I'm rewatching "The Weight", which I've always thought was a really good episode, but I think I've found the most pointless thread in the entire show: the weird run-ins between Meadow and whatshisname, Peter Bogdanovich's character's daughter, then Tony and Peter Bogdanovich in the Columbia parking garage and then a coversation between him and his daughter about how she once kissed Melfi's son before she was gay. Anyone want to make a case for some thematic relevance there in an episode (among the longest of the series) otherwise entirely devoted to Ginny Sack's fat rear end?

I don't know, I kinda feel bad about Janice. It's something about getting old and being an aimless fuckup.

I think she's so hateable because its obvious that she's every bit as sociopathic and cruel as any of the gangsters, but for various reasons never had the chance at any real power in her life. Its very obvious that she would be a horrible boss(in any everyday job, not even the mob), and if she were a man and in the mafia she'd be the scourge of New Jersey.

Man, I really wanna rewatch this entire show again, but it seems wise to wait until the complete blu-ray set comes out but also ugh I wannaaaa. And I don't hate Janice. I mean, she had the same upbringing as Tony. Nobody gets out of that without some defects.

This is pretty well demonstrated in the episode where she goes to anger management when Bobby threatens to leave her and she actually does seem to make real progress with her new family until Tony provokes her into breaking it. I mean it's all well and good to call her an rear end in a top hat or whatever, but as soon as she stops being an rear end in a top hat Tony gets angry that she's doing better in her therapy than he is, and pulls a complete dick move of harping on harpo at the family dinner despite her probably being at her most stable point in the entire series. That scene is pretty damning of Tony, for how much it shows him as a petty vindictive psychopath, essentially displacing the anger at his mother for loving him up mentally and putting it on Janice when she finally starts to become a better person. I thought that was a pretty great portrayal of the kind of cycle of anger that can happen in a family that hosed up.

Tony's smug walk away after taunting Janice into trying to stab him before her family is pretty much his defining moment for me, that or the "He was gay, Gary Cooper?" conversation where Tony basically lays out how he views modern America as every man for himself. That was pretty much the moment i began to hate Tony. As he walks away from the Janice dinner incident, he has such a proud proud look on his face as if he just did the absolute most noble poo poo ever. Big spoiler chunk since we have some new viewers posting who havent seen the final seasons: as much as chris is my favorite character, i cant really fault tony for killing chris. I can live with it being a mercy kill almost. He was badly hurt, but furthermore he was driving them around nodding off on heroin which is extremely dangerous. Tony's hosed up reasoning aside, it did seem very likely Chris would end up dead from the drugs and possibly take out some innocents along the way. It was harder to feel sympathetic for Chris after he murdered the screenwriter buddy in complete cold blood over absolutely nothing oh and cosette. edit: fixing typos made while posting from phone thathonkey fucked around with this message at 23:39 on Jul 25, 2014 |

Not to mention the casual way he'd start smacking Adriana around for just about anything. The beating she got from him after she tried to get him help for his heroin addiction was horrifying. It's interesting that one of the few redeeming qualities about Tony was that he never laid his hands on Carmela besides grabbing her arm to keep her from walking away one time.

A similar thing to Tony's behaviour towards Janice happens with Chris. He gets berated by everyone for his drug problems (and for good reason), then once he gets clean they all make fun of him for not drinking and push him right back in.

Yea Chris is the kind of guy that will act like your best friend(and at the time its probably sincere) and then one night he's drunk and you tell him to gently caress off or something and he blows your brains out. A scary dude.

Basically he is just really unstable and i think a lot of that can be attributed to his drug abuse. Also that he's in the mob where being quick to fly off the handle over basically anything is part of the job description.

thathonkey posted:I think he was less involved than Hesh even. All we see is that he is the owner of a couple of pizza restaurants that Ritchie Aprile alluded to having given him money to start (iirc) so when he got out of jail he felt entitled to some of the earnings. Beansie felt otherwise. I got the impression that Beansie was a guy who found he made more money from the pizza place than from advancing in the mob and got out before getting made, and Hesh was deeply involved since the 50s and basically would have been a captain/consigliere if he had been Italian. Being Jewish he had to be excluded from the formal structure. There's reference to Hesh's "territory" and to his various operations dropped throughout the show, and to his son-in-law being part of his organization. He's basically the show's version of the last remnant of the Jewish mob that in reality was folded into the Italians in the 30s and then disappeared.
