Jari from Wintersun posted more about his album woes, and general issues with making music. I feel a little bad for him, he's apparently living in a crappy flat, is broke and can't find a way to record music. Then again maybe if he uses 19 orchestras instead of 20 he might have a shot.quote:I´ve been thinking about this Kickstarter/Pledge crowd funding thing for a while and I´m very confident now that there is enough of you guys that would help us raise the money for the Wintersun studio! This would give me the freedom to make music efficiently and nonstop. It would eliminate lot of the problems I´ve struggled with all my life and still continue to struggle everyday. For example right now I need a studio to reamp guitars for TIME II. And not just any studio, my own studio where I can craft my sounds exactly like I want them. 3rd party studios have never worked for me and I´ve never gotten satisfactory results for the insane prices they charge.

Are there not any studios around that he can use? That sounds more reasonable than a professional studio just for Wintersun.

Trey Spruance manages to get work done under similar circumstances using pretty much a laptop and a few mic pres, not sure what that dude's problem is.

Some people have very specific workflows they need in order to feel like they're recording something that is 'their' sound and not utter poo poo, Jari is definitely one of these people. I can sympathize with the guy, hell, I would donate to a Wintersun Kickstarter.

To be honest he comes off pretty whiny. I'm not exactly eager to defend record companies but they gave him advances and paid for promo and distribution for the albums that got him all the fans that would donate to this hypothetical kickstarter. For him to then whine about the fact that he can't just up and decide to cut them out of the process and the profits is kind of dumb. Also, what's stopping him from starting a "Buy Jari a studio because he's a swell guy" kickstarter without mentioning Wintersun at all?

I'd imagine he signed his contract years before something like Kickstarter existed, and the label's just shaking him down for more money. If anything he should start a get Jari a lawyer fund so he can raise money for his poo poo free and clear.

I have no doubt that the label is kinda lovely and unsympathetic but I probably would be too given how goddamn long it takes him to produce an album and his seemingly endless string of excuses. There's so many people out there recording music that sounds good on modest budgets, I just don't think he knows what the gently caress he's doing.

The guy really needs to step back and realize this isn't high art he's making. It won't be on display in the Louvre in two hundred years. Get a cheap rehearsal space, record some demos and learn to properly mic up your cabinet then rent a studio you idiot fucker. Also get a job.

'Wintersun' was an over-bloated, tedious mess of an album and I can't actually remember if I listened to 'Time' or not which says a lot. Guess we'll see 'Time II' released around 2017 I imagine, can't wait to not listen to that.

anti-magic posted:Jari is the Aaron Diaz of metal. I've heard people argue that "bloated mess" (paraphrasing) is the point of Wintersun but idk, every time I hear a song by them I like the song less. If you don't remember Time it's because it had a pointless 4-minute instrumental intro followed by a 13 minute long track out of which about 2-3 minutes were any good. After that a 9 minute long meandering power ballad, another (thankfully shorter) instrumental track and it all capped off with the song Time, an 11-minute mess with a few good bits. Jari CAN write good stuff and he's a good musician and all that stuff but when it takes a decade to make an album that's 1:4 good:filler? He should probably just play lead guitar and do backing vocals in a completely different band at this point.
