I wish you luck in exploring your crawl space but I worry that the other end of this cable is cut. Edit: the cable looks like it's frayed. But it's tough to tell on my phone.

I didn't even think to check for an AT&T thread until today! I've been with AT&T for TV and Internet for one year, and my family switched to AT&T from Verizon about 2 months ago. Okay, question for the retention reps. I moved to the Houston area last summer and got the whole enchilada (U450 + HD + DVR + Max Plus internet) for a promotional pricing of ~$150 + a Nexus 7 tablet. Coming from Time Warner, this was a night and day difference. I've only suffered an outage once. All in all, a pretty awesome deal. My promotional pricing expires today, and in anticipation of this, I started shopping around at the beginning of July. I was kicking around going to Comcast because a friend switched to their internet and said it's crazy fast, but I've heard nothing but horror stories otherwise. I found a package for new AT&T customers that was $84 / month for U300 + Max Plus + free HBO for 12 months. With HD and DVR, it would have come to around $100, which sounds terrific to my wife since we don't really watch any other premium channel besides HBO. I was going to add that bundle to my "basket" online, but I didn't really know what would happen (DOUBLE CHARGED?!), so I got on the phone and spoke to a retention rep. The first rep I spoke to said said she could apply that to my account RIGHT THEN, but I somewhat foolishly sat on the offer, talked it over with my wife, and called back a few hours later to accept, only to speak to a different rep who was completely baffled by the first rep's offer. He said, "I have no idea why she even told you that; we can't make changes to an account like that within a promotional pricing period." He apologized, promised that he gained nothing by not offering me that original deal, and instead offered me a $100 discount, made a note of what offer I was calling about, and told me to call back on the 16th to hopefully get the deal I wanted. Well, it's the 16th, so I called back. I just got off the phone with a rep who could only manage $140 for U300 + HD + DVR + HBO (a la carte), but she "spoke to a supervisor" and came up with a deal that subtracts $60 from my bill every month for 12 months and leaves all of my services the same, putting me about $20 cheaper per month. This is not bad, either, but I was looking forward to a ~$100 cable and internet bill. I asked her what was stopping me from just cancelling my service and then reapplying as a new customer to get that new promotion, and she said, "Nothing, but you'd have to return your equipment and apply all over again with a credit check; you'll probably be without service for a week or more." I asked if she could just do that for me as an upstanding customer, but no dice. My wife would kill me, so I took her offer to keep my contract the same with a slight discount. tl;dr First world problems, I know, but did I give up too easily? Is it really impossible to just apply what I wanted? I mean, if they could just apply $ discounts, why not apply the appropriate $ amount as a discount?

If this did involve signing a new contract, you are in a tighter position. My recommendation would be to call them back and firmly tell them you would like the deal you originally were promised or you will be canceling. Keep firm with it. They may call your bluff however. Usually they do not. You might have to be ready to call comcast or something. But if you were promised a certain deal, go high enough in the chain until they make good on it. Thats just my 2 cents.

I had a mall kiosk guy claiming I could save money if I changed my cell plan to a more current offering, but the more I look at it, the worse deal it seems to be. Can someone check my math or something? Right now my bill looks like this: code:
Now I'm looking at the new "mobile share plans," and this is what I'm seeing as long as I keep using my current device: code:
I'm tempted by the Tmo $30 unlimited data/100minute prepaid plan. Dividing a $650 unlocked iPhone over 24 months, plus that $30 plan looks like a total of $57/mo+tax, but if I jump ship then regret it, or Tmo quits pricing so aggressively, I will have lost my current grandfathered ATT plan.

Yeah its a bit tougher for you because your discount goes off of the base plan ($40) and the data plan ($25), where as on the new plan it only goes off the $40. Its also cheaper because you are getting a reduced text plan that is no longer offered. So yeah, in your case your plan will be better than the new mobile share plans on ATT. Mall kiosk guy thinks its a good idea because that is how he gets paid and keeps his job. Personally, I would just keep what you have.

Do MMS count against the data cap? We're on a family share plan so we have unlimited SMS but a very low data cap; I'm unclear if MMS actually use data or if they just require it to be on and there's some fuckery on AT&T's end to make it not count against.

I have a HTC One M7 that's on Next, and the 12 months will be up in September. I'd like to give it back and get whatever the new iPhone will be, however, the sticker that was on the back of the phone with the IMEI and serial number and all that has come off of it in the past year. Also, there's a few scratches on the screen, nothing major but enough to be easily noticed. How screwed am I?

I'm currently grandfathered into the Unlimited Plan with AT&T and was wondering what the cap on the data is. I understand that its not technically "unlimited" so where is the cap? Or is it unlimited but if AT&T sees significant data usage they'll put a cap on it?

I don't remember 2G speeds so maybe that's what it was, but the one time I was throttled it was loving terrible. It was early on in AT&T's throttling so maybe they changed how they do it now. It was when they were throttling the "top 5%" or whatever they used, instead of a given threshold. If I wasn't on WiFi it was basically unusable.

I still have unlimited and I haven't gotten close to the cap but back in the day I heard rumors of reduced speed for months.
