now there's a giant hole in the ceiling. EDIT: Also it looks like woodworking is a lot better than I thought. One log will produce multiple crafts in one job. I haven't noticed if stonecrafts do the same, or if that was the case is .34 as well. Elth fucked around with this message at 07:20 on Jul 24, 2014 |

Went to my trainer who has animal training and trapping enabled, pressed P for preferences, but he says that there are no animals left to train... I dunno...

Crazy. I was wondering why holes were appearing above my farm area. It turns out that when trees or fungus grow they'll poke out the Z levels above where they grow. I must have set my dwarves to cut down fungal trees without realizing, making these holes appear. Now that I noticed it there are a bunch of fungal trees growing from my farm (and the level below) and sprouting on the surface.

Dungeon Ecology posted:Is it possible to train dogs who are already the pets of dwarves? Press 'I' to get your zone menu, lay out a zone of any size in any location, press 'T' to designate it for animal training. Ensure there is a dwarf with the Animal Training labour enabled. Press 'Z' to open your fortress status screen, go to the 'Animals' tab, and scroll through the list to find your dogs. Highlight a dog, and either press 'H' to train it as a hunting dog, or 'W' to train it as a war dog. The dogs don't need to be pastured in the training zone, your trainer will lead them there from wherever they are (even if they are pastured in a different zone). The zone also doesn't need to be walled off. As near as I can tell theres nothing wrong with just allocating any old tile you please.

Ok I'm stuck in a catch 22. No wood to make charcoal to make metal to make axe to make wood. Somehow I missed the second year's caravan (even though I got the dialogue about priorities) and missed out on trading 200+ precious fire opals No wood for beds and can't make anything metal. Caravan dude also told me about a goblin king who's conquered 40-something towns. How do I escape this poverty cycle before goblin dude invades?

Note that a wooden training axe will work just as well for cutting down trees, so you don't need the metalcrafting step.

tonberrytoby posted:e: I never tried it, but what happens when you tunnel under a tree and cause a cave in? Doesn't it turn into wood? If this works, there's your solution. Channel down through the tiles around a tree and its roots, have a relatively expendable miner with a quick escape route dig through the bottom of the "pillar" under the tree, and use one of the logs to make a wooden training axe. Your woodcutter can use the wooden axe to cut down trees.
