I wonder if, when they tested the game, they realized that maybe something wasn't working out too well when you finish a level and the player character has 100 kills and the squad mates have 2.

I hated The Bureau: XCOM Declassified during the first real squad stage, because it seemed like I was babysitting a couple of useless jerks who wanted nothing more than to vault over cover and get themselves killed. I started enjoying it more when they got some decent abilities and actually contributed to battles. At that point the strategy becomes: move squad into cover, manage them when their good abilities are ready to pop.

That's one way to play the game, certainly. Maybe people who have that imbalance used their teams to funnel and CC. Nothing wrong with that. I probably had a 70-30 spread (if I had to guess) in terms of me/rest of team kills.

Thanks for the input guys. I guess I now have an idea of what they were trying to do with the gameplay design but ultimately I'm just not a fan and that's all there is to it. Oh well, another game I can clear off the backlog.

I heard that a couple of months ago, they made a patch which badly hosed scaling and progression or something. Is that as big a deal as the Defiance thread made it seem, and is it fixed? I quite liked it to jump into occasionally, but if it's as messed up as they said it was...

Yeah, they've fixed it. They effectively added level-based progression (Borderlands style) to the game without actually testing it for any length of time, so it was a complete clusterfuck for a while.

By the time the second TV season was airing, all of those kinks had been worked out. The game has more linear progression now. It scales the player up to a degree when entering areas out of your depth, but you're still at a notable disadvantage. You've got to level up and get higher tier guns to really compete.

Whether you consider it an improvement or a game-ruining change depends whether you were cool with the idea of being able to use some of the first guns in the game for the entire length of the campaign, without ever needing to loot.

It's a pretty solid MMO shooter now. There's a big (free) expansion due in three days too, I believe.

Even if they did (and they probably did, in fact) The Bureau was such a clusterfuck of development that there was no way something that boils down to "The player has to do most of the work" was something that was going to delay release by another month or more so they could either rebalance the game around that or improve the squad AI.

So it's not all the time, but they happen inside of buildings at certain times in the main story. It's like for each hour of investigation and collecting story trinkets you're doing, there's at least 5-7 minutes where you have to clear out demons from a region of the building (usually one floor). It's just kind of pointless, I wonder if they wanted this to be an Arkham-style game originally, because the overworld is about the size of Arkham Asylum and there's a Detective Mode button that highlights demons as orange and shows them through walls, and you take them down from behind.

It's just a game to play for the silly supernatural detective story, which is why I would have preferred if it was more like Gone Home. But w/e. People bitching about games like Gone Home is why games like Soul Suspect get hosed up. We'd better put enemies in it so it's a Real Game!!

I installed the Director's Cut for Dead Island and followed the rest of Dominic Whites advice, but I still can't get into the game. I'm sure I'm playing it wrong or something? It's just a major drag to hit anything with the paddle I got for my first weapon; the combat is janky and clumsy as hell. Everything just feels like a chore. Is it supposed to be like this or am I doing something wrong? If anyone had fun with this game, please tell me what was fun and how long I have to wait for it, because the uninstall button is very tempting atm.

If you haven't played it I'd recommend Dead Rising 2/ Dead Rising 2: Off the Record if you want some silly zombie killing. It has some bullshit like bosses with wonky hitboxes but its still pretty accessible and overall a fun game. DR2 Off the Record even has a sandbox mode if the whole time limit aspect of the series puts you off. (The time mechanic isn't really bad though, I usually hate it in games, but DR2 gives you enough time.)
