Why isn't Syria allowed to participate when both Lebanon and Israel is allowed?

And Kazakhstan is apparently not allowed either.

They are not part of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), while Israel and Lebanon are. The EBU holds the song contest. Note that Lebanon is a founding member of the EBU.

I'm pretty sure there have been studies showing an inverse correlation between happiness and level of education.

My personal theory is that the happiest people are those who are both very wealthy and very dumb.

Well if you accept the claim that it can measure happiness, then it shows that a higher average income leads to a higher happiness in the 'worst' country at that income level.

I'm not particularly knowedgeable about statistics, but doesn't the line on your graph depict a correlation between increase in GDP per capita and the percentage of people who are very happy? There are obviously points far outside that line, especially the Latin American nations, but I'm not sure how pointing these out shows that your graph is one which does not refute the idea that there is no correlation between wealth and happiness. That there are outliers to me would only suggest that there are many other factors which impact on happiness, which seems so obvious as to be trivial. If I'm reading your graph wrong, can you explain it for me? Are you saying this graph does not show that there is a correlation--even a weak one--between GDP per capita and happiness? If so, what does the line on the graph represent?

Sure, there's obviously going to be variation, it would be insane to say wealth was the only thing that impacted happiness, but there's clearly a correlation there, especially suggesting a 'minimum' level of wealth before people start getting particularly satisfied.

I think he actually wanted to say that GDP per capita is not the only indicator that determines how happy a country can be. Of course there is a general correlation, but there are also many examples that prove that a country doesn't need to be rich in order to have happy citizens. Prime examples are Latin America and particularly Bhutan.

My guess is that Washington and New York aren't that much more extreme, but that the color scale identifies the highest and lowest states with special colors. No idea for what, though.
